A Survey on Compiler Autotuning using Machine Learning

Since the mid-1990s, researchers have been trying to use machine-learning based approaches to solve a number of different compiler optimization problems. These techniques primarily enhance the quality of the obtained results and, more importantly, make it feasible to tackle two main compiler optimization problems: optimization selection (choosing which optimizations to apply) and phase-ordering (choosing the order of applying optimizations). The compiler optimization space continues to grow due to the advancement of applications, increasing number of compiler optimizations, and new target architectures. Generic optimization passes in compilers cannot fully leverage newly introduced optimizations and, therefore, cannot keep up with the pace of increasing options. This survey summarizes and classifies the recent advances in using machine learning for the compiler optimization field, particularly on the two major problems of (1) selecting the best optimizations and (2) the phase-ordering of optimizations. 4-H Youth Worker Characteristics: Comparisons with Workers from Other Youth-Serving Organizations

Participation in 4-H has been linked to a variety of positive youth outcomes. Yet little is known about the youth workers responsible for the implementation of these programs. Using survey data collected from a national sample, the study reported here examined the characteristics of 4-H workers and youth workers from other organizations. Analyses revealed both the strengths of 4-H workers and the challenges they may face in expanding and promoting programming. Recommendations are offered to ensure the continued development and success of 4-H programs

High Precision Measurements Lend No Supporting Evidence of Previously Reported Large Verdet Constants for Olive Oil

Motivated by a previous report of surprisingly large Verdet constant measurements for olive oil at 633 nm and 650 nm (Shakir, et. al., 2013), and the practical utility of materials possessing such large values, we considered it worthwhile to validate those results. In this work, high precision Faraday rotation measurements were performed utilizing ac magnetic fields, phase sensitive detection, and a collection of diode lasers. Specifically, we measured the dispersion of the Verdet constant for a single brand of olive oil from 410 nm to 675 nm. In addition, we determined the Verdet constant for eight different samples of olive oil at 654 nm, very near the wavelength where the “anomalous” results, i.e. large Verdet constants, were reported. Our measurements of the Faraday rotations, and hence the determination of the respective Verdet constants, call into question those previously reported measurements. Generally, our results suggest that their experimental technique most likely led to inaccurate results for all five of the Verdet constant values they reported

Targeted deletion of Fgf9 in tendon disrupts mineralization of the developing enthesis

The enthesis is a transitional tissue between tendon and bone that matures postnatally. The development and maturation of the enthesis involve cellular processes likened to an arrested growth plate. In this study, we explored the role of fibroblast growth factor 9 (Fgf9), a known regulator of chondrogenesis and vascularization during bone development, on the structure and function of the postnatal enthesis. First, we confirmed spatial expression of Fgf9 in the tendon and enthesis using in situ hybridization. We then used Cre-lox recombinase to conditionally knockout Fgf9 in mouse tendon and enthesis (Scx-Cre) and characterized enthesis morphology as well as mechanical properties in Fgf

Governance in Large Nonprofit Health Systems: Current Profile and Emerging Patterns

From the foreword: Nonprofit healthcare organizations are not exempt from good governance. In fact, more today than ever, the hospitals and health care systems of this country must have the discipline and commitment to organize their governance structures and practices to provide forward-thinking leadership and stand up to scrutiny from any type of evaluation and review. As we move from “sick care” organizations to “health care” organizations with accountability for the health of the population of our communities from birth to end-of-life, the role of governance becomes even more critical. Fourteen of the largest and most notable health care systems in this country have been included in a research study to examine their governance structures and practices in relation to nine benchmarks. The CEOs and board members of these organizations were interviewed about their structures, processes and cultures, and then compared to national best practices. The study also included close review of pertinent system documents. This report is a must read for hospital and health care system CEOs and boards. It provides evidence-based outcomes that will assist an organization in advancing its governance practices. This study outlines critical success factors for governance structure and performance. It answers many questions that boards may be struggling with today and provides advancing actions. The research methodology is thorough and reliable with specific outcomes that provide high-performance opportunities. Childhood ADHD and Risk for Substance Dependence in Adulthood: A Longitudinal, Population-Based Study

Background: Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are known to be at significantly greater risk for the development of substance use disorders (SUD) compared to peers. Impulsivity, which could lead to higher levels of drug use, is a known symptom of ADHD and likely accounts, in part, for this relationship. Other factors, such as a biologically increased susceptibility to substance dependence (addiction), may also play a role. Objective: This report further examines the relationships between childhood ADHD, adolescent- onset SUD, and substance abuse and substance dependence in adulthood. Method Individuals with childhood ADHD and non-ADHD controls from the same population-based birth cohort were invited to participate in a prospective outcome study. Participants completed a structured neuropsychiatric interview with modules for SUD and a psychosocial questionnaire. Information on adolescent SUD was obtained retrospectively, in a previous study, from medical and school records. Associations were summarized using odds ratios (OR) and 95% CIs estimated from logistic regression models adjusted for age and gender. Results: A total of 232 ADHD cases and 335 non-ADHD controls participated (mean age, 27.0 and 28.6 years, respectively). ADHD cases were more likely than controls to have a SUD diagnosed in adolescence and were more likely to have alcohol (adjusted OR 14.38, 95% CI 1.49–138.88) and drug (adjusted OR 3.48, 95% CI 1.38–8.79) dependence in adulthood. The subgroup of participating ADHD cases who did not have SUD during adolescence were no more likely than controls to develop new onset alcohol dependence as adults, although they were significantly more likely to develop new onset drug dependence. Conclusions: Our study found preliminary evidence that adults with childhood ADHD are more susceptible than peers to developing drug dependence, a disorder associated with neurological changes in the brain. Improving the Ghanaian Safe Motherhood Programme

Prior to the Ghana Ministry of Health scaling up the country’s Safe Motherhood program, they requested support from the Population Council’s USAID-funded Frontiers in Reproductive Health program to undertake an operations research study to evaluate and compare the cost-effectiveness of two training approaches and other performance improvement interventions. The study measured and compared changes in provider knowledge and skills and the costs of implementing a three-week residential vs. self-paced learning (SPL) approach. The SPL approach costs more per trainer than the traditional residential approach, both in financial costs alone and when opportunity costs are added, however, a cost-effectiveness analysis showed that for improving provider knowledge, the SPL approach was clearly more cost-effective. At a dissemination meeting, stakeholders agreed that the SPL and residential approaches are not mutually exclusive—both approaches have their strengths and weaknesses. Training for safe motherhood should be developed based on the strengths of the two approaches
