Recording and wear characteristics of 4 and 8 mm helical scan tapes
Performance data of media on helical scan tape systems (4 and 8 mm) is presented and various types of media are compared. All measurements were performed on a standard MediaLogic model ML4500 Tape Evaluator System with a Flash Converter option for time based measurements. The 8 mm tapes are tested on an Exabyte 8200 drive and 4 mm tapes on an Archive Python drive; in both cases, the head transformer is directly connected to a Media Logic Read/Write circuit and test electronics. The drive functions only as a tape transport and its data recover circuits are not used. Signal to Noise, PW 50, Peak Shift and Wear Test data is used to compare the performance of MP (metal particle), BaFe, and metal evaporate (ME). ME tape is the clear winner in magnetic performance but its susceptibility to wear and corrosion, make it less than ideal for data storage
Quantum state tomography of molecular rotation
We show how the rotational quantum state of a linear or symmetric top rotor
can be reconstructed from finite time observations of the polar angular
distribution under certain conditions. The presented tomographic method can
reconstruct the complete rotational quantum state in many non-adiabatic
alignment experiments. Our analysis applies for measurement data available with
existing measurement techniques.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur

Plasmonic Resonances and Electromagnetic Forces Between Coupled Silver Nanowires
We compute the electromagnetic response and corresponding forces between two
silver nanowires. The wires are illuminated by a plane wave which has the
electric field vector perpendicular to the axis of the wires, insuring that
plasmonic resonances can be excited. We consider a nontrivial square cross
section geometry that has dimensions on the order of , where
is the wavelength of the incident electromagnetic field. We find that
due to the plasmonic resonance, there occurs great enhancement of the direct
and mutual electromagnetic forces that are exerted on the nanowires. The
Lippman-Schwinger volume integral equation is implemented to obtain solutions
to Maxwell's equations for various and separation distances between
wires. The forces are computed using Maxwell's stress tensor and numerical
results are shown for both on and off resonant conditions
A new Q-matrix in the Eight-Vertex Model
We construct a -matrix for the eight-vertex model at roots of unity for
crossing parameter with odd , a case for which the existing
constructions do not work. The new -matrix \Q depends as usual on the
spectral parameter and also on a free parameter . For \Q has the
standard properties. For , however, it does not commute with the
operator and not with itself for different values of the spectral
parameter. We show that the six-vertex limit of \Q(v,t=iK'/2) exists.Comment: 10 pages section on quasiperiodicity added, typo corrected, published

The lexical nature of alpha-beta oscillations in context-driven word production
In context-driven word production, picture naming is faster following constrained than neutral sentential contexts (e.g., “The farmer milked the… [picture]” vs. “The child drew a… [picture]”, followed by the picture of a cow), suggesting conceptual-lexical pre-activation of the target response. Power decreases in the alpha-beta oscillatory band (8–25 Hz) are consistently found for constrained relative to neutral contexts prior to picture onset, when conceptual and lexical retrieval is ongoing. However, it remains a matter of debate whether the alpha-beta power decreases reflect (low-level) expectations of the visual input, conceptual and lexical retrieval, or motor preparation. The present study aimed at investigating the lexical-semantic nature of alpha-beta oscillations. Participants performed context-driven picture naming with constrained and neutral contexts. In addition, an auditory distractor word was presented before picture onset. Distractors were either semantically related (e.g., “goat”) or unrelated (e.g., “bean”) to the picture to be named. Picture naming was faster with constrained than neutral contexts. Distractor type did not affect naming latencies nor the behavioural context effect. In the oscillatory brain responses, the context-related alpha-beta power decreases were observed throughout the pre-picture interval when distractors were semantically unrelated to the picture, in line with previous findings. However, with semantically related distractors, the context effect was delayed until a period after distractor processing. Thus, alpha-beta power seems to be sensitive to the semantic relationship between the distractor word and the picture to be named. We interpret these results as suggesting that alpha-beta power decreases in context-driven word production reflect lexical-semantic retrieval mechanisms
Nonperturbative contributions to the QCD pressure
We summarize the most important arguments why a perturbative description of
finite-temperature QCD is unlikely to be possible and review various
well-established approaches to deal with this problem. Then, using a recently
proposed method, we investigate nonperturbative contributions to the QCD
pressure and other observables (like energy, anomaly and bulk viscosity)
obtained by imposing a functional cutoff at the Gribov horizon. Finally, we
discuss how such contributions fit into the picture of consecutive effective
theories, as proposed by Braaten and Nieto, and give an outline of the next
steps necessary to improve this type of calculation.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, uses xcolor.sty; in v2 quality of some figures
