    Differences between Old and Young Adults’ Ability to Recognize Human Faces Underlie Processing of Horizontal Information

    Recent psychophysical research supports the notion that horizontal information of a face is primarily important for facial identity processes. Even though this has been demonstrated to be valid for young adults, the concept of horizontal information as primary informative source has not yet been applied to older adults’ ability to correctly identify faces. In the current paper, the role different filtering methods might play in an identity processing task is examined for young and old adults, both taken from student populations. Contrary to most findings in the field of developmental face perception, only a near-significant age effect is apparent in upright and un-manipulated presentation of stimuli, whereas a bigger difference between age groups can be observed for a condition which removes all but horizontal information of a face. It is concluded that a critical feature of human face perception, the preferential processing of horizontal information, is less efficient past the age of 60 and is involved in recognition processes that undergo age-related decline usually found in the literature

    Stadt- und StraßenbĂ€ume im Klimawandel

    Klimaanpassung und MitigationStĂ€dte profitieren von ihren BĂ€umen auf unterschiedliche Weise. Neben vielen weiteren wichtigen Aufgaben regulieren sie z. B. das Mikroklima, spenden Schatten und werten das Stadtbild auf. Stadt- und insbesondere StraßenbĂ€ume sind jedoch z. T. extremen Bedingungen ausgesetzt, die kaum mit denen in WĂ€ldern oder in der offenen Landschaft vergleichbar sind. In der Stadt sind sie hĂ€ufig Trockenstress, Luftverschmutzung, Streusalz, verdichteten Böden und vielen anderen Stressfaktoren ausgesetzt, weshalb sie zumeist kaum die HĂ€lfte ihrer potenziellen Altersspanne ausschöpfen können. Durch die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels (z. B. zunehmende Hitze- und Trockenperioden, Zunahme von Extremereignissen) verschlechtern sich diese ohnehin ungĂŒnstigen Standortbedingungen zusĂ€tzlich. Einige bewĂ€hrte Baumarten lassen heute bereits deutliche Probleme aufgrund der verĂ€nderten VerhĂ€ltnisse erkennen. Damit StadtbĂ€ume auch zukĂŒnftig Klimakomfort, Lufthygiene und Ästhetik gewĂ€hrleisten können, sollte sich die Arten-(Sorten-)wahl bzw. die Standortwahl an den kommenden stadtklimatischen VerhĂ€ltnissen orientieren. Das ThĂŒringer Institut fĂŒr Nachhaltigkeit und Klimaschutz (ThINK GmbH) erstellt daher in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Institut fĂŒr Forstbotanik und Forstzoologie der Technischen UniversitĂ€t Dresden und dem Freien Garten- und Landschaftsarchitekten Ulrich Boock ein Stadtbaumkonzept fĂŒr die Stadt Jena, das die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels als einen zentralen Faktor mit einbezieht. Dabei werden die Standortbedingungen fĂŒr Stadt- und StraßenbĂ€ume unter BerĂŒcksichtigung relevanter Standortfaktoren, wie z. B. Versiegelung, Verkehrsimmissionen, Streusalzeintrag, Boden, Kaltluft sowie klimatische Parameter, wie Temperatur, Klimatische Wasserbilanz und Windgeschwindigkeit fĂŒr die Klimanormalperiode 2071 – 2100 analysiert und mittels Clusteranalyse zukĂŒnftige Standorttypen fĂŒr StadtbĂ€ume abgeleitet. Auf dieser Grundlage werden Baumartenempfehlungen fĂŒr unterschiedliche rĂ€umliche Ebenen (Stadtteile, Quartiere, einzelne StraßenrĂ€ume, Parks, Promenaden), unter Einbezug gestalterischer und planerischer Aspekte, erarbeitet, die mit den zukĂŒnftigen stadtklimatischen Bedingungen am jeweiligen Standort gut zurechtkommen sollten. Im Ergebnis erhĂ€lt die Stadtverwaltung Jena ein Konzept, das es ihr erlaubt, das StadtgrĂŒn dem Stadtklima der Zukunft anzupassen, somit Kosten fĂŒr BewĂ€sserung, Pflege und Ersatzpflanzungen einzusparen und aufgrund des erhöhten CO2 -Bindungsvermögens vitaler, langlebiger StadtbĂ€ume einen Beitrag zum Klimaschutz zu leisten

    Studying microtemporal, within-person processes of diet, physical activity, and related factors using the appetite-mobile-app: Feasibility, usability, and validation study

    Background: Diet and physical activity (PA) have a major impact on physical and mental health. However, there is a lack of effective strategies for sustaining these health-protective behaviors. A shift to a microtemporal, within-person approach is needed to capture dynamic processes underlying eating behavior and PA, as they change rapidly across minutes or hours and differ among individuals. However, a tool that captures these microtemporal, within-person processes in daily life is currently not present. Objective: The APPetite-mobile-app is developed for the ecological momentary assessment of microtemporal, within-person processes of complex dietary intake, objectively recorded PA, and related factors. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and usability of the APPetite-mobile-app and the validity of the incorporated APPetite-food record. Methods: The APPetite-mobile-app captures dietary intake event-contingently through a food record, captures PA continuously through accelerometers, and captures related factors (eg, stress) signal-contingently through 8 prompts per day. Empirical data on feasibility (n=157), usability (n=84), and validity (n=44) were collected within the Eat2beNICE-APPetite-study. Feasibility and usability were examined in healthy participants and psychiatric patients. The relative validity of the APPetite-food record was assessed with a subgroup of healthy participants by using a counterbalanced crossover design. The reference method was a 24-hour recall. In addition, the energy intake was compared with the total energy expenditure estimated from accelerometry. Results: Good feasibility, with compliance rates above 80% for prompts and the accelerometer, as well as reasonable average response and recording durations (prompt: 2.04 min; food record per day: 17.66 min) and latencies (prompts: 3.16 min; food record: 58.35 min) were found. Usability was rated as moderate, with a score of 61.9 of 100 on the System Usability Scale. The evaluation of validity identified large differences in energy and macronutrient intake between the two methods at the group and individual levels. The APPetite-food record captured higher dietary intakes, indicating a lower level of underreporting, compared with the 24-hour recall. Energy intake was assessed fairly accurately by the APPetite-food record at the group level on 2 of 3 days when compared with total energy expenditure. The comparison with mean total energy expenditure (2417.8 kcal, SD 410) showed that the 24-hour recall (1909.2 kcal, SD 478.8) underestimated habitual energy intake to a larger degree than the APPetite-food record (2146.4 kcal, SD 574.5). Conclusions: The APPetite-mobile-app is a promising tool for capturing microtemporal, within-person processes of diet, PA, and related factors in real time or near real time and is, to the best of our knowledge, the first of its kind. First evidence supports the good feasibility and moderate usability of the APPetite-mobile-app and the validity of the APPetite-food record. Future findings in this context will build the foundation for the development of personalized lifestyle modification interventions, such as just-in-time adaptive interventions

    IntroductionThis study aims to examine the long-term management of peritonsillar abscess and compare needle aspiration, incision with drainage, and tonsillectomy in terms of comorbidities, complication rates, and recurrences in the largest study cohort published to date.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective analysis of patients, both adults and children, who were treated for peritonsillar abscess between 2007 and 2019. Patient charts were analyzed to assess surgical treatment, infection and inflammation rates, risk of bleeding, recurrence rates, duration of illness, and sick certificates. Additionally, patient imaging and blood levels were compared. Postal questionnaires were sent to all patients to evaluate subjective success rates, complications, and long-term benefits of the different treatment regimens. General practitioners and ENT doctors in private practices were contacted to gather missing data on the long-term course of the disease.ResultsA total of 821 patients with peritonsillar abscess were included in this study. Two patients had to be excluded due to incidental pathological findings. Of the remaining 819 patients, 180 were successfully treated with needle aspiration or incision. Among these patients, 37.7% required tonsillectomy during the same inpatient stay. Laboratory parameters such as leukocyte count or C-reactive protein levels were not indicative of the need for tonsillectomy. Furthermore, computed tomography was only necessary in cases of suspected parapharyngeal abscess, not in clear cases of peritonsillar abscess. Among the 641 patients who underwent tonsillectomy, 11.4% experienced postoperative bleeding requiring treatment. Only patients who underwent bilateral tonsillectomy reported recurrent episodes of sore throat and pharyngitis resulting in absence from work. The ipsilateral recurrence rate for peritonsillar abscess after needle aspiration or incision was 2.8%. There were no contralateral recurrences during the observation period.ConclusionDue to the lower risk of postoperative bleeding, shorter absence from work, and shorter inpatient stay, incision and drainage are the preferable treatment for peritonsillar abscess. Additionally, patients who underwent bilateral tonsillectomy reported higher rates of work incapacity due to sore throat caused by pharyngitis. No patient met the clear indication for bilateral tonsillectomy due to recurrent acute tonsillitis. The recurrence rate after drainage without tonsillectomy was very low (2.8% ipsilaterally, no recurrence contralaterally)

    Expression of Kallikrein-related peptidase 6 in primary mucosal malignant melanoma of the head and neck

    Mucosal melanomas of the head and neck (MMHN) are aggressive tumors with poor prognosis, different opposed to cutaneous melanoma. In this study, we characterized primary mucosal malignant melanoma for the expression of Kallikrein-related peptidase 6 (KLK6), a member of the KLK family with relevance to the malignant phenotype in various cancer types including cutaneous melanoma. Paraffin-embedded MMHN of 22 patients were stained immunohistochemically for KLK6 and results were correlated with clinical and pathological data. In 77.3% (17/22) of MMHN cases, positive KLK6 staining was found. Staining pattern for tumor cells showed a predominant cytoplasmic staining. However, in six cases we also observed a prominent nuclear staining. MMHN with a high KLK6 expression showed significantly better outcome concerning local recurrence-free survival (p = 0.013) and nuclear KLK6 staining was significantly associated with the survival status (p = 0.027). Overexpression of KLK6 was detected in more than 70% of MMHN and approximately 40% of tumors showed a strong expression pattern. Correlation between clinical outcome of MMHN patients and overexpression of KLK6 has not been addressed so far. Our data demonstrate for the first time increased levels of KLK6 in MMHN and strengthen the hypothesis that there might be a context-specific regulation and function of KLK6 in mucosal melanoma

    Inhibition of radiation induced migration of human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cells by blocking of EGF receptor pathways

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recently it has been shown that radiation induces migration of glioma cells and facilitates a further spread of tumor cells locally and systemically. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether radiotherapy induces migration in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). A further aim was to investigate the effects of blocking the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and its downstream pathways (Raf/MEK/ERK, PI3K/Akt) on tumor cell migration in vitro.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Migration of tumor cells was assessed via a wound healing assay and proliferation by a MTT colorimeritric assay using 3 HNSCC cell lines (BHY, CAL-27, HN). The cells were treated with increasing doses of irradiation (2 Gy, 5 Gy, 8 Gy) in the presence or absence of EGF, EGFR-antagonist (AG1478) or inhibitors of the downstream pathways PI3K (LY294002), mTOR (rapamycin) and MEK1 (PD98059). Biochemical activation of EGFR and the downstream markers Akt and ERK were examined by Western blot analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In absence of stimulation or inhibition, increasing doses of irradiation induced a dose-dependent enhancement of migrating cells (p < 0.05 for the 3 HNSCC cell lines) and a decrease of cell proliferation (p < 0.05 for the 3 HNSCC cell lines). The inhibition of EGFR or the downstream pathways reduced cell migration significantly (almost all p < 0.05 for the 3 HNSCC cell lines). Stimulation of HNSCC cells with EGF caused a significant increase in migration (p < 0.05 for the 3 HNSCC cell lines). After irradiation alone a pronounced activation of EGFR was observed by Western blot analysis.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results demonstrate that the EGFR is involved in radiation induced migration of HNSCC cells. Therefore EGFR or the downstream pathways might be a target for the treatment of HNSCC to improve the efficacy of radiotherapy.</p

    Despite worldwide prevention programs, the incidence for cutaneous melanoma is continuously increasing. Mucosal melanoma (MM) represents a rare but highly aggressive phenotype of common melanoma with predilection in the sinonasal system. Far away from ultraviolet sun exposure, the molecular mechanisms underlying tumorigenesis and the highly aggressive clinical behavior are poorly understood. In many solid malignomas of the head and neck region, p53 tumor suppressor functions as oncogene due to p53 protein stabilizing mutation. Interestingly, the vast majority of MM demonstrates constitutively expressed p53 protein, with protein stabilizing mutations being rare. Abrogated activation of p53 target genes results in derogation of the apoptotic signal cascade and contributes to the strong resistance against chemotherapeutic agents activating p53 dependent apoptosis.
