    A Two-dimensional Superconductor in a Tilted Magnetic Field - new states with finite Cooper-pair momentum

    Varying the angle Theta between applied field and the conducting planes of a layered superconductor in a small interval close to the plane-parallel field direction, a large number of superconducting states with unusual properties may be produced. For these states, the pair breaking effect of the magnetic field affects both the orbital and the spin degree of freedom. This leads to pair wave functions with finite momentum, which are labeled by Landau quantum numbers 0<n<\infty. The stable order parameter structure and magnetic field distribution for these states is found by minimizing the quasiclassical free energy near H_{c2} including nonlinear terms. One finds states with coexisting line-like and point-like order parameter zeros and states with coexisting vortices and antivortices. The magnetic response may be diamagnetic or paramagnetic depending on the position within the unit cell. The structure of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states at Theta=0 is reconsidered. The transition n->\infty of the paramagnetic vortex states to the FFLO-limit is analyzed and the physical reason for the occupation of higher Landau levels is pointed out.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figure

    Exact General Relativistic Perfect Fluid Disks with Halos

    Using the well-known ``displace, cut and reflect'' method used to generate disks from given solutions of Einstein field equations, we construct static disks made of perfect fluid based on vacuum Schwarzschild's solution in isotropic coordinates. The same method is applied to different exactsolutions to the Einstein'sequations that represent static spheres of perfect fluids. We construct several models of disks with axially symmetric perfect fluid halos. All disks have some common features: surface energy density and pressures decrease monotonically and rapidly with radius. As the ``cut'' parameter aa decreases, the disks become more relativistic, with surface energy density and pressure more concentrated near the center. Also regions of unstable circular orbits are more likely to appear for high relativistic disks. Parameters can be chosen so that the sound velocity in the fluid and the tangential velocity of test particles in circular motion are less then the velocity of light.     Spin Exciton in quantum dot with spin orbit coupling in high magnetic field

    Coulomb interactions of few (N N ) electrons confined in a disk shaped quantum dot, with a large magnetic field B=B∗B=B^* applied in the z-direction (orthogonal to the dot), produce a fully spin polarized ground state. We numerically study the splitting of the levels corresponding to the multiplet of total spin S=N/2S=N/2 (each labeled by a different total angular momentum Jz J_z ) in presence of an electric field parallel to B B , coupled to S S by a Rashba term. We find that the first excited state is a spin exciton with a reversed spin at the origin. This is reminiscent of the Quantum Hall Ferromagnet at filling one which has the skyrmion-like state as its first excited state. The spin exciton level can be tuned with the electric field and infrared radiation can provide energy and angular momentum to excite it.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. submitted to Phys.Rev.

    Het Meetnet Landschap heeft negen meetdoelen, waarmee op nationaal niveau veranderingen in het landschap en de landschapskwaliteit systematisch worden gevolgd. Om overlap te voorkomen is het meetdoel ruimtegebruik beperkt tot landbouw, recreatie, delfstofwinning, en afval- en slibberging. De voorgestelde monitoringmethode bestaat onder andere uit periodiek registreren van veranderingen in het ruimtegebruik op basis van digitale kaartbestanden, en beoordelen van de duurzaamheid van het ruimtegebruik. Voor dit laatste wordt gekeken of het veranderde ruimtegebruik in overeenstemming is met de bruikbaarheid en draagkracht van het landschap. Hierbij worden eenmalig opgestelde vertaalsleutels en kwalitatieve landschapsbestanden gebruikt

    The authors identify and discuss the many complexities involved in the translation of scientific information in the social sciences into forms usable for solving problems of practice in education. As a means of appropriately handling these complexities and the issues that arise, they prescribe a series of stages to be followed from the advent of a practitioner's situational problem to the design of a response to it.
