RCCNet: An Efficient Convolutional Neural Network for Histological Routine Colon Cancer Nuclei Classification

Efficient and precise classification of histological cell nuclei is of utmost importance due to its potential applications in the field of medical image analysis. It would facilitate the medical practitioners to better understand and explore various factors for cancer treatment. The classification of histological cell nuclei is a challenging task due to the cellular heterogeneity. This paper proposes an efficient Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based architecture for classification of histological routine colon cancer nuclei named as RCCNet. The main objective of this network is to keep the CNN model as simple as possible. The proposed RCCNet model consists of only 1,512,868 learnable parameters which are significantly less compared to the popular CNN models such as AlexNet, CIFARVGG, GoogLeNet, and WRN. The experiments are conducted over publicly available routine colon cancer histological dataset "CRCHistoPhenotypes". The results of the proposed RCCNet model are compared with five state-of-the-art CNN models in terms of the accuracy, weighted average F1 score and training time. The proposed method has achieved a classification accuracy of 80.61% and 0.7887 weighted average F1 score. The proposed RCCNet is more efficient and generalized terms of the training time and data over-fitting, respectively.Comment: Published in ICARCV 201

An incidental colonoscopy: finding Trichuris trichiura: a case report and review of literature

Trichuris trichiura commonly referred to as whipworm, has a world-wide distribution, particularly countries with warm, humid climates. This parasite is reported from nearly one quarter of the world population, especially from less developed countries. Poor hygiene conditions are associated with trichuris transmission, usually this infection remains asymptomatic in human but heavy infection can lead to chronic bloody diarrhoea associated with complications like rectal prolapsed, appendicitis, proctitis. Very few cases of extensive trichuriasis have been reported world-wide. Usually, diagnosis is confirmed by detection of eggs in stool sample. This case report deals with a patient of trichuriasis, who was diagnosed by detection of the parasite on colonoscopy. Thus, colonoscopy might be a useful diagnostic tool, especially in symptomatic patients who are infected by only few male worms with no eggs in the stool. Hence cannot be diagnosed by conventional methods

Background: Burns represent a serious problem around the world especially in low and middle income countries. The aim of this study was to determine epidemiological characteristics, causes and mortality rate of burn deaths in tertiary care hospital of N India as well as to guide future education and prevention programs. Methods: A one year cross-sectional study of all burn patients admitted in Dr. RPGMC Tanda, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India was conducted between January 2014-December 2014.Results: Our study revealed that type II (absence of sutural bones) was commoner than type I (presence of type I) asterion. Total of 210 burn injury patients were admitted majority were males[54.5%] and females were [45.5%] males sustained burn injuries mostly at their work place with electric burns whereas females sustained burn injuries at home with cooking appliances. Conclusions: Burn injuries can be reduced by bringing about regulations to develop safer cooking appliances, promoting less inflammable fabrics to be worn out at home and educating the community especially women.

Use of a Distal Radius Endoprosthesis Following Resection of a Bone Tumour: A Case Report

    Get PDF
Limited literature is available on the reconstruction of the distal radius using prosthetic replacement following resection of a bone tumour. We present the first reported case, in the English literature, of the use of an entirely metal endoprosthesis for the reconstruction of the distal radius. This case involves a 66-year-old male who was treated for giant cell tumour of the distal radius with surgical excision of the lesion and replacement of the defect using a predominantly titanium endoprosthesis. He was followed-up for 56 months following surgery and had a good functional outcome with no associated pain or complications. We propose that the use of a primarily titanium endoprosthesis for the reconstruction of a bone defect of the distal radius is a suitable alternative, providing good function of the forearm with satisfactory range of movement at the wrist and adequate pain relief

Effectiveness and efficacy of zinc for the treatment of acute diarrhea in young children

Intervention trials have shown that zinc is efficacious in treating acute diarrhea in children of developing countries. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, we assessed the effectiveness and efficacy of giving 3 Recommended Daily Allowances of elemental zinc to 6- to 35-month-old children with acute diarrhea. Methods: Seventeen hundred ninety-two cases of acute diarrhea in Nepalese children were randomized to 4 study groups. Three groups were blinded and the children supplemented daily by field workers with placebo syrup, zinc syrup, or zinc syrup and a massive dose of vitamin A at enrollment. The fourth group was open and the caretaker gave the children zinc syrup daily. Day-wise information on morbidity was obtained by household visits every fifth day. Results: The relative hazards for termination of diarrhea were 26% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 8%, 46%), 21% (95% CI: 4%, 38%), and 19% (95% CI: 2%, 40%) higher in the zinc, zinc-vitamin A, and zinc-caretaker groups, respectively, than in the placebo group. The relative risks of prolonged diarrhea (duration >7 days) in these groups were 0.57 (95% CI: 0.38, 0.86), 0.53 (95% CI: 0.35, 0.81), and 0.55 (0.37, 0.84); zinc accordingly reduced the risk of prolonged diarrhea with 43% to 47%. Five percent and 5.1% of all syrup administrations were followed by regurgitation in the zinc and zinc-vitamin A group, respectively, whereas this occurred after only 1.3% of placebo administrations. Vomiting during diarrhea was also more common in children receiving zinc. Conclusions: Three Recommended Daily Allowances of zinc given daily by caretakers or by field workers substantially reduced the duration of diarrhea. The effect of zinc was not dependent on or enhanced by concomitant vitamin A administration

Design, synthesis and biological evaluation of Arylpiperazine-based novel Phthalimides: active inducers of testicular germ cell apoptosis

Understanding of apoptosis or programmed cell death has provided the basis for novel therapeutics that has resulted in rationally designed anticancer strategies. Recently, inducers of apoptosis have been used in cancer therapy. In this work, we describe the role of chiral phthalimides functionalized with piperazines as potential apoptotic inducers. The listed twenty phthalimides were assessed for their in vitro apoptotic activity against testicular germ cells. All phthalimides showed a significant apoptotic response (∼39 to ∼68%). TUNEL assay and acridine orange fluorescence staining were carried out to investigate the molecular mechanisms responsible for the cell death. Phthalimides exhibited substantial apoptotic induction following the intrinsic pathway mechanism. Studies advocated that the apoptotic induction was mediated through caspase-9, caspase-3, JNK MAP kinase and tumor suppressor p53, which was accompanied by DNA fragmentation and nuclear condensation. Besides, the best five phthalimides regarding apoptotic action were evaluated for in vitro cytotoxic effects against CAL-72 and MCF-7 cancer cell lines. Compounds showed efficient killing of cancer cells. This discovery of functionalized phthalimides as apoptotic inducers would be highly valuable in understanding the mechanism of apoptosis at the molecular level and opens up new possibilities for therapeutic strategies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
