    Probing anomalous couplings using di-Higgs production in electron-proton collisions

    A proposed high energy Future Circular Hadron-Electron Collider would provide sufficient energy in a clean environment to probe di-Higgs production. Using this channel we show that the azimuthal angle correlation between the missing transverse energy and the forward jet is a very good probe for the non-standard hhhhhh and hhWWhhWW couplings. We give the exclusion limits on these couplings as a function of integrated luminosity at a 9595\% C.L. using the fiducial cross sections. With appropriate error fitting methodology we find that the Higgs boson self coupling could be measured to be ghhh(1)=1.00βˆ’0.17(0.12)+0.24(0.14)g^{(1)}_{hhh} = 1.00^{+0.24(0.14)}_{-0.17(0.12)} of its expected Standard Model value at s=3.5(5.0)\sqrt s = 3.5(5.0) TeV for an ultimate 10 abβˆ’1^{-1} of integrated luminosity

    Background: Enteropathogenic (EPEC) and Enteroaggregative (EAEC) E. coli have similar, but distinct clinical symptoms and modes of pathogenesis. Nevertheless when they infect the gastrointestinal tract, it is thought that their flagellin causes IL-8 release leading to neutrophil recruitment and gastroenteritis. However, this may not be the whole story as the effect of bacterial adherence to IEC innate response(s) remains unclear. Therefore, we have characterized which bacterial motifs contribute to the innate epithelial response to EPEC and EAEC, using a range of EPEC and EAEC isogenic mutant strains. Methodology: Caco-2 and HEp-2 cell lines were exposed to prototypical EPEC strain E2348/69 or EAEC strain O42, in addition to a range of isogenic mutant strains. E69 [LPS, non-motile, non-adherent, type three secretion system (TTSS) negative, signalling negative] or O42 [non-motile, non-adherent]. IL-8 and CCL20 protein secretion was measured. Bacterial surface structures were assessed by negative staining Transmission Electron Microscopy. The Fluorescent-actin staining test was carried out to determine bacterial adherence. Results: Previous studies have reported a balance between the host pro-inflammatory response and microbial suppression of this response. In our system an overall balance towards the host pro-inflammatory response is seen with the E69 WT and to a greater extent O42 WT, which is in fit with clinical symptoms. On removal of the external EPEC structures flagella, LPS, BFP, EspA and EspC; and EAEC flagella and AAF, the host inflammatory response is reduced. However, removal of E69 lymphostatin increases the host inflammatory response suggesting involvement in the bacterial mediated anti-inflammatory response. Conclusion: Epithelial responses were due to combinations of bacterial agonists, with host-bacterial contact a key determinant of these innate responses. Host epithelial recognition was offset by the microbe's ability to down-regulate the inflammatory response. Understanding the complexity of this host-microbial balance will contribute to improved vaccine design for infectious gastroenteritis

    Facility Layout of Irregular-shaped Departments using a Nested Approach

    The facility layout problem is a very difficult and widely studied optimization problem. As a result, many facility layout models and techniques have been developed. However, the literature does not fully consider or control irregular-shaped departments. In this paper, the nested facility layout problem is defined whereby irregular-shaped departments(i.e. L-shaped, O-shaped or U-shaped) can be generated and controlled. This is a unique problem that can be used to efficiently layout workstations, storage areas and other departments within departments, while arranging the departments with respect to an objective. The objective considered here is to minimize material handling cost. We present a formulation and solution technique for the nested facility layout problem. The formulation consists of a modification of Montreuil’s mixed-integer problem (MIP) to consider nesting departments. Finally, for illustrative purposes, several example problems are solved using the solution technique presented. The nested facility layout model can be used to either produce a more realistic and detailed block layout, or to group departments together (or nest departments within departments), thus enabling larger facility layout problems to be solved

    This paper presents a mathematical model and simulated annealing heuristics for assigning activities to workspaces and resources (e.g., equipment, parts, and toolboxes) to work/storage spaces during planned outages at electric power plants. These assignments are made such that the distance resources (toolboxes) travel throughout the duration of the outage is minimized. This problem is de2ned as the dynamic space allocation problem. To test the performance of the proposed techniques, a data set is generated and used in the analysis. The results show that the simulated annealing heuristics perform well with respect to solution quality and computational time

    An ion-exchange hollow fiber is prepared by introducing into the wall of the fiber polymerizable liquid monomers, and polymerizing the monomers therein to form solid, insoluble, cross-linked, ion-exchange resin particles which embed in the wall of the fiber. Excess particles blocking the central passage or bore of the fiber are removed by forcing liquid through the fiber. The fibers have high ion-exchange capacity, a practical wall permeability and good mechanical strength even with very thin wall dimensions. Experimental investigation of bundles of ion-exchange hollow fibers attached to a header assembly have shown the fiber to be very efficient in removing counterions from solution
