Critical densities for the Skyrme type effective interactions

    Get PDF
We use the stability conditions of the Landau parameters for the symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter to calculate the critical densities for the Skyrme type effective nucleon-nucleon interactions. We find that the critical density can be maximized by adjusting appropriately the values of the enhancement factor κ\kappa associated with isovector giant dipole resonance, the quantity LL which is directly related to the slope of the symmetry energy and the Landau parameter G0G_0^\prime. However, restricting κ\kappa, LL and G0G_0^\prime to vary within acceptable limits reduces the maximum value for the critical density ρ~cr\tilde\rho_{cr} by 25\sim 25%. We also show that among the various quantities characterizing the symmetric nuclear matter, ρ~cr\tilde\rho_{cr} depends strongly on the isoscalar effective mass m/mm^*/m and surface energy coefficient EsE_s. For realistic values of m/mm^*/m and EsE_s we get ρ~cr=2ρ0\tilde\rho_{cr} = 2\rho_0 to 3ρ0 3\rho_0 (ρ0=0.16\rho_0 = 0.16fm3^{-3}).Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. Physicsl Review C (in press

A note on a hypergeometric transformation formula due to Slater with an application

In this note we state (with minor corrections) and give an alternative proof of a very general hypergeometric transformation formula due to Slater. As an application, we obtain a new hypergeometric transformation formula for a 5F4(−1) series with one pair of parameters differing by unity expressed as a linear combination of two 3F2(1) series

Cold Compressed Baryonic Matter with Hidden Local Symmetry and Holography

I describe a novel phase structure of cold dense baryonic matter predicted in a hidden local symmetry approach anchored on gauge theory and in a holographic dual approach based on the Sakai-Sugimoto model of string theory. This new phase is populated with baryons with half-instanton quantum number in the gravity sector which is dual to half-skyrmion in gauge sector in which chiral symmetry is restored while light-quark hadrons are in the color-confined phase. It is suggested that such a phase that aries at a density above that of normal nuclear matter and below or at the chiral restoration point can have a drastic influence on the properties of hadrons at high density, in particular on short-distance interactions between nucleons, e.g., multi-body forces at short distance and hadrons -- in particular kaons -- propagating in a dense medium. Potentially important consequences on the structure of compact stars will be predicted.Comment: 15 pages, to appear in proceedings of "Strong Coupling Gauge Theories in LHC Era (SCGT09)," Nagoya, Japa

Heating and Turbulence Driving by Galaxy Motions in Galaxy Clusters

Using three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations, we investigate heating and turbulence driving in an intracluster medium (ICM) by orbital motions of galaxies in a galaxy cluster. We consider Ng member galaxies on isothermal and isotropic orbits through an ICM typical of rich clusters. An introduction of the galaxies immediately produces gravitational wakes, providing perturbations that can potentially grow via resonant interaction with the background gas. When Ng^{1/2}Mg_11 < 100, where Mg_11 is each galaxy mass in units of 10^{11} Msun, the perturbations are in the linear regime and the resonant excitation of gravity waves is efficient to generate kinetic energy in the ICM, resulting in the velocity dispersion sigma_v ~ 2.2 Ng^{1/2}Mg_11 km/s. When Ng^{1/2}Mg_11 > 100, on the other hand, nonlinear fluctuations of the background ICM destroy galaxy wakes and thus render resonant excitation weak or absent. In this case, the kinetic energy saturates at the level corresponding to sigma_v ~ 220 km/s. The angle-averaged velocity power spectra of turbulence driven in our models have slopes in the range of -3.7 to -4.3. With the nonlinear saturation of resonant excitation, none of the cooling models considered are able to halt cooling catastrophe, suggesting that the galaxy motions alone are unlikely to solve the cooling flow problem.Comment: 12 pages including 3 figures, To appear in ApJ

    Charged Black Cosmic String

    Get PDF
Global U(1) strings with cylindrical symmetry are studied in anti-de Sitter spacetime. According as the magnitude of negative cosmological constant, they form regular global cosmic strings, extremal black cosmic strings and charged black cosmic strings, but no curvature singularity is involved. The relationship between the topological charge of a neutral global string and the black hole charge is clarified by duality transformation. Physical relevance as straight string is briefly discussed.Comment: ll pages, LaTe
