In-orbit Vignetting Calibrations of XMM-Newton Telescopes
We describe measurements of the mirror vignetting in the XMM-Newton
Observatory made in-orbit, using observations of SNR G21.5-09 and SNR
3C58 with the EPIC imaging cameras. The instrument features that complicate
these measurements are briefly described. We show the spatial and energy
dependences of measured vignetting, outlining assumptions made in deriving the
eventual agreement between simulation and measurement. Alternate methods to
confirm these are described, including an assessment of source elongation with
off-axis angle, the surface brightness distribution of the diffuse X-ray
background, and the consistency of Coma cluster emission at different position
angles. A synthesis of these measurements leads to a change in the XMM
calibration data base, for the optical axis of two of the three telescopes, by
in excess of 1 arcminute. This has a small but measureable effect on the
assumed spectral responses of the cameras for on-axis targets.Comment: Accepted by Experimental Astronomy. 26 pages, 18 figure
Global Bounds for the Lyapunov Exponent and the Integrated Density of States of Random Schr\"odinger Operators in One Dimension
In this article we prove an upper bound for the Lyapunov exponent
and a two-sided bound for the integrated density of states at an
arbitrary energy of random Schr\"odinger operators in one dimension.
These Schr\"odinger operators are given by potentials of identical shape
centered at every lattice site but with non-overlapping supports and with
randomly varying coupling constants. Both types of bounds only involve
scattering data for the single-site potential. They show in particular that
both and decay at infinity at least like

A Higgs Mechanism for Gravity
In this paper we elaborate on the idea of an emergent spacetime which arises
due to the dynamical breaking of diffeomorphism invariance in the early
universe. In preparation for an explicit symmetry breaking scenario, we
consider nonlinear realizations of the group of analytical diffeomorphisms
which provide a unified description of spacetime structures. We find that
gravitational fields, such as the affine connection, metric and coordinates,
can all be interpreted as Goldstone fields of the diffeomorphism group. We then
construct a Higgs mechanism for gravity in which an affine spacetime evolves
into a Riemannian one by the condensation of a metric. The symmetry breaking
potential is identical to that of hybrid inflation but with the non-inflaton
scalar extended to a symmetric second rank tensor. This tensor is required for
the realization of the metric as a Higgs field. We finally comment on the role

The First INTEGRAL AGN Catalog
We present the first INTEGRAL AGN catalog, based on observations performed
from launch of the mission in October 2002 until January 2004. The catalog
includes 42 AGN, of which 10 are Seyfert 1, 17 are Seyfert 2, and 9 are
intermediate Seyfert 1.5. The fraction of blazars is rather small with 5
detected objects, and only one galaxy cluster and no star-burst galaxies have
been detected so far. A complete subset consists of 32 AGN with a significance
limit of 7 sigma in the INTEGRAL/ISGRI 20-40 keV data. Although the sample is
not flux limited, the distribution of sources shows a ratio of obscured to
unobscured AGN of 1.5 - 2.0, consistent with luminosity dependent unified
models for AGN. Only four Compton-thick AGN are found in the sample. Based on
the INTEGRAL data presented here, the Seyfert 2 spectra are slightly harder
(Gamma = 1.95 +- 0.01) than Seyfert 1.5 (Gamma = 2.10 +- 0.02) and Seyfert 1

Simplicity of eigenvalues in Anderson-type models
We show almost sure simplicity of eigenvalues for several models of
Anderson-type random Schr\"odinger operators, extending methods introduced by
Simon for the discrete Anderson model. These methods work throughout the
spectrum and are not restricted to the localization regime. We establish
general criteria for the simplicity of eigenvalues which can be interpreted as
separately excluding the absence of local and global symmetries, respectively.
The criteria are applied to Anderson models with matrix-valued potential as
well as with single-site potentials supported on a finite box.Comment: 20 page
Lyapunov exponent and natural invariant density determination of chaotic maps: An iterative maximum entropy ansatz
We apply the maximum entropy principle to construct the natural invariant
density and Lyapunov exponent of one-dimensional chaotic maps. Using a novel
function reconstruction technique that is based on the solution of Hausdorff
moment problem via maximizing Shannon entropy, we estimate the invariant
density and the Lyapunov exponent of nonlinear maps in one-dimension from a
knowledge of finite number of moments. The accuracy and the stability of the
algorithm are illustrated by comparing our results to a number of nonlinear
maps for which the exact analytical results are available. Furthermore, we also
consider a very complex example for which no exact analytical result for
invariant density is available. A comparison of our results to those available

Globalising assessment: an ethnography of literacy assessment, camels and fast food in the Mongolian Gobi
What happens when standardised literacy assessments travel globally? The paper presents an ethnographic account of adult literacy assessment events in rural Mongolia. It examines the dynamics of literacy assessment in terms of the movement and re-contextualisation of test items as they travel globally and are received locally by Mongolian respondents. The analysis of literacy assessment events is informed by Goodwinâs âparticipation frameworkâ on language as embodied and situated interactive phenomena and by Actor Network Theory. Actor Network Theory (ANT) is applied to examine literacy assessment events as processes of translation shaped by an âassemblageâ of human and non-human actors (including the assessment texts)
