Non-homogeneous polygonal Markov fields in the plane: graphical representations and geometry of higher order correlations
We consider polygonal Markov fields originally introduced by Arak and
Surgailis (1989). Our attention is focused on fields with nodes of order two,
which can be regarded as continuum ensembles of non-intersecting contours in
the plane, sharing a number of features with the two-dimensional Ising model.
We introduce non-homogeneous version of polygonal fields in anisotropic
enviroment. For these fields we provide a class of new graphical constructions
and random dynamics. These include a generalised dynamic representation,
generalised and defective disagreement loop dynamics as well as a generalised
contour birth and death dynamics. Next, we use these constructions as tools to
obtain new exact results on the geometry of higher order correlations of
polygonal Markov fields in their consistent regime.Comment: 54 page
Trzecia kultura. O współczesnych związkach sztuki, nauk i technologii
The third culture. On contemporary relations among art, science and technology Contemporary cultures undergo the process of deep and diverse hybridization. Among numerous elements and factors of this process, relations between art and science play no- wadays very important role. I analyse this concept in the framework of the theory of the third culture, C.P. Snow put forward in his Rede lecture and publication in 1959. The third culture concept has been subsequently discussed and reinterpreted by John Brockman. In my analyse I return to Snow’s idea of dialog as a basic form of the agency of merging arts and sciences. To explain how such processes have developed in the fields of contemporary artistic practices I present two case studies: the analyse of interactive Augmented Reality installations of Monika Fleischmann and Wolfgang Strauss in the context of ICT science; and the analyse of nanoart works of Victoria Vesna
Contests Hosting Service as a tool to teach programming
Computer science would not exist without the concept of algorithm. Therefore design of algorithms plays an important role in education while implementation is usually considered to be straightforward. Increasing variety of programming languages, wealth of possible constructions, programming environments and tools makes programming difficult for the beginners.Apart from the idea of problem solution, it is important to teach programming skills. Size of classes of 10-20 pupils and a limited number of lessons and their short time are the major problem. The teacher has to check solution of every pupil, compile it and run tests. This is definitely a time-consuming process which makes teaching difficult. In this paper the authors present the use of problem solutions validation systems during classes. With the help of such a system called Zawody WEB, the authors teach algorithms and programming for the secondary school students

MODELOWANIE – UMIEJĘTNOŚĆ CZY SZTUKA?
The work is an attempt to define the essence of modelling process, which plays such an important and key role in the development of science and technology. The author points to the fundamental characteristics of a good model and conditions for assessing its correctness resulting from the model usefulness to solve specific engineering tasks. To make considerations and conclusions more convincing, the author repeatedly refers to various genres of art: painting, graphics, architecture, music and applied arts, to clearly expose the keynote telling that modelling in engineering is a creative process, characterized by the same features as the creative process associated with the creation of works of art. Examples illustrating the principles of modelling as well as the similarities and parallels between the works of engineering of various nature and works of art were taken from various web sources: Wikipedia, materials from the collections of the author and library of the Academy of Music in Katowice, from his own scientific work from different periods of his activity, from the results of research available by other scientists, among others, prof. Andrzej Demenko, as well as from the monograph of J. Turowski “Electromagnetic calculations of machine parts and electrical appliances”. Some of them have been prepared specially for this the article by Marcin Szczygieł, Marek Kluszczyński and Wojciech Pytel. Wojciecha Pytla
Art in Search of Identity. An Introduction to Considerations on Relationships between Arts, Science, and Technology SUMMARYThe text discusses relations between art and science with technology, which, the author believes, are one of the major consequences of problematization of the boundaries of art. This process, begun already in the nineteenth century, gained momentum owing to the development of avant-garde trends, having ultimately upset the identity of art. The institutional conception of art became a method of work in the Post-Identity art. Another response to this situation was the development of interaction between art and science, based on technological foundations, and the consequent emergence of the hybrid, transdisciplinary vision of art. The author presents and analyzes his proposed typology of artistic trends focused on cognitive activity, emerging from the dialogue with science. He focuses in particular on the third of the foregoing trends: art@science, which he regards as the most signifi cant for the recent manifestations of the analyzed phenomenon. At the same time he emphasized the specifi city and dissimilarity of contemporary relationships between art and science as compared with its earlier, historical manifestations
Rotary-linear induction motor based on the standard 3-phase squirrel cage induction motor – constructional and technological features
Induction motors with some degrees of freedom (more than one) belong to unconventional drives which offer wider possibilities of motion than traditional drives. These motors constitute a small group of electric drives, however, new requirements for mechatronic devices are the cause of growing interest in their steady and regular development. As far as rotary-linear motors are concerned, they can be used in devices dedicated to mixing and drilling ensuring both rotary and linear movements. Because of the complex construction of such motors, their manufacturing process is expensive. In order to reduce these costs, the authors develop and propose the concept of the 3-phase rotary-linear machine built-up on the basis of a standard 3-phase squirrel-cage motor. This approach results in the significant reduction of manufacturing costs through the use of prefabricated parts (e.g. complete stator, stack of stator sheets, motor housing), as well as allowing the partial adoption of technologies used for standard induction motors
Randomized algorithms for statistical image analysis and site percolation on square lattices
We propose a novel probabilistic method for detection of objects in noisy
images. The method uses results from percolation and random graph theories. We
present an algorithm that allows to detect objects of unknown shapes in the
presence of random noise. The algorithm has linear complexity and exponential
accuracy and is appropriate for real-time systems. We prove results on
consistency and algorithmic complexity of our procedure.Comment: Submitted for publication on December 11, 200
