Polymers with attractive interactions on the Husimi tree
We obtain the solution of models of self-avoiding walks with attractive
interactions on Husimi lattices built with squares. Two attractive interactions
are considered: between monomers on first-neighbor sites and not consecutive
along a walk and between bonds located on opposite edges of elementary squares.
For coordination numbers q>4, two phases, one polymerized the other
non-polymerized, are present in the phase diagram. For small values of the
attractive interaction the transition between those phases is continuous, but
for higher values a first-order transition is found. Both regimes are separated
by a tricritical point. For q=4 a richer phase diagram is found, with an
additional (dense) polymerized phase, which is stable for for sufficiently
strong interactions between bonds. The phase diagram of the model in the
three-dimensional parameter space displays surfaces of continuous and
discontinuous phase transitions and lines of tricritical points, critical
endpoints and triple points.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Exclusive measurement of coherent eta photoproduction from the deuteron
Coherent photoproduction of eta mesons from the deuteron has been measured
from threshold up to incident photon energies of 750 MeV using the photon
spectrometer TAPS at the tagged photon facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI.
For the first time, differential coherent cross sections have been deduced from
the coincident detection of the eta meson and the recoil deuteron. A missing
energy analysis was used for the suppression of background events so that a
very clean identification of coherent eta-photoproduction was achieved. The
resulting cross sections agree with previous experimental results except for
angles around 90 deg in the photon-deuteron cm-system where they are smaller.
They are compared to various model calculations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Regular and quasi black hole solutions for spherically symmetric charged dust distributions in the Einstein-Maxwell theory
Static spherically symmetric distributions of electrically counterpoised dust
(ECD) are used to construct solutions to Einstein-Maxwell equations in
Majumdar--Papapetrou formalism. Unexpected bifurcating behaviour of solutions
with regard to source strength is found for localized, as well as for the
delta-function ECD distributions. Unified treatment of general ECD
distributions is accomplished and it is shown that for certain source strengths
one class of regular solutions approaches Minkowski spacetime, while the other
comes arbitrarily close to black hole solutions.Comment: LaTeX (IOP style) 17 pages, 10 figure
The number of transmission channels through a single-molecule junction
We calculate transmission eigenvalue distributions for Pt-benzene-Pt and
Pt-butadiene-Pt junctions using realistic state-of-the-art many-body
techniques. An effective field theory of interacting -electrons is used to
include screening and van der Waals interactions with the metal electrodes. We
find that the number of dominant transmission channels in a molecular junction
is equal to the degeneracy of the molecular orbital closest to the metal Fermi
level.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Photoproduction of pi0-mesons from nuclei
Photoproduction of neutral pions from nuclei (carbon, calcium, niobium, lead)
has been studied for incident photon energies from 200 MeV to 800 MeV with the
TAPS detector using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI
accelerator. Data were obtained for the inclusive photoproduction of neutral
pions and the partial channels of quasifree single pi0, double pi0, and
pi0pi+/- photoproduction. They have been analyzed in terms of the in-medium
behavior of nucleon resonances and the pion - nucleus interaction. They are
compared to earlier measurements from the deuteron and to the predictions of a
Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model for photon induced pion
production from nuclei.Comment: 15 pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication in EPJ
Use of Lambert's Theorem for the n-Dimensional Coulomb Problem
We present the analytical solution in closed form for the semiclassical limit
of the quantum mechanical Coulomb Green function in position space in n
dimensions. We utilize a projection method which has its roots in Lambert's
theorem and which allows us to treat the system as an essentially one
dimensional problem. The semiclassical result assumes a simple analytical form
and is well suited for a numerical evaluation. The method can also be extended
to classically forbidden space regions. Already for moderately large principal
quantum numbers nu >= 5, the semiclassical Green function is found to be an
excellent approximation to the quantum mechanical Green function.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. Accepted in Phys. Rev.
a0+(980)-resonance production in pp->dK+Kbar0 reactions close to threshold
The reaction pp->d K+ Kbar0 has been investigated at an excess energy of Q=46
MeV above the (K+ Kbar0) threshold with ANKE at COSY-Juelich. From the detected
coincident dK+ pairs about 1000 events with a missing Kbar0 were identified,
corresponding to a total cross section of sigma(pp->d K+ Kbar0)=(38 +/- 2(stat)
+/- 14(syst)) nb. Invariant-mass and angular distributions have been jointly
analyzed and reveal s-wave dominance between the two kaons, accompanied by a
p-wave between the deuteron and the kaon system. This is interpreted in terms
of a0+(980)-resonance production.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; accepted by Phys. Rev. Let
Evidence of kaon nuclear and Coulomb potential effects on soft K+ production from nuclei
The ratio of forward K+ production on copper, silver and gold targets to that
on carbon has been measured at proton beam energies between 1.5 and 2.3 GeV as
a function of the kaon momentum p_K using the ANKE spectrometer at
COSY-Juelich. The strong suppression in the ratios observed for p_K<200-250
MeV/c can be ascribed to a combination of Coulomb and nuclear repulsion in the
K+A system. This opens a new way to investigate the interaction of K+-mesons in
the nuclear medium. Our data are consistent with a K+A nuclear potential of
V_K~20 MeV at low kaon momenta and normal nuclear density. Given the
sensitivity of the data to the kaon potential, the current experimental
precision might allow one to determine V_K to better than 3 MeV.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures; changed conten
Conflict in the Indian Kashmir Valley I: exposure to violence
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: India and Pakistan have disputed ownership of the Kashmir Valley region for many years, resulting in several conflicts since the end of partition in 1947. Very little is known about the prevalence of violence and insecurity in this population. METHODS: We undertook a two-stage cluster household survey in two districts (30 villages) of the Indian part of Kashmir to assess experiences with violence and mental health status among the conflict-affected Kashmiri population. The article presents our findings for confrontations with violence. Data were collected for recent events (last 3 months) and those occurring since the start of the conflict. Informed consent was obtained for all interviews. RESULTS: 510 interviews were completed. Respondents reported frequent direct confrontations with violence since the start of conflict, including exposure to crossfire (85.7%), round up raids (82.7%), the witnessing of torture (66.9%), rape (13.3%), and self-experience of forced labour (33.7%), arrests/kidnapping (16.9%), torture (12.9%), and sexual violence (11.6%). Males reported more confrontations with violence than females, and had an increased likelihood of having directly experienced physical/mental maltreatment (OR 3.9, CI: 2.7-5.7), violation of their modesty (OR 3.6, CI: 1.9-6.8) and injury (OR 3.5, CI: 1.4-8.7). Males also had high odds of self-being arrested/kidnapped (OR 8.0, CI: 4.1-15.5). CONCLUSION: The civilian population in Kashmir is exposed to high levels of violence, as demonstrated by the high frequency of deliberate events as detention, hostage, and torture. The reported violence may result in substantial health, including mental health problems. Males reported significantly more confrontations with almost all violent events; this can be explained by higher participation in outdoor activities
