    H2-powered aviation – Design and economics of green LH2 supply for airports

    The economic competitiveness of hydrogen-powered aviation highly depends on the supply costs of green liquid hydrogen to enable true-zero CO2 flying. This study uses non-linear energy system optimization to analyze three main liquid hydrogen (LH2) supply pathways for five locations. Final liquid hydrogen costs at the dispenser supply costs could reach 2.04 USD/kgLH2 in a 2050 base case scenario for locations with strong renewable energy source conditions. This could lead to cost-competitive flying with hydrogen. Reflecting techno-economic uncertainties in two additional scenarios, the liquid hydrogen cost span at all five airport locations ranges between 1.37–3.48 USD/kgLH2, if hydrogen import options from larger hydrogen markets are also available. Import setups are of special importance for airports with a weaker renewable energy source situation, e.g., selected Central European airports. There, on-site supply might not only be too expensive, but space requirements for renewable energy sources could be too large for feasible implementation in densely populated regions. Furthermore, main costs for liquid hydrogen are caused by renewable energy sources, electrolysis systems, and liquefaction plants. Seven detailed design rules are derived for optimized energy systems for these and the storage components. This and the cost results should help infrastructure planners and general industry and policy players prioritize research and development needs

    Effect of ethnicity on access and device complications during endovascular aneurysm repair

    AbstractIntroductionThere are no published reports on the association between ethnicity and outcome after aortoiliac stent grafting to treat aneurismal disease. Because Hawaii is a state with an ethnically diverse population, we conducted a retrospective study to examine this potential association. We hypothesized that individuals of Asian ancestry may have higher complication rates after endovascular repair compared with non-Asians.MethodsAll endovascular devices placed to treat aneurysm disease from 1996 to 2003 were evaluated in two institutions. The association between ethnicity and access-related and device-related complications, both periprocedural and delayed, was examined with logistic regression analysis.ResultsNinety-two aortoiliac endografts were placed during the study period, including 87 in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms with or without iliac aneurysm disease, and five patients with isolated iliac artery aneurysms. Forty-four percent of patients were categorized as Asian, 39% as white, 16% as Pacific Islander, and 1% as African American. Access-related and device-related complications (ADRCs) occurred in 11 of 92 (12%) of these patients. The following parameters were significantly associated with ADRCs: Asian ethnicity (P =.015), age greater than 80 years (P = .02), and external iliac diameter smaller than 7.5 mm (P =.01). Asian patients were more likely to have experienced ADRCs than were non-Asian patients (odds ratio, 7.3; 95% confidence interval, 1.5-35.8; P = .015). Asians also had smaller external iliac artery diameters (P = .0003) and more tortuous iliac arteries (P = .03) compared with non-Asians. After adjusting for iliac artery diameter and tortuosity, the association between Asian ethnicity and ARDCs became nonsignificant (P = .074), which suggests that the association between race and complications may be at least in part due to small and tortuous iliac arteries. There was no association between age, gender, or ethnicity and postoperative detection of endoleak.ConclusionOur data indicate that individuals of Asian ancestry are far more likely to experience adverse access-related and device-related complications after aortoiliac stent grafting than are non-Asians. We found that this association is at least partly attributable to the smaller and more tortuous iliac arteries in persons of Asian ancestry

    Oscillatory variations in the Q factors of high quality micropillar cavities

    We report on the observation of oscillatory variations in the quality (Q) factor of quantum dot-micropillar cavities based on planar Bragg reflectors. The oscillatory behavior in the Q versus diameter dependence appears in the diameter range between 1.0 and 4.0 mu m, has a characteristic period of a few hundred nanometers and increases in amplitude with increasing reflectivity of the planar microcavity structures. The experimental results are well reproduced by numerical calculations which support the interpretation that the Q oscillations are caused by coupling of propagating Bloch modes of different orders at the mirror interfaces.</p

    Measurements of polarized photo-pion production on longitudinally polarized HD and Implications for Convergence of the GDH Integral

    We report new measurements of inclusive pion production from frozen-spin HD for polarized photon beams covering the Delta(1232) resonance. These provide data simultaneously on both H and D with nearly complete angular distributions of the spin-difference cross sections entering the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule. Recent results from Mainz and Bonn exceed the GDH prediction for the proton by 22 microbarns, suggesting as yet unmeasured high-energy components. Our pi0 data reveal a different angular dependence than assumed in Mainz analyses and integrate to a value that is 18 microbarns lower, suggesting a more rapid convergence. Our results for deuterium are somewhat lower than published data, considerably more precise and generally lower than available calculations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.     We study the effect of pure dephasing on the strong-coupling between a quantum dot and the single mode of a microcavity in the nonlinear regime. We show that the photoluminescence spectrum of the system has a robust tendency to display triplet structures, instead of the expected Jaynes-Cummings pairs of doublets at the incommensurate frequencies ±(n±n−1)\pm(\sqrt{n}\pm\sqrt{n-1}) for integer nn.     H5N1 Whole-Virus Vaccine Induces Neutralizing Antibodies in Humans Which Are Protective in a Mouse Passive Transfer Model

    BACKGROUND: Vero cell culture-derived whole-virus H5N1 vaccines have been extensively tested in clinical trials and consistently demonstrated to be safe and immunogenic; however, clinical efficacy is difficult to evaluate in the absence of wide-spread human disease. A lethal mouse model has been utilized which allows investigation of the protective efficacy of active vaccination or passive transfer of vaccine induced sera following lethal H5N1 challenge. METHODS: We used passive transfer of immune sera to investigate antibody-mediated protection elicited by a Vero cell-derived, non-adjuvanted inactivated whole-virus H5N1 vaccine. Mice were injected intravenously with H5N1 vaccine-induced rodent or human immune sera and subsequently challenged with a lethal dose of wild-type H5N1 virus. RESULTS: Passive transfer of H5N1 vaccine-induced mouse, guinea pig and human immune sera provided dose-dependent protection of recipient mice against lethal challenge with wild-type H5N1 virus. Protective dose fifty values for serum H5N1 neutralizing antibody titers were calculated to be ≤1∶11 for all immune sera, independently of source species. CONCLUSIONS: These data underpin the confidence that the Vero cell culture-derived, whole-virus H5N1 vaccine will be effective in a pandemic situation and support the use of neutralizing serum antibody titers as a correlate of protection for H5N1 vaccines
