Contact resistance dependence of crossed Andreev reflection
We show experimentally that in nanometer scaled superconductor/normal metal
hybrid devices and in a small window of contact resistances, crossed Andreev
reflection (CAR) can dominate the nonlocal transport for all energies below the
superconducting gap. Besides CAR, elastic cotunneling (EC) and nonlocal charge
imbalance (CI) can be identified as competing subgap transport mechanisms in
temperature dependent four-terminal nonlocal measurements. We demonstrate a
systematic change of the nonlocal resistance vs. bias characteristics with
increasing contact resistances, which can be varied in the fabrication process.
For samples with higher contact resistances, CAR is weakened relative to EC in
the midgap regime, possibly due to dynamical Coulomb blockade. Gaining control
of CAR is an important step towards the realization of a solid state entangler.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR
Congruence and Divergence of Teacher-school Board Member Attitudes in Selected Kentucky School Districts 1973 and 1982
The problem of this study was to determine if significant differences existed between teachers and school board members in two school districts in Kentucky in their perceptions of 35 selected educational issues and procedures. The population studied included all teachers and board members in the two selected school districts. A study of the county school district in Kentucky was conducted in 1973 and in 1982. Study of the city school district in Kentucky was only conducted in 1982. Chi-square statistics were used to analyze the data. Fifteen null hypotheses were tested in this study. Attitudes of 1973 county teachers and board members were compared with those of 1982 county teachers and board members. Attitudes of 1982 city teachers and board members were compared with those of 1982 county teachers and board members. Attitudes of 1982 teachers were compared based upon the sex of the teachers, the age of the teachers, the formal training of the teachers, and the number of years teachers had taught in the school district. It was concluded that teachers and board members in both school districts studied perceived more items congruently than divergently when a broad range of issues and policy development procedures are considered; that county teachers and county board members in 1982 perceived issues and procedures more congruently than did city teachers and city board members; that county teachers and board members in 1982 perceived issues and procedures more congruently than their 1973 predecessors; the trend toward more congruent attitudes between teachers and board members appears to be more the result of change in the attitudes of the teachers than in the attitudes of the board members; and that board members in the selected school districts are more congruent in their attitudes than teachers in these same school districts. Analysis of the relationship of predictors with the NTE-WCET scores revealed that sex and teaching level did not correlate significantly. ACT composite scores, CAT Reading scores, CAT Math scores, CAT English scores, teacher education admission grade-point averages, and Professional Education sequence grade-point averages correlated significantly at the .0001 level. ACT composite scores and CAT Reading scores shared the greatest common variance with NTE-WCET scores at 74.23 percent and 61.88 percent respectively. Analysis of a significant correlation between the NTE-WCET scores and a combination of all eight predictors showed a significant correlation at the .0001 level. Analysis of the significance of each predictor to the R(\u272) increase showed that ACT composite scores, CAT Reading scores, and CAT English scores were significant at the .05 level
Vector chiral order in frustrated spin chains
By means of a numerical analysis using a non-Abelian symmetry realization of
the density matrix renormalization group, we study the behavior of vector
chirality correlations in isotropic frustrated chains of spin S=1 and S=1/2,
subject to a strong external magnetic field. It is shown that the field induces
a phase with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry, in line with earlier
theoretical predictions. We present results on the field dependence of the
order parameter and the critical exponents.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
Geometric criticality between plaquette phases in integer-spin kagome XXZ antiferromagnets
The phase diagram of the uniaxially anisotropic antiferromagnet on the
kagom\'e lattice includes a critical line exactly described by the classical
three-color model. This line is distinct from the standard geometric classical
criticality that appears in the classical limit () of the 2D XY
model; the geometric T=0 critical line separates two unconventional
plaquette-ordered phases that survive to nonzero temperature. The
experimentally important correlations at finite temperature and the nature of
the transitions into these ordered phases are obtained using the mapping to the
three-color model and a combination of perturbation theory and a variational
ansatz for the ordered phases. The ordered phases show sixfold symmetry
breaking and are similar to phases proposed for the honeycomb lattice dimer
model and model. The same mapping and phase transition can be
realized also for integer spins but then require strong on-site
anisotropy in the Hamiltonian.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Systematic errors in Gaussian Quantum Monte Carlo and a systematic study of the symmetry projection method
Gaussian Quantum Monte Carlo (GQMC) is a stochastic phase space method for
fermions with positive weights. In the example of the Hubbard model close to
half filling it fails to reproduce all the symmetries of the ground state
leading to systematic errors at low temperatures. In a previous work [Phys.
Rev. B {\bf 72}, 224518 (2005)] we proposed to restore the broken symmetries by
projecting the density matrix obtained from the simulation onto the ground
state symmetry sector. For ground state properties, the accuracy of this method
depends on a {\it large overlap} between the GQMC and exact density matrices.
Thus, the method is not rigorously exact. We present the limits of the approach
by a systematic study of the method for 2 and 3 leg Hubbard ladders for
different fillings and on-site repulsion strengths. We show several indications
that the systematic errors stem from non-vanishing boundary terms in the
partial integration step in the derivation of the Fokker-Planck equation.
Checking for spiking trajectories and slow decaying probability distributions
provides an important test of the reliability of the results. Possible
solutions to avoid boundary terms are discussed. Furthermore we compare results
obtained from two different sampling methods: Reconfiguration of walkers and
the Metropolis algorithm.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, revised version, new titl

Spectra of comet P/Halley at R = 4 - 8 AU
Spectra of Comet Halley (lambda lambda = 3400-6500 A) were acquired at pre- and post-perihelion distances of 4.8 AU on 1985 Feb. 17 (Coma V equals 18.9 mag) and 1987 Feb. 1 (coma V = 15.9 mag) using the 4.5-m Multiple-Mirror Telescope (MMT) and the CTIO 4.0-m telescope, respectively. The CN(0,0) violet system band flux at 4.8 AU was approx. 15 times greater at the post-perhelion phase compared to pre-perihelion. Additional post-perihelion spectra, obtained on 1986 Nov. 28 to 30 with the MTT, showed CN(0,0) and very weak C3 4040 A emission. The MMT data are one-dimensional spectra (aperture: 5 arc sec diameter) obtained with an intensified Reticon while the CTIO data are two-dimensional spectra (slit length = 280 arc sec) obtained with a 2D-Frutti photon counting system. Extended CN(0,0) emission was detected in the 1987 Feb. 1 (at 4.8 AU) spectra to a distance of at least 70 arc sec in the solar and anti-solar directions. Additional CCD spectra obtained with the KPNO 2.2-meter telescope on 1988 Feb. 20 (at 7.9 AU) show scattered solar continuum approx. 32 arc sec diameter. However, no emission features were detected at 7.9 AU
The polymerisation of oligo(ethylene glycol methyl ether) methacrylate from a multifunctional poly(ethylene imine) derived amide: a stabiliser for the synthesis and dispersion of magnetite nanoparticles
A facile synthetic route to poly(ethylene imine)-graft-poly(oligo(ethylene glycol methyl ether)) (PEI-graft-POEGMA) functionalised superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles is described. The polymerisation of OEGMA from a model molecular amide demonstrated the feasibility of POEGMA synthesis under mild ATRP conditions (20 °C in ethanol) albeit with low initiator efficiencies. DFT studies suggest that the amide functionality is intrinsically of lower activity than ester functional monomers and initiators for atom transfer polymerisation (ATRP) as a consequence of higher bond dissociation energies and bond dissociation free energies (BDFE). However these studies further highlighted that use of an appropriate solvent could reduce the free energy of dissociation thereby reducing the relative difference in BDFE between the ester and amide groups. A commercial branched PEI sample was functionalised by reaction with 2-bromo-2-methylpropanoyl bromide giving an amide macroinitiator suitable for the atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) of oligo(ethylene glycol methyl ether) methacrylate. The resulting PEI-graft-POEGMA copolymers were characterised by SEC, FT-IR and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. PEI-graft-POEGMA coated magnetite nanoparticles were synthesised by a basic aqueous co-precipitation method and were characterised by transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and vibrating sample magnetometry and dynamic light scattering. These copolymer coated magnetite nanoparticles were demonstrated to be effectively stabilised in an aqueous medium. Overall the particle sizes and magnetic and physical properties of the coated samples were similar to those of uncoated samples
