    Effect of variety, growing region and growing season on digestible energy content of wheats grown in Western Australia for weaner pigs

    An experiment was conducted to examine the digestible energy (DE) content for weanling pigs in a cohort of wheats grown in Western Australia, and to establish relationships between DE content and their chemical composition. The 3 5 3 5 2 factorial experiment examined the wheat variety (Arrino, Stiletto and Westonia), growing location (high, medium and low rainfall zone) and harvest year (1999 and 2000). Pigs (no. = 5 per diet) aged about 28 days were given a diet at a level of 0.05 5 live weight containing 900 g/kg of the wheat and an acid-insoluble ash marker for 10 days, with samples of faeces collected from each pig for the final 5 days. The average live weight of pigs was 6.6 (s.d. 0.77) kg. The DE content of wheats harvested in 1999 varied by up to 1.3 MJ/kg, while wheats harvested in 2000 varied by up to 1.8 MJ/kg. When the 2 years' data were combined, the DE content ranged from 12.5 to 14.4 MJ/kg. Both the variety and growing region significantly influenced (P 0.05) with the wheats harvested in 2000. In addition, the precipitation level (mm) during the growing season of wheats was strongly correlated (r = -0.821, P < 0.01) to the DE content of wheat in year 1999, but was not correlated in 2000. The results indicate that the genetic and environmental conditions during the growth of wheat have a significant impact on the utilization of plant energy in weaner pigs, and that greater attention needs to be paid to these influences in the assignment of energy values for wheats given to weaner pigs

    Non-perturbative statistical theory of intermittency in ITG drift wave turbulence with zonal flows

    The probability distribution functions (PDFs) of momentum flux and zonal flow formation in ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) turbulence are investigated in two different models. The first is a general five-field model (ni, , Ti, Te, vi) where a reductive perturbation method is used to derive dynamical equations for drift waves and a zonal flow. The second is a reduced two-field model (, Ti) that has an exact non-linear solution (bipolar vortex soliton). In both models the exponential tails of the zonal flow PDFs are found with the same scaling ( ), but with different coefficients cZF. The PDFs of momentum flux is, however, found to be qualitatively different with the scaling (PDF ~ exp{−cMRs}), where s = 2 and s = 3/2 in the five and two-field models, respectively

    Axion and neutrino physics from anomaly cancellation

    It has been recently shown that the requirement of anomaly cancellation in a (non-supersymmetric) six-dimensional version of the standard model fixes the field content to the known three generations. We discuss the phenomenological consequences of the cancellation of the local anomalies: the strong CP problem is solved and the fundamental scale of the theory is bounded by the physics of the axion.     We addressed the inconsistency between the electron mass anisotropy ratios determined by the far-infrared experiments and DC conductivity measurements. By eliminating possible sources of error and increasing the sensitivity and resolution in the far-infrared reflectivity measurement on the single crystalline and on the polycrystalline La1.84Sr0.16CuO4, we have unambiguously identified that the source of the mass anisotropy problem is in the estimation of the free electron density involved in the charge transport and superconductivity. In this study we found that only 2.8 % of the total doping-induced charge density is itinerant at optimal doping. Our result not only resolves the mass anisotropy puzzle but also points to a novel electronic structure formed by the rest of the electrons that sets the stage for the high temperature superconductivity

    Fast Zonal Field Dynamo in Collisionless Kinetic Alfven Wave Turbulence

    The possibility of fast dynamo action by collisionless kinetic Alfven Wave turbulence is demonstrated. The irreversibility necessary to lock in the generated field is provided by electron Landau damping, so the induced electric field does not vanish with resistivity. Mechanisms for self-regulation of the system and the relation of these results to the theory of alpha quenching are discussed. The dynamo-generated fields have symmetry like to that of zonal flows, and thus are termed zonal fields

    On the Treatment of Neutrino Oscillations Without Resort to Weak Eigenstates

    We discuss neutrino oscillations in the framework of the quantum field theory without introducing the concept of neutrino weak eigenstates. The external particles are described by wave packets and the different mass eigenstate neutrinos propagate between the production and detection interactions, which are macroscopically localized in space-time. The time-averaged cross section, which is the measurable quantity in the usual experimental setting, is calculated.     Running of gauge couplings on a slice of AdS5 is examined using the deconstruction set-up. Logarithmic running instead of (linear) power law is justified when the cutoff is lower than the curvature scale.     Management of Hemodynamically Unstable Pelvic Ring Fractures

    Hemodynamically unstable pelvic fractures are challenging high-energy traumas. In many cases, these severely injured patients have additional traumatic injuries that also require a trauma surgeon's attention. However, these patients are often in extremis and require a multidisciplinary approach that needs to be set up in minutes. This calls for an evidence-based treatment algorithm. We think that the treatment of hemodynamically unstable pelvic fractures should primarily involve thorough resuscitation, mechanical stabilization, and preperitoneal pelvic packing. Angioembolization should be considered in patients that remain hemodynamically unstable. However, it should be used as an adjunct, rather than a primary means to achieve hemodynamic stability as most of the exsanguinating bleeding sources in pelvic trauma are of venous origin. Time is of the essence in these patients and should therefore be used appropriately. Hence, the hemodynamic status and physiology should be the driving force behind each decision-making step within the algorithm

    Screening and Deconfinement of Sources in Finite Temperature SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory

    Deconfinement and screening of higher-representation sources in finite-temperature SU(2)SU(2) lattice gauge theory is investigated by both analytical and numerical means. The effective Polyakov-line action at strong coupling is simulated by an efficient cluster-updating Monte Carlo algorithm for the case of d ⁣= ⁣4d\!=\!4 dimensions. The results compare very favourably with an improved mean-field solution. The limit d ⁣ ⁣d\!\to\!\infty of the SU(2)SU(2) theory is shown to be highly singular as far as critical behaviour is concerned. In that limit the leading amplitudes of higher representation Polyakov lines vanish at strong coupling, and subleading exponents become dominant.
