Roughening and preroughening in the six vertex model with an extended range of interaction
We study the phase diagram of the BCSOS model with an extended interaction
range using transfer matrix techniques, pertaining to the (100) surface of
single component fcc and bcc crystals. The model shows a 2x2 reconstructed
phase and a disordered flat phase. The deconstruction transition between these
phases merges with a Kosterlitz-Thouless line, showing an interplay of Ising
and Gaussian degrees of freedom. As in studies of the fully frustrated XY
model, exponents deviating from Ising are found. We conjecture that
tri-critical Ising behavior may be a possible explanation for the non-Ising

Is surface melting a surface phase transition?
Monte Carlo or Molecular Dynamics calculations of surfaces of Lennard-Jones
systems often indicate, apart from a gradual disordering of the surface called
surface melting, the presence of a phase transition at the surface, but cannot
determine the nature of the transition. In the present paper, we provide for a
link between the continuous Lennard-Jones system and a lattice model. We apply
the method for the (001) surface of a Lennard-Jones fcc structure pertaining to
Argon. The corresponding lattice model is a Body Centered Solid on Solid model
with an extended range of interaction, showing in principle rough, flat and
disordered flat phases. We observe that entropy effects considerably lower the
strength of the effective couplings between the atoms. The Argon (001) face is
shown to exhibit a phase transition at T=70.5 +- 0.5 K, and we identify this
transition as roughening. The roughening temperature is in good correspondence

Dynamical transitions in incommensurate systems
In the dynamics of the undamped Frenkel-Kontorova model with kinetic terms,
we find a transition between two regimes, a floating incommensurate and a
pinned incommensurate phase. This behavior is compared to the static version of
the model. A remarkable difference is that, while in the static case the two
regimes are separated by a single transition (the Aubry transition), in the
dynamical case the transition is characterized by a critical region, in which
different phenomena take place at different times. In this paper, the
generalized angular momentum we have previously introduced, and the dynamical
modulation function are used to begin a characterization of this critical
region. We further elucidate the relation between these two quantities, and

Atomic quasi-Bragg diffraction in a magnetic field
We report on a new technique to split an atomic beam coherently with an
easily adjustable splitting angle. In our experiment metastable helium atoms in
the |{1s2s}^3S_1 M=1> state diffract from a polarization gradient light field
formed by counterpropagating \sigma^+ and \sigma^- polarized laser beams in the
presence of a homogeneous magnetic field. In the near-adiabatic regime, energy
conservation allows the resonant exchange between magnetic energy and kinetic
energy. As a consequence, symmetric diffraction of |M=0> or |M=-1> atoms in a
single order is achieved, where the order can be chosen freely by tuning the
magnetic field. We present experimental results up to 6th order diffraction (24
\hbar k momentum splitting, i.e., 2.21 m/s in transverse velocity) and present
a simple theoretical model that stresses the similarity with conventional Bragg
scattering. The resulting device constitutes a flexible, adjustable,
large-angle, three-way coherent atomic beam splitter with many potential

Resisting bare life : civil solidarity and the hunt for illegalized migrants
While European governments have pursued illegalized migrants for decades, the techniques through which they do so have taken a more radical turn since 2015. Focusing on the particular case of Belgium, this paper documents how its Federal government has increasingly tried to “police” migrants into the European refugee regime, while migrants and citizens have continued to resist these efforts through a series of “political” actions. Drawing on ethnographic work with the Brussels‐based Citizen Platform for the Support of Refugees, I pursue two aims: first, I demonstrate how the Belgian state has consciously produced a humanitarian crisis as part of a broader “politics of exhaustion”; and second, I explore the specific forms and types of humanitarian action that emerge from citizens’ response to these policies. I do so by describing three moments in which these opposing logics of policing and politicization conjure
Density matrix renormalization group for the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition of the 19-vertex model
We embody the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method for the
19-vertex model on a square lattice in order to investigate the
Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Elements of the transfer matrix of
the 19-vertex model are classified in terms of the total value of arrows in one
layer of the square lattice. By using this classification, we succeed to reduce
enormously the dimension of the matrix which has to be diagonalized in the DMRG
method. We apply our method to the 19-vertex model with the interaction
and obtain for the conformal anomaly. PACS. 05.90.+m,

Elevation, moisture and shade drive the functional and phylogenetic meadow communities’ assembly in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau
Despite a long history of alpine meadows studies, uncertainty remains about the importance of environmental factors in structuring their assembly. We examined the functional and phylogenetic structure of 170 alpine Tibetan meadow communities in relation to elevation, soil moisture and shade. Functional community structure was estimated with both communityweighted mean (CWM) trait values for specific leaf area (SLA), plant height and seed mass and functional diversity (Rao’s quadratic index) for their traits individually and in combination (multivariate functional diversity). We found that shade induced by woody plants significantly increased the phylogenetic diversity and functional diversity of SLA of co-occurring species, suggesting that woody plants behave as “ecosystem engineers” creating a different environment that allows the existence of shade tolerant species and thereby facilitates the coexistence of plant species with different light resource acquisition strategies. We also found evidence for a clear decrease in phylogenetic diversity, CWM and functional diversity related to plant height in the two extreme, both the dry and wet, soil moisture conditions. This indicates that both drought and excess moisture may act as environmental filters selecting species with close phylogenetic relationships and similar height. Moreover, we detected significant decreases in both CWM and functional diversity for seed mass along elevational gradients, suggesting that low net primary productivity (NPP) limits seed size. Finally, because of different individual trait responses to environmental factors, the multivariate functional diversity did not change across environmental gradients. This lack of multivariate response supports the hypothesis that multiple processes, such as environmental filtering, competition and facilitation, may operate simultaneously and exert opposing effects on community assembly along different niche (e.g., water use, light acquisition) axes, resulting in no overall functional community structure change. This contrast between individual and multivariate trait patterns highlights the importance of examining individual traits linked with different ecological processes to better understand the mechanisms of community assembly

Bekkenbanden zijn ontwikkeld voor de acute behandeling van instabiele bekkenringfracturen in de prehospitale fase. Deze behandeling is gericht op het beperken van het inwendig bloedverlies door het verkleinen van het bij bekkenfracturen toegenomen bekkenvolume en het stabiliseren van de fractuurdelen. Het effect van commercieel verkrijgbare bekkenbanden op de reductie van de symphysis pubisdiastase en de hemodynamische stabiliteit is aangetoond. Het langdurig gebruik van bekkenbanden wordt ontraden wegens toegenomen risico op het ontwikkelen van decubitus. Met name langdurige immobilisatie met een bekkenband op een traumaplank dient voorkomen te worden. In dit artikel wordt een aantal verschillende bekkenbanden besproken en wordt een casus gepresenteerd.Pelvic circumferential compression devices have been developed for initial treatment of unstable pelvic ring fractures in the prehospital situation. The treatment is aimed at achieving tamponade by reducing the increased pelvic volume and reducing the bleeding from fracture surfaces. The effect of commercially available pelvic circumferential compression devices on the reduction of symphysis pubis diastasis and the resuscitation has been proved. Prolonged use of these devices is complicated by the risk of development of pressure sores. Therefore prolonged immobilization on a spine board should be avoided. Two phase transitions in the fully frustrated model
The fully frustrated model on a square lattice is studied by means of
Monte Carlo simulations. A Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is found at , followed by an ordinary Ising transition at a slightly
higher temperature, . The non-Ising exponents reported by
others, are explained as a failure of finite size scaling due to the screening
