    Discovering Shakespeare’s Personal Style: Editing and Connoisseurship in the Eighteenth Century

    This chapter examines the use of connoisseurial rhetoric by Shakespeare editors and critics over the course of the eighteenth century, beginning with Alexander Pope in 1723–5 and concluding with George Steevens in the 1780s and 1790s. Connoisseurship was originally developed by art critics as a discourse for authenticating paintings and drawings. Beginning with Pope, however, literary editors began to draw upon it as an analogy for representing authorial style. As I shall show through an examination of Steevens’s work in compiling the first chronological catalogue of William Hogarth’s prints and paintings, this convergence between art criticism and textual criticism involved more than a simple exchange of metaphors. Connoisseurship offered critics such as Steevens new ways of looking at artworks and assessing their genuineness, modes of vision that could be applied as readily to plays as to paintings. The eighteenth-century art market relied upon the expertise of the connoisseur, who could guarantee that a given painting stemmed from the hand of a particular master. Shakespeare publishing in the eighteenth century likewise came to depend on the expertise of the editor, who could reliably identify Shakespeare’s personal style and distinguish the genuine from the spurious

    Maximization of capacity and p-norms for some product channels

    It is conjectured that the Holevo capacity of a product channel \Omega \otimes \Phi is achieved when product states are used as input. Amosov, Holevo and Werner have also conjectured that the maximal p-norm of a product channel is achieved with product input states. In this paper we establish both of these conjectures in the case that \Omega is arbitrary and \Phi is a CQ or QC channel (as defined by Holevo). We also establish the Amosov, Holevo and Werner conjecture when \Omega is arbitrary and either \Phi is a qubit channel and p=2, or \Phi is a unital qubit channel and p is integer. Our proofs involve a new conjecture for the norm of an output state of the half-noisy channel I \otimes \Phi, when \Phi is a qubit channel. We show that this conjecture in some cases also implies additivity of the Holevo capacity

    Qubit channels with small correlations

    We introduce a class of quantum channels with correlations acting on pairs of qubits, where the correlation takes the form of a shift operator onto a maximally entangled state. We optimise the output purity and show that below a certain threshold the optimum is achieved by partially entangled states whose degree of entanglement increases monotonically with the correlation parameter. Above this threshold, the optimum is achieved by the maximally entangled state characterizing the shift. Although, a full analysis can only be done for the 2-norm, both numerical and heuristic arguments indicate that this behavior and the optimal inputs are independent of p>1 when the optimal output purity is measured using the p-norm.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 2 table

    Skull Flexure from Blast Waves: A Mechanism for Brain Injury with Implications for Helmet Design

    Traumatic brain injury [TBI] has become a signature injury of current military conflicts, with debilitating, costly, and long-lasting effects. Although mechanisms by which head impacts cause TBI have been well-researched, the mechanisms by which blasts cause TBI are not understood. From numerical hydrodynamic simulations, we have discovered that non-lethal blasts can induce sufficient skull flexure to generate potentially damaging loads in the brain, even without a head impact.     Saturated laser fluorescence in turbulent sooting flames at high pressure

    The primary objective was to develop a quantitative, single pulse, laser-saturated fluorescence (LSF) technique for measurement of radical species concentrations in practical flames. The species of immediate interest was the hydroxyl radical. Measurements were made in both turbulent premixed diffusion flames at pressures between 1 and 20 atm. Interferences from Mie scattering were assessed by doping with particles or by controlling soot loading through variation of equivalence ratio and fuel type. The efficacy of the LSF method at high pressure was addressed by comparing fluorescence and adsorption measurements in a premixed, laminar flat flame at 1-20 atm. Signal-averaging over many laser shots is sufficient to determine the local concentration of radical species in laminar flames. However, for turbulent flames, single pulse measurements are more appropriate since a statistically significant number of laser pulses is needed to determine the probability function (PDF). PDFs can be analyzed to give true average properties and true local kinetics in turbulent, chemically reactive flows

    Hopf algebras and characters of classical groups

    Schur functions provide an integral basis of the ring of symmetric functions. It is shown that this ring has a natural Hopf algebra structure by identifying the appropriate product, coproduct, unit, counit and antipode, and their properties. Characters of covariant tensor irreducible representations of the classical groups GL(n), O(n) and Sp(n) are then expressed in terms of Schur functions, and the Hopf algebra is exploited in the determination of group-subgroup branching rules and the decomposition of tensor products. The analysis is carried out in terms of n-independent universal characters. The corresponding rings, CharGL, CharO and CharSp, of universal characters each have their own natural Hopf algebra structure.     Thermomicrobium carboxidum sp. nov., and Thermorudis peleae gen. nov., sp. nov., carbon monoxide-oxidizing bacteria isolated from geothermally heated biofilms

    Two thermophilic, Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacteria (strains KI3T and KI4T) were isolated from geothermally heated biofilms growing on a tumulus in the Kilauea Iki pit crater on the flank of Kilauea Volcano (Hawai\u27i, USA). Strain KI3T grew over an examined temperature range of 50-70 °C (no growth at 80 °C) and a pH range of 6.0-9.0, with optimum growth at 70 °C and pH 7.0. Strain KI4T grew at temperatures of 55-70 °C and a pH range of 5.8-8.0, with optimum growth at 65 °C and pH 6.7-7.1. The DNA G+C contents of strains KI3T and KI4T were 66.0 and 60.7 mol%, respectively. The major fatty acid for both strains was 12-methyl C18: 0. Polar lipids in strain KI3T were dominated by glycolipids and phosphatidylinositol, while phosphatidylinositol and phosphoglycolipids dominated in strain KI4T. Strain KI3T oxidized carbon monoxide [6.7±0.8 nmol CO h-1 (mg protein)-1], but strain KI4T did not. 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses determined that the strains belong to the class Thermomicrobia, and that strains KI3T and KI4T are related most closely to Thermomicrobium roseum DSM 5159T (96.5 and 91.1 % similarity, respectively). 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain KI3T and strain KI4T was 91.4 %. Phenotypic features and phylogenetic analyses supported the affiliation of strain KI3T to the genus Thermomicrobium, while results of chemotaxonomic, physiological and biochemical assays differentiated strains KI3T and KI4T from Thermomicrobium roseum. Strain KI3T (= DSM 27067T = ATCC BAA-2535T) is thus considered to be the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Thermomicrobium carboxidumsp. nov. is proposed. Additionally, the characterization and phylogenetic position of strain KI4T showed that it represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Thermorudis peleae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed.
