    Dead Wood Necromass in a Moist Tropical Forest : Stocks, Fluxes, and Spatiotemporal Variability

    Woody debris (WD) stocks and fluxes are important components of forest carbon budgets and yet remain understudied, particularly in tropical forests. Here we present the most comprehensive assessment of WD stocks and fluxes yet conducted in a tropical forest, including one of the first tropical estimates of suspended WD. We rely on data collected over 8 years in an old-growth moist tropical forest in Panama to quantify spatiotemporal variability and estimate minimum sample sizes for different components. Downed WD constituted the majority of total WD mass (78%), standing WD contributed a substantial minority (21%), and suspended WD was the smallest component (1%). However, when considering sections of downed WD that are elevated above the soil, the majority of WD inputs and approximately 50% of WD stocks were disconnected from the forest floor. Branchfall and liana wood accounted for 17 and 2% of downed WD, respectively. Residence times averaged 1.9 years for standing coarse WD (CWD; > 20 cm diameter) and 3.6 years for downed CWD. WD stocks and inputs were highly spatially variable, such that the sampling efforts necessary to estimate true values within 10% with 95% confidence were > 130 km of transects for downed CWD and > 550 ha area for standing CWD. The vast majority of studies involve much lower sampling efforts, suggesting that considerably more data are required to precisely quantify tropical forest WD pools and fluxes. The demonstrated importance of elevated WD in our study indicates a need to understand how elevation above the ground alters decomposition rates and incorporate this understanding into models of forest carbon cycling.Peer reviewe

    Piloting and producing a map of Millennium Cohort Study Data usage: Where are data underutilised and where is granularity lost?

    The UK Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) is a longitudinal interdisciplinary study following the lives of 19,000 children born in the UK in 2000/1. Information has been collected at 9 months, 3, 5, 7 and 11 years, with the next sweep of data collection underway among study members who are aged 14 years. A wide range of data have been collected from children, parents and guardians, the partners of parents/guardians, older siblings and teachers, as well as sub-studies that collected data from health visitors; these include self-reported and objectively measured/verified data. This study sets out to examine how MCS data are utilised. To fit within the remit of the study, we hone in on ten priority question areas (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, Child Social Behaviour Questionnaire, Diet, BMI, Immunisations, School Dis/like, Self-reported Friendships, Self-reported feelings, Screen Time, Hobbies). In total we found 481 unique studies that were using MCS data and undertaking primary analysis up to July 2015. Data that are collected through a recognised scale with defined thresholds or cut-off points for identifying constructs of interest and/or data that can provide a unique insight into a policy-relevant issue, are those most widely used in the MCS data. Measures that have been collected across sweeps – diet, BMI, SDQ and screen time - are all comparatively well used. Those measures that have started to be collected at age 7 (and first made available in 2010) have had lower usage. Data that were collected from the child’s own reports (e.g. friendships and feelings) have seldom been utilised in comparison to data collected through parental reports (e.g. SDQ). Collection of data from multiple informants did not always correlate with higher levels of usage. Imposing thresholds on data was found to be problematic in some cases, for example for BMI, where a number of different thresholds for overweight and obesity were in use. The use of different thresholds can lead to substantial differences in the results obtained. This is the first review using systematic methods that has explored MCS data use. We set out a number of ideas for good practice around the use of and reporting of MCS data

    The aim of this project, commissioned by the Department of Health in England, was to undertake a systematic review of the survey literature that has estimated the prevalence of mental health disorders among adults from minority ethnic groups in England. Findings about the estimated prevalence of different mental health disorders, and about the extent and nature of the available survey evidence, are to be used to inform the design of a sampling strategy aimed at boosting the sample of people from minority ethnic groups in the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (APMS) due in 2021

    Strength in diversity: enhancing learning in vocationally-orientated, master's level courses

    Postgraduate education in geography, especially at the Master’s level, is undergoing significant changes in the developed world. There is an expansion of vocationally-oriented degree programmes, increasing recruitment of international students, integration of work place skills, and the engagement of non-traditional postgraduate students as departments respond to policies for a more ‘inclusive’ higher education. This paper sets the context by outlining some programmatic changes in selected countries (Australia, the UK, and the USA). We briefly reflect on how postgraduate ‘bars’ or ‘levels’ are defined and explore in detail what ‘diversity’ or ‘heterogeneity’ means in these new postgraduate settings. The paper then explores some examples of practice drawn from our own experiences, whilst recognising that relevance will vary in other contexts. Finally we consider how diversity can be harnessed as a strength that has potential to enhance taught elements of contemporary postgraduate education in and beyond the discipline

    Playing with the future: social irrealism and the politics of aesthetics

    In this paper we wish to explore the political possibilities of video games. Numerous scholars now take seriously the place of popular culture in the remaking of our geographies, but video games still lag behind. For us, this tendency reflects a general response to them as imaginary spaces that are separate from everyday life and 'real' politics. It is this disconnect between abstraction and lived experience that we complicate by defining play as an event of what Brian Massumi calls lived abstraction. We wish to short-circuit the barriers that prevent the aesthetic resonating with the political and argue that through their enactment, video games can animate fantastical futures that require the player to make, and reflect upon, profound ethical decisions that can be antagonistic to prevailing political imaginations. We refer to this as social irrealism to demonstrate that reality can be understood through the impossible and the imagined
