    The effectiveness of GlideScope video laryngoscopy in the management of pediatric difficult airways

    The aim of this thesis is to quantify the intubation success rates and complication rates associated with GlideScopeĀ® video laryngoscopy in pediatric difficult airway patients. Difficult intubation is a major source of anesthesia-related morbidity and mortality in both adults and children (1-3). A number of studies have demonstrated that video laryngoscopy has helped to address this problem in adults, producing high intubation success rates with minimal complications (4-6). However, the literature on the use of videoscopes in children with difficult airways is sparse. We therefore sought to examine success and complication rates with the GlideScopeĀ®, a common type of video laryngoscope. To do so, we examined patient data from the Pediatric Difficult Intubation Registry, a collection of information on difficult airway incidents at fourteen pediatric teaching hospitals in the United States. From these data we calculated overall, first-pass, and rescue success rates on a per-attempt and per-patient basis, comparing them to success rates that resulted from using direct laryngoscopy. We also examined success rates for smaller groups of patients divided by Cormack-Lehane airway grade, weight, and muscle relaxant use. Finally, we assessed complication rates for patients undergoing GlideScopeĀ® intubation attempts and direct laryngoscopy. The GlideScopeĀ® produced lower success rates in our sample than those documented in adult difficult airway patients. This was particularly the case among smaller children and those with poor glottis visualization. However, the GlideScopeĀ® was superior to direct laryngoscopy by all measures and in all patient subgroups. We also found lower rates of hypoxemia and overall complications among patients receiving intubation attempts with only the GlideScopeĀ® versus only direct laryngoscopy. We believe this result may be related to the greater number of intubation attempts among patients receiving direct laryngoscopy

    Rank bias for elliptic curves mod pp

    We conjecture that, for a fixed prime pp, rational elliptic curves with higher rank tend to have more points mod pp. We show that there is an analogous bias for modular forms with respect to root numbers, and conjecture that the order of the rank bias for elliptic curves is greater than that of the root number bias for modular forms.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figure

    Residential Grief Camps: An Initial Phenomenological Study of Staff Perspectives

    Research has focused primarily on the impact of death on family functioning and the stages and tasks of grief, though little attention has been given to grief camps or the experiences of those who work there. This study explored the experiences of staff at a four-day overnight childrenā€™s grief camp. Eight participants reported their experience of camp in two major categories: connection to others and independence in grief and five themes. Camp provides the opportunity for campers to connect to others while finding their own path to healing. Clinical implications and future research directions are also discussed

    Attendees will be provided with a brief history/timeline of collegiate recovery as a field, through the lens of research (with a focus on the explosive growth in knowledge in the last decade). This initial presentation will be followed by a synopsis of the current state of collegiate recovery science, focusing on recent studies in the field (CRP alumni survey; meta-reviews; and any large impact studies published in the last year up to month of the conference). The session will end with a presentation on the directions for the future, making clear calls that not only does the research need to continue and in what suggested ways, but also serving to inspire students to engage in the process as they are our best hope to continue the work in innovative ways we haven't thought of. The current landscape of collegiate recovery research and recovery science overall. Additionally, attendees will be able to describe future directions for this type of inquiry. &nbsp

    Determination of Cabergoline by Electrospray Ionization Tandem Mass Spectrometry: Picogram Detection via Column Focusing Sample Introduction

    An electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometric method was developed for low-picogram detection of an ergot alkaloid, cabergoline, in coyote plasma extracts. Cabergoline is under investigation as an abortifacient in canid species. Central to the successful development of this method was the ability to introduce relatively large sample volumes into the mass spectrometer. This was achieved by focusing the analyte on a conventional high-performance liquid chromatography guard column prior to elution into the spectrometer. Volumes up to at least 900 Ī¼L could be injected onto the guard column using a 100% aqueous mobile phase. Cabergoline retained on the column was eluted as a discreet band into the mass spectrometer by the rapid addition of methanol (30%) to the mobile phase. As compared to flow injection sample introduction, the ability to inject larger sample volumes led to a greatly lowered detection limit. Using this technique and a modification of a previously reported extraction procedure, cabergoline could be determined in coyote plasma at concentrations as low as 9 pg of cabergoline/ mL of plasma

    Collegiate Recovery Students and Programs: Literature Review from 1988-2017

    Objectives: To present a review of the existing research on college students living in recovery, including the research on students in recovery participating in collegiate recovery programs.   Methods: Studies were included if they: a) were peer-reviewed or archived dissertations, b) were published between 1988 and 2017, c) directly involved students in recovery on campus, either with or without involvement in a collegiate recovery program. Results: From 1988 to 2017, 25 studies met the inclusion criteria. These included 7 studies on students living in recovery within the general framework of higher education and 18 studies involving students in collegiate recovery programs. Qualitative reports and quantitative descriptive studies were both included.  Conclusions: Findings identify the gaps in currently available research, and support rationale for increasing longitudinal and quantitative studies of collegiate recovery programs and the students they serve

    A method for multi-objective fault accommodation using predictive modeling is disclosed. The method includes using a simulated machine that simulates a faulted actual machine, and using a simulated controller that simulates an actual controller. A multi-objective optimization process is performed, based on specified control settings for the simulated controller and specified operational scenarios for the simulated machine controlled by the simulated controller, to generate a Pareto frontier-based solution space relating performance of the simulated machine to settings of the simulated controller, including adjustment to the operational scenarios to represent a fault condition of the simulated machine. Control settings of the actual controller are adjusted, represented by the simulated controller, for controlling the actual machine, represented by the simulated machine, in response to a fault condition of the actual machine, based on the Pareto frontier-based solution space, to maximize desirable operational conditions and minimize undesirable operational conditions while operating the actual machine in a region of the solution space defined by the Pareto frontier

    POWER (Providing the Outside World with Empowerment and Resources), a student organization within the Texas Techā€™s Collegiate Recovery Program established December 2015, elaborated on their members experience when engaging in the important effort of diversity outreach to persons in recovery from substance and alcohol use disorders and eating disorders.  POWER describes their mission statement to provide a foundation and a voice for underrepresented individuals in recovery by delivering positive end results through opportunities for success with a vision to instill hope for a promising future. These members along with the director of the CCRC and another staff member shared what they have found to be most effective and ineffective when presenting to diverse groups in their community. The presenters provided educational and recovery resources used in reaching out but also the varying and tailored approaches and techniques utilized when conducting outreach work to specific marginalized populations.  These materials and techniques have been honed through many presentations and experience since 2015.  During their presentation, student leaders, and members of POWER, shared their own personal experiences of marginalization as well as their experience as presenters/peer leaders

The Judeo-Christian tradition and current views on scholarship and Christian faith compel us to extend hospitality to minority voices within integration, thereby enriching and challenging existing paradigms in the field. Contributors to this article, spanning areas of cultural, disciplinary, and theological diversity, provide suggestions for how their distinct voices can enhance future integrative efforts
