Centennial Seedless
Urgent surgery for emergency situations in endocrine diseases is needed for mechanical problems (e.g., chiasma syndrome or tracheal obstruction) and very rarely for endocrine hyperfunction, which can usually be treated by nonsurgical means. Exceptions are patients suffering from thyroid storm (impending early relapse after plasmapheresis due to excess iodine) or from acute Cushing's syndrome (intractable potassium loss and alkalosis whom we have successfully transferred to surgery. The rules for diagnosis and medical preparation for surgery of endocrine hyperfunctional states should only be disregarded ultima ratio
Reconstitution of 3′ end processing of mammalian pre-mRNA reveals a central role of RBBP6
The 3′ ends of almost all eukaryotic mRNAs are generated in an essential two-step processing reaction: endonucleolytic cleavage of an extended precursor followed by the addition of a poly(A) tail. By reconstituting the reaction from overproduced and purified proteins, we provide a minimal list of 14 polypeptides that are essential and two that are stimulatory for RNA processing. In a reaction depending on the polyadenylation signal AAUAAA, the reconstituted system cleaves pre-mRNA at a single preferred site corresponding to the one used in vivo. Among the proteins, cleavage factor I stimulates cleavage but is not essential, consistent with its prominent role in alternative polyadenylation. RBBP6 is required, with structural data showing it to contact and presumably activate the endonuclease CPSF73 through its DWNN domain. The C-terminal domain of RNA polymerase II is dispensable. ATP, but not its hydrolysis, supports RNA cleavage by binding to the hClp1 subunit of cleavage factor II with submicromolar affinity
Generating reversible circuits from higher-order functional programs
Boolean reversible circuits are boolean circuits made of reversible
elementary gates. Despite their constrained form, they can simulate any boolean
function. The synthesis and validation of a reversible circuit simulating a
given function is a difficult problem. In 1973, Bennett proposed to generate
reversible circuits from traces of execution of Turing machines. In this paper,
we propose a novel presentation of this approach, adapted to higher-order
programs. Starting with a PCF-like language, we use a monadic representation of
the trace of execution to turn a regular boolean program into a
circuit-generating code. We show that a circuit traced out of a program
computes the same boolean function as the original program. This technique has
been successfully applied to generate large oracles with the quantum
programming language Quipper.Comment: 21 pages. A shorter preprint has been accepted for publication in the

Search for the Hypothetical pi -> mu x Decay
The KARMEN collaboration has reported the possible observation of a hitherto
unknown neutral and weakly interacting particle x, which is produced in the
decay pi -> mu + x with a mass m(x) = 33.9 MeV. We have searched for this
hypothetical decay branch by studying muons from pion decay in flight with the
LEPS spectrometer at the piE3 channel at PSI and find branching ratios BR(pi-
to mu- anti-x) < 4e-7 and BR(pi+ to mu+ x) < 7e-8 (95\% C.L.). Together with
the limit BR > 2e-8 derived in a recent theoretical paper our result would
leave only a narrow region for the existence of x if it is a heavy neutrino.Comment: 10 pages, TeX (uses epsf), 3 Postscript figures uu-encode
Study of the process e+e- -> omega pi0 in the phi-meson mass region with the KLOE detector
We have studied the e+e- -> omegapi0 cross section in the sqrt(s) interval
1000-1030 MeV using the pi+pi-pi0pi0 and pi0pi0gamma final states with a sample
of ~600 pb^-1 collected with the KLOE detector at DAFNE. By fitting the
observed interference pattern around M_phi for both final states, we extract
the ratio of the decay widths Gamma(omega->pi0gamma)/Gamma(omega->pi+pi-pi0) =
0.0897 +- 0.0016 and derive the branching fractions BR(omega -> pi+pi-pi0)=
(90.24 +- 0.19)%, BR(omega -> pi0gamma) = (8.09 +- 0.14)%. The parameters
describing the e+e- -> omegapi0 reaction around M_\phi are also used to extract
the branching fraction for the OZI and G-parity violating phi -> omegapi0
decay: BR(phi->omegapi0) = (4.4 +- 0.6)x10^-5.Comment: 12 Pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physics Letter
