Microgravity vibration isolation: An optimal control law for the one-dimensional case
Certain experiments contemplated for space platforms must be isolated from the accelerations of the platforms. An optimal active control is developed for microgravity vibration isolation, using constant state feedback gains (identical to those obtained from the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) approach) along with constant feedforward (preview) gains. The quadratic cost function for this control algorithm effectively weights external accelerations of the platform disturbances by a factor proportional to (1/omega)(exp 4). Low frequency accelerations (less than 50 Hz) are attenuated by greater than two orders of magnitude. The control relies on the absolute position and velocity feedback of the experiment and the absolute position and velocity feedforward of the platform, and generally derives the stability robustness characteristics guaranteed by the LQR approach to optimality. The method as derived is extendable to the case in which only the relative positions and velocities and the absolute accelerations of the experiment and space platform are available
Microgravity isolation system design: A modern control synthesis framework
Manned orbiters will require active vibration isolation for acceleration-sensitive microgravity science experiments. Since umbilicals are highly desirable or even indispensable for many experiments, and since their presence greatly affects the complexity of the isolation problem, they should be considered in control synthesis. In this paper a general framework is presented for applying extended H2 synthesis methods to the three-dimensional microgravity isolation problem. The methodology integrates control and state frequency weighting and input and output disturbance accommodation techniques into the basic H2 synthesis approach. The various system models needed for design and analysis are also presented. The paper concludes with a discussion of a general design philosophy for the microgravity vibration isolation problem
Microgravity isolation system design: A case study
Many acceleration-sensitive, microgravity science experiments will require active vibration isolation from manned orbiters on which they will be mounted. The isolation problem, especially in the case of a tethered payload, is a complex three-dimensional one that is best suited to modern-control design methods. In this paper, extended H(sub 2) synthesis is used to design an active isolator (i.e., controller) for a realistic single-input-multiple-output (SIMO) microgravity vibration isolation problem. Complex mu-analysis methods are used to analyze the isolation system with respect to sensor, actuator, and umbilical uncertainties. The paper fully discusses the design process employed and the insights gained. This design case study provides a practical approach for isolation problems of greater complexity. Issues addressed include a physically intuitive state-space description of the system, disturbance and noise filters, filters for frequency weighting, and uncertainty models. The controlled system satisfies all the performance specifications and is robust with respect to model uncertainties
An empirical test for cellular automaton models of traffic flow
Based on a detailed microscopic test scenario motivated by recent empirical
studies of single-vehicle data, several cellular automaton models for traffic
flow are compared. We find three levels of agreement with the empirical data:
1) models that do not reproduce even qualitatively the most important empirical
observations,
2) models that are on a macroscopic level in reasonable agreement with the
empirics, and 3) models that reproduce the empirical data on a microscopic
level as well.
Our results are not only relevant for applications, but also shed new light

Human behavior as origin of traffic phases
It is shown that the desire for smooth and comfortable driving is directly
responsible for the occurrence of complex spatio-temporal structures
(``synchronized traffic'') in highway traffic. This desire goes beyond the
avoidance of accidents which so far has been the main focus of microscopic
modeling and which is mainly responsible for the other two phases observed
empirically, free flow and wide moving jams. These features have been
incorporated into a microscopic model based on stochastic cellular automata and
the results of computer simulations are compared with empirical data. The
simple structure of the model allows for very fast implementations of realistic
networks. The level of agreement with the empirical findings opens new

Towards a realistic microscopic description of highway traffic
Simple cellular automata models are able to reproduce the basic properties of
highway traffic. The comparison with empirical data for microscopic quantities
requires a more detailed description of the elementary dynamics. Based on
existing cellular automata models we propose an improved discrete model
incorporating anticipation effects, reduced acceleration capabilities and an
enhanced interaction horizon for braking. The modified model is able to
reproduce the three phases (free-flow, synchronized, and stop-and-go) observed
in real traffic. Furthermore we find a good agreement with detailed empirical
single-vehicle data in all phases.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Excitation and relaxation in atom-cluster collisions
Electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in atom-cluster collisions are
treated simultaneously and self-consistently by combining time-dependent
density functional theory with classical molecular dynamics. The gradual change
of the excitation mechanisms (electronic and vibrational) as well as the
related relaxation phenomena (phase transitions and fragmentation) are studied
in a common framework as a function of the impact energy (eV...MeV). Cluster
"transparency" characterized by practically undisturbed atom-cluster
penetration is predicted to be an important reaction mechanism within a

High Performance Magnetic Bearings for Aero Applications
Several previous annual reports were written and numerous papers published on the topics for this grant. That work is not repeated here in this final report. Only the work completed in the final year of the grant is presented in this final report. This final year effort concentrated on power loss measurements in magnetic bearing rotors. The effect of rotor power losses in magnetic bearings are very important for many applications. In some cases, these losses must be minimized to maximize the length of time the rotating machine can operate on a fixed energy or power supply. Examples include aircraft gas turbine engines, space devices, or energy storage flywheels. In other applications, the heating caused by the magnetic bearing must be removed. Excessive heating can be a significant problem in machines as diverse as large compressors, electric motors, textile spindles, and artificial heart pumps
Cellular automata approach to three-phase traffic theory
The cellular automata (CA) approach to traffic modeling is extended to allow
for spatially homogeneous steady state solutions that cover a two dimensional
region in the flow-density plane. Hence these models fulfill a basic postulate
of a three-phase traffic theory proposed by Kerner. This is achieved by a
synchronization distance, within which a vehicle always tries to adjust its
speed to the one of the vehicle in front. In the CA models presented, the
modelling of the free and safe speeds, the slow-to-start rules as well as some
contributions to noise are based on the ideas of the Nagel-Schreckenberg type
modelling. It is shown that the proposed CA models can be very transparent and
still reproduce the two main types of congested patterns (the general pattern
and the synchronized flow pattern) as well as their dependence on the flows
near an on-ramp, in qualitative agreement with the recently developed continuum
version of the three-phase traffic theory [B. S. Kerner and S. L. Klenov. 2002.
J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 35, L31]. These features are qualitatively different
than in previously considered CA traffic models. The probability of the
breakdown phenomenon (i.e., of the phase transition from free flow to
synchronized flow) as function of the flow rate to the on-ramp and of the flow
rate on the road upstream of the on-ramp is investigated. The capacity drops at
the on-ramp which occur due to the formation of different congested patterns

A stochastic cellular automaton model for traffic flow with multiple metastable states
A new stochastic cellular automaton (CA) model of traffic flow, which
includes slow-to-start effects and a driver's perspective, is proposed by
extending the Burgers CA and the Nagel-Schreckenberg CA model. The flow-density
relation of this model shows multiple metastable branches near the transition
density from free to congested traffic, which form a wide scattering area in
the fundamental diagram. The stability of these branches and their velocity
