General Relativistic Contributions in Transformation Optics

One potentially realistic specification for devices designed with transformation optics is that they operate with high precision in curved space-time, such as Earth orbit. This raises the question of what, if any, role does space-time curvature play in determining transformation media? Transformation optics has been based on a three-vector representation of Maxwell's equations in flat Minkowski space-time. I discuss a completely covariant, manifestly four-dimensional approach that enables transformations in arbitrary space-times, and demonstrate this approach for stable circular orbits in the spherically symmetric Schwarzschild geometry. Finally, I estimate the magnitude of curvature induced contributions to satellite-borne transformation media in Earth orbit and comment on the level of precision required for metamaterial fabrication before such contributions become important.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures. The magnetization of PrFeAsO0.60_{0.60}F$_{0.12} sueprconductor

The magnetization of the PrFeAsO$_{0.60}$F$_{0.12}$ polycrystalline sample has been measured as functions of temperature and magnetic field $(H)$. The observed total magnetization is the sum of a superconducting irreversible magnetization ($M_s$) and a paramagnetic magnetization ($M_p$). Analysis of dc susceptibility $\chi(T)$ in the normal state shows that the paramagnetic component of magnetization comes from the Pr$^{+3}$ magnetic moments. The intragrain critical current density $(J_L)$ derived from the magnetization measurement is large. The $J_L(H)$ curve displays a second peak which shifts towards the high-field region with decreasing temperature. In the low-field region, a plateau up to a field $H^*$ followed by a power law $H^{-5/8}$ behavior of $J_L(H)$ is the characteristic of the strong pinning. A vortex phase diagram for the present superconductor has been obtained from the magnetization and resistivity data.Comment: A revised version with modified title,8 pages, 7 figure

Following World War II, the federal G.I. Bill enabled approximately 2.3 million, predominantly white male Veterans to receive a post-secondary education. To accommodate increased enrollment, in 1946 the University of Maine established the Brunswick Campus at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station. The remote campus operated until spring 1949, when Veteran registrations waned. The Casimir Force in Randall Sundrum Models with q+1 dimensions

We evaluate the Casimir force between two parallel plates in Randall Sundrum (RS) scenarios extended by q compact dimensions. After giving exact expressions for one extra compact dimension (RS 6D model), we generalize to an arbitrary number of compact dimensions. We present the complete calculation for both two brane scenario (RSI model) and one brane scenario (RSII models) using the method of summing over the modes. We investigate the effects of extra dimensions on the magnitude and sign of the force, and comment on limits for the size and number of the extra dimensions.Comment: 19 pages, single-spaced, 3 figure
