    Effect of forename string on author name disambiguation

    In author name disambiguation, author forenames are used to decide which name instances are disambiguated together and how much they are likely to refer to the same author. Despite such a crucial role of forenames, their effect on the performance of heuristic (string matching) and algorithmic disambiguation is not well understood. This study assesses the contributions of forenames in author name disambiguation using multiple labeled data sets under varying ratios and lengths of full forenames, reflecting real‐world scenarios in which an author is represented by forename variants (synonym) and some authors share the same forenames (homonym). The results show that increasing the ratios of full forenames substantially improves both heuristic and machine‐learning‐based disambiguation. Performance gains by algorithmic disambiguation are pronounced when many forenames are initialized or homonyms are prevalent. As the ratios of full forenames increase, however, they become marginal compared to those by string matching. Using a small portion of forename strings does not reduce much the performances of both heuristic and algorithmic disambiguation methods compared to using full‐length strings. Individual differences in the preferred times of waking, activity and rest (sleep) are known as chronotype or diurnal preference; which arise due to differences in circadian rhythmicity due to the fact that rhythms are not exactly 24-hours. Various polymorphisms of certain genes involved in circadian rhythm generation have been associated with extreme chronotype. Of interest to this study is the PER3 gene as it has a variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) polymorphism in the coding region, which is repeated either four of five times, encoding proteins of different lengths

    An Exploratory Study for Understanding Reasons of (Not-)Using Internet of Things

    The potential of things or objects generating and processing data about day-to-day activities of its users has given a new level of popularity to Internet of Things (IoT) among its consumers. Even though the popularity has seen a steady increase, the use of IoT devices has been slow and abandonment rapid. To build on the existing literature and advance our understanding of the sociological processes of use and non-use of these devices, this paper presents results from the survey of 489 IoT users. Our qualitative analysis of open ended questions revealed that the motives for use include multi-functionality of devices that provide control over daily activities, social competitive edge, economic advantage, and habit. The justifications for limiting or stopping the use include privacy concerns, information overload and inaccuracy, demotivation because of the reminders about pending or failed goals, no excitement after satisfying initial curiosity, and maintenance becoming unmanageable in terms of effort, time, and money

    Independent electrical tuning of separated quantum dots in coupled photonic crystal cavities

    Systems of photonic crystal cavities coupled to quantum dots are a promising architecture for quantum networking and quantum simulators. The ability to independently tune the frequencies of laterally separated quantum dots is a crucial component of such a scheme. Here, we demonstrate independent tuning of laterally separated quantum dots in photonic crystal cavities coupled by in-plane waveguides by implanting lines of protons which serve to electrically isolate different sections of a diode structure.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

    Rag GTPases are cardioprotective by regulating lysosomal function.

    The Rag family proteins are Ras-like small GTPases that have a critical role in amino-acid-stimulated mTORC1 activation by recruiting mTORC1 to lysosome. Despite progress in the mechanistic understanding of Rag GTPases in mTORC1 activation, little is known about the physiological function of Rag GTPases in vivo. Here we show that loss of RagA and RagB (RagA/B) in cardiomyocytes results in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and phenocopies lysosomal storage diseases, although mTORC1 activity is not substantially impaired in vivo. We demonstrate that despite upregulation of lysosomal protein expression by constitutive activation of the transcription factor EB (TFEB) in RagA/B knockout mouse embryonic fibroblasts, lysosomal acidification is compromised owing to decreased v-ATPase level in the lysosome fraction. Our study uncovers RagA/B GTPases as key regulators of lysosomal function and cardiac protection

    H1 photonic crystal cavitites for hybrid quantum information protocols

    Hybrid quantum information protocols are based on local qubits, such as trapped atoms, NV centers, and quantum dots, coupled to photons. The coupling is achieved through optical cavities. Here we demonstrate far-field optimized H1 photonic crystal membrane cavities combined with an additional back reflection mirror below the membrane that meet the optical requirements for implementing hybrid quantum information protocols. Using numerical optimization we find that 80% of the light can be radiated within an objective numerical aperture of 0.8, and the coupling to a single-mode fiber can be as high as 92%. We experimentally prove the unique external mode matching properties by resonant reflection spectroscopy with a cavity mode visibility above 50%.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure

    Fighting the tightrope: language ideologies, balancing acts, and figures of elusive modernity in South Korea

    There has been a growing interest in how local linguistic practices are being shaped by the global force of neoliberalism. Though it is a powerful paradigm, I hope to illuminate through this dissertation how neoliberalism alone is insufficient to be held accountable for the changing meanings of English in Korea, and how invoking the framework of language ideologies allows for a more complete analysis of language change. To this end, I explore the interconnectivity of neoliberalism, displays of consumption, and language change with a focus on gender. By tracing the uptake of a particular phoneme, I examine how speakers use phonological accuracy as a tool to construct new indexical orders by appropriating chronotopic symbols of the past, reinscribing gendered narratives of Korean womanhood as figures of successful or failed modernity. These associations provide a window into the reconfiguration of language ideologies surrounding English, as well as how a new global neoliberal order is melted into the pedestrian lives of locals
