Objectives - To investigate the influence of trait anxiety, sex, age andprevious dental treatment experience on dental anxiety.Design - The study utilised a cross-sectional survey design. Independentvariables are trait anxiety, sex, age and dental treatment experience.Dependent variable is dental anxiety.Setting - The dental centre of a teaching hospital in Nigeria.Participants - Data were collected from 255 (115 male and 140 female)respondents selected through purposive sampling technique. The mean agewas 28.59 years (SD=10.74 years). Results: This study revealed that respondents with high trait anxiety levelsreported significantly higher dental anxiety (t (253) =- 5.78, p <.01) thanthose with low trait anxiety. Male respondents reported significantly lowerdental anxiety (t (253) = -3.04, p < .05) than the females. Conclusion: Trait anxiety dispositions and sex are important predictors ofdental anxiety and should be taken seriously in the management of dentalanxiety at the various secondary care dental centres

Addressing Contending Issues and Embracing Emerging Trends in Library and Information Science Education for Sustainable Development in Nigeria

The emergence of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was largely attributed to the inability of many nations to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. This paper identifies unresolved contending issues in Library and Information Science (LIS) education and training in Nigeria, with case for embracing emerging trends, not only for sustainability of LIS schools, but also to contribute positively towards actualization of the SDGs. With specific references to polytechnic-based and university-based LIS schools, the contending issues range from nomenclature, curriculum, infrastructure and human resources. In polytechnic-based LIS schools, many courses need to be merged so as to create avenue for integration of contemporary courses; and possibly develop specializations such as information resources management, knowledge management, records and information management, and publishing and multimedia technologies at the Higher National Diploma (HND) level. For university-based LIS schools, the development of a new programme tagged ‘BSc. Information Science and Media Studies’ by the National Universities Commission (NUC) with curriculum that reflects information management and multimedia technology, may or may not be a threat to LIS education; however, rebranding and repackaging LIS to Information and Knowledge Management in line with global best practices is a way forward. In addition, a case for Master of Knowledge Management (MKM) programme in universities was made in order to address emerging opportunities. The paper concludes that these contending issues need to be addressed, emerging trends embraced, and university-based LIS schools in Nigeria should work towards ensuring that future master degree holders (MLIS graduates) possess practical computing skills in areas of programming, web design, content development, and library management systems

The article aims to discuss teaching effectiveness in relation to teacher demographic factors like teachers’ age and teachers’ gender among Secondary School teachers in Calabar Education Zone of Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve this aim, two hypotheses were stated and tested. These variables have important role to evaluate teachers’ effectiveness as scholarly proven through literatures. The descriptive survey design was adopted for use. The sample consist of one hundred and sixty-four (164) teachers and three hundred and twenty-eight (328) student from the Calabar Education Zone. Teachers’ Demographic Factors Questionnaire (TDFQ) and Teaching Effectiveness Questionnaire (TEQ) were developed by the researcher and validated by experts in Sociology of Education and Test/Measurement. The descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, a post-hoc scheffe & independent t-test were used. The result revealed that teachers’ age and gender significantly influence teaching effectiveness. Based on the findings, it is recommended among others that Government should see teachers age as an asset thereby put in more resources to train them so that they will be of benefit to the students and the society at large

Social Media: A Security Threat amongst Adolescents in Buea, Cameroon?

Social media provide a platform through which societies can either be constructed or destabilized. In view of the ongoing bloody conflicts in Cameroon, this study examines the extent to which social media could pose as a security threat (with particular focus on community security) amongst adolescents in Buea, capital of the South West Region in Cameroon. The study uses a quantitative approach, through the collection of data from adolescents in four communities in Buea (Muea, Bomaka, Mile 16, and Molyko). These four areas are selected because the current socio-political crisis rocking the two Anglophone regions of the country – Northwest and Southwest, is particularly severe in these communities. Social media (notably Facebook and WhatsApp) spread dangerous content, and adolescents are vulnerable to such content. Findings indicate that there is a high rate of social media use (Facebook and WhatsApp) amongst adolescents surveyed. Also, the most discussed items on social media are socio-cultural issues (68%), as opposed to political issues (17.8%). Respondents were receptive to discussions on socio-cultural issues like dressing, language and relationships. Results also show that though adolescents come across violent content on social media, they have distanced themselves from being involved in the production, consumption, and dissemination (for instance, share information as received) of such violent content, partly because of the judicial consequences of doing so, as contained in the country’s Terrorism Law of December 2014. The implication here is that, since the adolescents are not yet intoxicated (whether advertently or inadvertently) with destructive social media content, need exists for the effective education of the adolescents, to enable this vulnerable and younger population to continue desisting from negative social media content. Emphasis should be on the consumption of positive social media content that helps in the moral and psychological growth of adolescents
