Positivity of Chern Classes for Reflexive Sheaves on P^N
It is well known that the Chern classes of a rank vector bundle on
\PP^N, generated by global sections, are non-negative if and vanish
otherwise. This paper deals with the following question: does the above result
hold for the wider class of reflexive sheaves? We show that the Chern numbers
with can be arbitrarily negative for reflexive sheaves of any
rank; on the contrary for we show positivity of the with weaker
hypothesis. We obtain lower bounds for , and for every
reflexive sheaf \FF which is generated by H^0\FF on some non-empty open
subset and completely classify sheaves for which either of them reach the
minimum allowed, or some value close to it.Comment: 16 pages, no figure
Genetic epidemiology of eating disorders
We capture recent findings in the field of genetic epidemiology of eating disorders. As analytic techniques evolve for twin, population, and molecular genetics, new findings emerge at an accelerated pace. We present the current status of knowledge regarding the role of genetic and environmental factors that influence risk for eating disorders

Perturbation of Tunneling Processes by Mechanical Degrees of Freedom in Mesoscopic Junctions
We investigate the perturbation in the tunneling current caused by
non-adiabatic mechanical motion in a mesoscopic tunnel junction. A theory
introduced by Caroli et al. \cite{bi1,bi2,bi3} is used to evaluate second order
self-energy corrections for this non-equilibrium situation lacking
translational invariance. Inelastic signatures of the mechanical degrees of
freedom are found in the current-voltage characteristics. These give
rise to sharp features in the derivative spectrum, .Comment: 22 pages LaTeX + 3 uuencoded PS picture
Can attention to the intestinal microbiota improve understanding and treatment of anorexia nervosa?
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by severe dietary restriction or other weight loss behaviors and exhibits the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. Therapeutic renourishment in AN is founded primarily on clinical opinion and guidelines, with a weak evidence base. Genetic factors do not fully account for the etiology of AN, and non-genetic factors that contribute to the onset and persistence of this disease warrant investigation. Compelling evidence that the intestinal microbiota regulates adiposity and metabolism, and more recently, anxiety behavior, provides a strong rationale for exploring the role of this complex microbial community in the onset, maintenance of, and recovery from AN. This review explores the relationship between the intestinal microbiota and AN and a potential role for this enteric microbial community as a therapy for this severe illness
High-energy Auger line shapes of Pd and Rh: experiment and theory
FAPESP - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULOCNPQ - CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICOFINEP - FINANCIADORA DE ESTUDOS E PROJETOSWe compare nonrelativistic atomic multiplet calculations of the L1,2,3M4,5M4,5 spectra of Rh and Pd in the jj intermediate-coupling scheme with high-resolution experimental spectra excited with a Ti anode, indicating general, good agreement even for these open valence shell metals: the simplicity of the calculations indicates their suitability for experimental analyses. Comparison with relativistic calculations, including configuration interaction, for Rh indicates that the nonrelativistic spectra appear to agree better with the experimental data than do the relativistic ones. The influence of relativistic and correlation effects on the intensities does not seem to be important. The major influence on the forms of the spectra is that of the relative positions of the multiplet components. Satellites of all three spectra would seem to be produced by shake-up, rather than Coster-Kronig processes. The positions and forms of these satellites are consistent with a model in which spectator vacancies in the 4d band exist in both the initial and final states of the Auger transitionWe compare nonrelativistic atomic multiplet calculations of the L1,2,3M4,5M4,5 spectra of Rh and Pd in the ii intermediate-coupling scheme with high-resolution experimental spectra excited with a Ti anode, indicating general, good agreement even for these open valence shell metals: the simplicity of the calculations indicates their suitability for experimental analyses. Empathy, compassion, and theory of mind in obsessive‐compulsive disorder
Objectives: Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often suffer from impairments in social functioning. This study investigates differences in empathy, compassion, and Theory of Mind (ToM) in individuals with OCD as a possible cause for social functioning deficits. Design: Sixty-four individuals diagnosed with OCD and 62 healthy individuals completed a naturalistic behavioural task (EmpaToM) and a self-report measure (Interpersonal Reactivity Index, IRI). Methods: Three preregistered repeated measures analyses of variance (ANOVAs). Results: People with OCD exhibited higher empathy levels - namely increased sharing of others' suffering - in the EmpaToM task and reported more distress (IRI) compared with healthy individuals. Furthermore, no differences in compassion (EmpaToM) between both groups emerged, although people with OCD reported more concern for others (IRI) compared with healthy individuals. Concerning the ToM, no group differences were detected, neither in the behavioural task, nor self-report. Conclusion: By investigating OCD with diverse scientific practices we shed light on the higher levels of empathy exhibited by individuals with OCD, which are relevant for clinical practice and our understanding of OCD symptomatology. Practitioner points: People with obsessive-compulsive disorder show higher levels of empathy, that is the increased sharing of others' suffering, compared with healthy individuals in both a traditional self-report and a naturalistic task. Regarding compassion, that is caring for others, their self-reported compassion was higher in people with OCD. In Theory of Mind, that is cognitively understanding the situation of another person, no differences have been found neither at self-report nor in a naturalistic task compared with healthy individuals. Independent of traditional interventions, it could prove useful to improve emotion regulation skills so people with OCD learn to cope with empathic distress. Furthermore, it might strengthen the treatment gains and lower dropout rates if the social mind and consequently social relationships become a topic in the treatment and prevention of OCD
False-negative Histoplasma antigen in acute pulmonary histoplasmosis: the value of urinary concentration by ultrafiltration and heat denaturation of serum proteins in detection of Histoplasma antigen
We report an infant with localized pulmonary histoplasmosis in whom Histoplasma antibody assays, quantitative Histoplasma urine and serum antigen concentrations, and histopathologic findings of a mediastinal mass were nondiagnostic. A provisional diagnosis of histoplasmosis was established by using laboratory methods that increase the sensitivity of the antigen assay using ultrafiltration of urine and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid/heat denaturation of serum proteins
