    Anomalously old biotite <sup>40</sup>Ar/<sup>39</sup>Ar ages in the NW Himalaya

    Biotite 40Ar/39Ar ages older than corresponding muscovite 40Ar/39Ar ages, contrary to the diffusion properties of these minerals, are common in the Himalaya and other metamorphic regions. In these cases, biotite 40Ar/39Ar ages are commonly dismissed as “too old” on account of “excess Ar.” We present 32 step-heating 40Ar/39Ar ages from 17 samples from central Himachal Pradesh Himalaya, India. In almost all cases, the biotite ages are older than predicted from cooling histories. We document host-rock lithology and chemical composition, mica microstructures, biotite chemical composition, and chlorite and muscovite components of biotite separates to demonstrate that these factors do not offer an explanation for the anomalously old biotite 40Ar/39Ar ages. We discuss possible mechanisms that may account for extraneous Ar (inherited or excess Ar) in these samples. The most likely cause for “too-old” biotite is excess Ar, i.e., 40Ar that is separated from its parent K. We suggest that this contamination resulted from one or several of the following mechanisms: (1) 40Ar was released during Cenozoic prograde metamorphism; (2) 40Ar transport was restricted due to a temporarily dry intergranular medium; (3) 40Ar was released from melt into a hydrous fluid phase during melt crystallization. Samples from the Main Central Thrust shear zone may be affected by a different mechanism of excess-Ar accumulation, possibly linked to later-stage fluid circulation within the shear zone and chloritization.     Der Geologische Dienst von Sachsen feiert im Jahr 2022 sein 150-jähriges Jubiläum – am 6. April 1872 wurde die Geologische Landesuntersuchung im Königreich Sachsen gegründet. Auf 153 Seiten der Reihe „Geoprofil“ werden Einblicke in die Arbeit des Geologischen Dienstes im LfULG, seinen Aufgaben und die Dienste als zuständige Fachbehörde gegeben. Die elf Einzelbeiträge zeigen die aktuellen Herausforderungen und Chancen, die sich aus den Themenbereichen Umwelt, Naturschutz und Geologie für Sachsen stellen.     Untersuchungen zur Oberflächenbelastung der Walzen von Gutbett-Walzenmühlen

    Die Gutbettwalzenmühle wird heute in vielen Industriezweigen zur Mahlung spröder Stoffe eingesetzt. Sie zeichnet sich durch eine energieeffiziente Arbeitsweise aus und stellt eine Alternative zu herkömmlichen Zerkleinerungsmaschinen, wie Kugel- und SAG-Mühlen, dar. In der Vergangenheit kam es durch Schäden an den Walzenoberflächen zu Problemen mit der Betriebssicherheit dieser Maschinen. Hervorgerufen werden die Schäden u.a. durch punktuelle Überlastungen der Walzenoberfläche, die durch im Gutbett eingelagerte grobe Einzelpartikel verursacht werden können. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden Versuche mit einer hydraulischen Stempelpresse zur Ermittlung der Walzenbelastung von Gutbettwalzenmühlen durchgeführt und der Einfluss verschiedener Maschinen-, Verfahrens- und Materialparameter untersucht. Auf der Grundlage des Versuchsprogramms wird eine Modellbetrachtung zur Walzenbelastung durchgeführt, mit deren Hilfe auf das Lastkollektiv aus der Gutbett- und Einzelkornbelastung geschlossen werden kann

    Role of disease activity for decision making ability in early multiple sclerosis

    Background and purpose: Decision making (DM) has been defined as the process through which a person forms preferences, selects and executes actions, and evaluates the outcome related to a selected choice. This ability represents an important factor for adequate behaviour in everyday life. DM impairment in multiple sclerosis (MS) has been previously reported. The purpose of the present study was to assess DM in patients with MS at the earliest clinically detectable time point of the disease. Methods: Patients with definite (n=109) or possible (clinically isolated syndrome, CIS; n=56) MS, a short disease duration (mean 2.3 years) and a minor neurological disability (mean EDSS 1.8) were compared to 50 healthy controls aged 18 to 60 years (mean age 32.2) using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). Subjects had to select a card from any of 4 decks (A/B [disadvantageous]; C/D [advantageous]). The game consisted of 100 trials then grouped in blocks of 20 cards for data analysis. Skill in DM was assessed by means of a learning index (LI) defined as the difference between the averaged last three block indexes and first two block indexes (LI=[(BI-3+BI-4+BI-5)/3-(BI-1+B2)/2]). Non parametric tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: LI was higher in the control group (0.24, SD 0.44) than in the MS group (0.21, SD 0.38), however without reaching statistical significance (p=0.7). Interesting differences were detected when MS patients were grouped according to phenotype. A trend to a difference between MS subgroups and controls was observed for LI (p=0.06), which became significant between MS subgroups (p=0.03). CIS patients who confirmed MS diagnosis by presenting a second relapse after study entry showed a dysfunction in the IGT in comparison to the other CIS (p=0.01) and definite MS (p=0.04) patients. In the opposite, CIS patients characterised by not entirely fulfilled McDonald criteria at inclusion and absence of relapse during the study showed an normal learning pattern on the IGT. Finally, comparing MS patients who developed relapses after study entry, those who remained clinically stable and controls, we observed impaired performances only in relapsing patients in comparison to stable patients (p=0.008) and controls (p=0.03). Discussion: These results raise the assumption of a sustained role for both MS relapsing activity and disease heterogeneity (i.e. infra-clinical severity or activity of MS) in the impaired process of decision making

    Rietveld refinement of disordered illite-smectite mixed-layer structures by a recursive algorithm. II : Powder-pattern refinement and quantitative phase analysis

    X-ray diffraction (XRD) of powdered materials is one of the most common methods used for structural characterization as well as for the quantification of mineral contents in mixtures. The application of the Rietveld method for that purpose requires structure models for each phase. The recursive calculation of structure factors was applied here to the Rietveld refinement of XRD powder patterns of illite-smectite (I-S) minerals. This approach allowed implementation of stacking disorder in structural models. Models for disordered stacking of cis-vacant and trans-vacant dioctahedral 2:1 layers as well as rotational disorder were combined with models for mixed layering of illitic and smectitic layers. The DIFFaX code was used to simulate non-basal (hk) reflections of illites with different degrees of disorder. Rietveld refinements of these simulated patterns were used to evaluate the application of this new approach. A model describing rotational disorder (n·120° and n·60° rotations) and mixed layering of cisvacant and trans-vacant dioctahedral layers was tested. Different starting parameters led to identical results within the ranges of standard deviations and confirmed the stability of the automatic refinement procedure. The influence on the refinement result of an incorrect choice of fixed parameters was demonstrated. The hk model was combined with models describing the basal reflections of disordered I-S and tested on measured data. A glauconitic mineral (Urkut, Hungary), an ordered I-S (ISCz-1, a special clay in the Source Clays Repository of The Clay Minerals Society), and a dioctahedral I-S (F4, Füze ́rradva ́ny, Hungary) were used as test substances. Parameters describing the mixed layering of illitic and smectitic layers were compared with the results from refinements of oriented mounts and showed good agreement. A pattern of a physical mixture of an I-S mineral and a turbostratically disordered smectite was analyzed in order to test the new approach for application in quantitative phase analysis.     X-ray diffraction patterns of oriented mounts of clay minerals are often used in clay mineralogy for qualitative and quantitative purposes. Fequently occurring stacking defects, in particular, can be characterized by this technique. Modeling of these diffraction profiles has become an important tool in obtaining structural information about the nature of stacking order. Manual matching of calculated and observed patterns is time consuming and user dependent. Automatic refinement procedures are, therefore, desirable. An improved approach for the treatment of disordered layer structures within a Rietveld refinement is presented here. The recursive calculation of structure factors, similar to that of the simulation program DIFFaX, was introduced in the Rietveld code BGMN. Complete implementation is formulated within the interpreter language of the Rietveld code and is transparent as well as flexible. Such a method has opened the application of Rietveld refinement to patterns of oriented mounts where only basal reflections of stacking disordered structures were recorded. The DIFFaX code was used to simulate basal reflections of illite-smectite mixed layers (I-S) with different ratios of illitic and smectitic layers and with different degrees of long-range ordering (Reichweite). Rietveld refinements with these simulated patterns were used to evaluate the application of this new approach. Several I-S with different degrees of ordering were also chosen as tests for the refinement of basal reflections.     Late Palaeozoic red beds elucidate fluvial architectures preserving large woody debris in the seasonal tropics of central Pangaea

    Fluvial red beds containing anatomically preserved large woody debris shed new light on seasonally dry biomes of the Pennsylvanian–Permian transition and elucidate the concurrence of river depositional systems and vegetation. As a result, the occurrence, distribution and preservation of petrified large woody debris accumulations are considered crucial to understanding the role of arborescent vegetation in shaping fluvial environments. This study reports sizeable silicified trunks and corresponding fluvial architectures from the uppermost Pennsylvanian (upper Gzhelian) Siebigerode Formation (Kyffhäuser, central Germany). The origin, taphonomy and depositional environment of the fossil woods are elucidated by using a multidisciplinary approach including geological mapping, lithofacies analysis, sediment petrography, wood anatomical studies and microstructure analyses. Results reflect the gradual burial of a gentle basement elevation by sand-bed to gravel-bed braided rivers at the north-western margin of the perimontane Saale Basin. Facies architectures resulted from a complex interplay of syndepositional tectonics, repeated palaeorelief rejuvenation, high-frequency channel avulsion, seasonally dry climate and woody debris–sediment interactions. The alluvial influx and cut-bank erosion recruited trunks from adjacent semi-riparian slope habitats vegetated by up to 40 m tall cordaitaleans and conifers. High discharge in wide braids facilitated uncongested transport of large woody debris. Trunk entombment and initial preservation resulted from grounding on barforms, anchoring by attached roots and subsequent burial. The post-depositional two-phase silicification was influenced by hydrothermal hematite mineralization and determined a selective wood preservation pattern known as ‘pointstone’.
