    Variable and reversible quantum structures on a single carbon nanotube

    The band gap of a semiconducting single wall carbon nanotube decreases and eventually vanishes leading to metalization as a result of increasing radial deformation. This sets in a band offset between the undeformed and deformed regions of a single nanotube. Based on the superlattice calculations, we show that these features can be exploited to realize various quantum well structures on a single nanotube with variable and reversible electronic properties.     Contribution of Organ Vasculature in Rat Renal Analysis for Ochratoxin A: Relevance to Toxicology of Nephrotoxins

    Assumptions surrounding the kidney as a target for accumulation of ochratoxin A (OTA) are addressed because the contribution of the toxin in blood seems invariably to have been ignored. Adult rats were maintained for several weeks on toxin-contaminated feed. Using standard perfusion techniques, animals were anaesthetised, a blood sample was taken, one kidney was ligated, and the other kidney perfused with physiological saline in situ under normal blood pressure. Comparative analysis of OTA in pairs of kidneys showed marked reduction in the perfused organ in the range 37%–98% (mean 75%), demonstrating the general efficiency of perfusion supported also by histology, and implying a major role of blood in the total OTA content of kidney. Translation of OTA values in plasma to whole blood, and its predicted contribution as a 25% vascular compartment in kidney gave values similar to those in non-perfused kidneys. Thus, apparent ‘accumulation’ of OTA in kidney is due to binding to plasma proteins and long half-life in plasma. Attention should be re-focused on whole animal pharmacokinetics during chronic OTA exposure. Similar principles may be applied to DNA-OTA adducts which are now recognised as occurring in blood; application could also extend to other nephrotoxins such as aristolochic acid. Thus, at least, quantitative reassessment in urological tissues seems necessary in attributing adducts specifically as markers of potentially-tumourigenic exposure

    Miniature photonic-crystal hydrophone optimized for ocean acoustics

    This work reports on an optical hydrophone that is insensitive to hydrostatic pressure, yet capable of measuring acoustic pressures as low as the background noise in the ocean in a frequency range of 1 Hz to 100 kHz. The miniature hydrophone consists of a Fabry-Perot interferometer made of a photonic-crystal reflector interrogated with a single-mode fiber, and is compatible with existing fiber-optic technologies. Three sensors with different acoustic power ranges placed within a sub-wavelength sized hydrophone head allow a high dynamic range in the excess of 160 dB with a low harmonic distortion of better than -30 dB. A method for suppressing cross coupling between sensors in the same hydrophone head is also proposed. A prototype was fabricated, assembled, and tested. The sensitivity was measured from 100 Hz to 100 kHz, demonstrating a minimum detectable pressure down to 12 {\mu}Pa (1-Hz noise bandwidth), a flatband wider than 10 kHz, and very low distortion

    Effect of Taurodehydrocholic Acid on the Hepatic Expression of Abcg5 and Abcg8 and Biliary Parameters in the Fistula Rat

    Introduction: Biliary secretion of phospholipids and cholesterol is mainly dependent on bile-salt secretion although the exact mechanisms involved are not clearly defined. Aims: This study was to investigate the effect of oral administration of turodehydrocholic acid (TDHC) on cholesterol metabolism. Materials and Methods: TDHC was administered orally at a concentration of 10mM twice a day to rats for 7 days in order to mimic the in vivo situation in gallstone patients on bile salt therapy. Bile duct was cannulated and bile was collected for 30 mins on ice and subjected to analysis for total cholesterol, total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT). Liver samples were subjected to real time PCR and the gene expression of the adenosing triphosphate-binding cassette transporter heterodimer Abcg5/g8 was determined. Results: TDHC significantly increased the expression of Abcg5 whilst the level of Abcg8 was significantly decreased. No changes in biliary cholesterol, ALP and GGT were observed, however the total bilirubin was significantly increased in the bile of TDHC administered rats. Conclusions: Increased expressıon of Abcg5 may be one mechanism by which TDHC stimulates the secretion of biliary cholesterol

    Experimental evidence of guided resonances in photonic crystals with aperiodically-ordered supercells

    We report on the first experimental evidence of guided resonances (GRs) in photonic crystal slabs based on aperiodically-ordered supercells. Using the Ammann-Beenker (quasiperiodic, 8-fold symmetric) tiling geometry, we present our study on the fabrication, experimental characterization, and full-wave numerical simulation of two representative structures (with different filling parameters) operating at near-infrared wavelengths (1300-1600 nm). Our results show a fairly good agreement between measurements and numerical predictions, and pave the way for the development of new strategies (based, e.g., on the lattice symmetry breaking) for GR engineering.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures (minor revisions

    Guidewire Breakage during Neurointerventional Procedures: a Report of Two Cases

    We report on two cases of microguidewire breakage that occurred during endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms. The microguidewire can be broken when a part of the wire is stuck due to vascular tortuosity, and, subsequently, application of excessive rotational movement. The mechanical and physical properties of a microguidewire are also important factors in microguidewire breakage. We also suggest technical tips for avoidance of this problem

    Variability Analyses of Alfalfa-Reference to Grass-Reference Evapotranspiration Ratios in Growing and Dormant Seasons

    Alfalfa-reference evapotranspiration (ETr) values sometimes need to be converted to grass-reference ET (ETo), or vice versa, to enable crop coefficients developed for one reference surface to be used with the other. However, guidelines to make these conversions are lacking. The objectives of this study were to: (1) develop ETr to ETo ratios (Kr values) for different climatic regions for the growing season and nongrowing (dormant) seasons; and (2) determine the seasonal behavior of Kr values between the locations and in the same location for different seasons. Monthly average Kr values from daily values were developed for Bushland, (Tex.), Clay Center, (Neb.), Davis, (Calif.), Gainesville, (Fla.), Phoenix (Ariz.), and Rockport, (Mo.) for the calendar year and for the growing season (May– September). ETr and ETo values that were used to determine Kr values were calculated by several methods. Methods included the standardized American Society of Civil Engineers Penman–Monteith (ASCE-PM), Food and Agriculture Organization Paper 56 (FAO56) equation (68), 1972 and 1982 Kimberly-Penman, 1963 Jensen-Haise, and the High Plains Regional Climate Center (HPRCC) Penman. The Kr values determined by the same and different methods exhibited substantial variations among locations. For example, the Kr values developed with the ASCE-PM method in July were 1.38, 1.27, 1.32, 1.11, 1.28, and 1.19, for Bushland, Clay Center, Davis, Gainesville, Phoenix, and Rockport, respectively. The variability in the Kr values among locations justifies the need for developing local Kr values because the values did not appear to be transferable among locations. In general, variations in Kr values were less for the growing season than for the calendar year. Average standard deviation between years was maximum 0.13 for the calendar year and maximum 0.10 for the growing season. The ASCE-PM Kr values had less variability among locations than those obtained with other methods. The FAO56 procedure Kr values had higher variability among locations, especially for areas with low relative humidity and high wind speed. The 1972 Kim-Pen method resulted in the closest Kr values compared with the ASCE-PM method at all locations. Some of the methods, including the ASCE-PM, produced potentially unrealistically high Kr values (e.g., 1.78, 1.80) during the nongrowing season, which could be due to instabilities and uncertainties that exist when estimating ETr and ETo in dormant season since the hypothetical reference conditions are usually not met during this period in most locations. Because simultaneous and direct measurements of the ETr and ETo values rarely exist, it appears that the approach of ETr to ETo ratios calculated with the ASCE-PM method is currently the best approach available to derive Kr values for locations where these measurements are not available. The Kr values developed in this study can be useful for making conversions from ETr to ETo, or vice versa, to enable using crop coefficients developed for one reference surface with the other to determine actual crop water use for locations, with similar climatic characteristics of this study, when locally measured Kr values are not available

    3D printed Artificial Cornea for Corneal Stromal Transplantation

    The aim of this study is to understand the optical, biocompatible, and mechanical properties of chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) based corneal stroma constructs using 3D printing process. Corneal stroma is tested for biocompatibility with human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hASCs). Physico-chemical and chemical characterization of the construct was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Optical transmittance was analyzed using UV-Spectrophotometer. Results showed fabricated constructs have required shape and size. SEM images showed construct has thickness of 400 µm. The FTIR spectra demonstrated the presence of various predicted peaks. The swelling and degradation studies of 13%(wt)PVA and 13%(wt)PVA/(1, 3, 5)%(wt)CS showed to have high swelling ratios of 7 days and degradation times of 30 days, respectively. The light transmittance values of the fabricated cornea constructs decreased with CS addition slightly. Tensile strength values decreased with increasing CS ratio, but we found to support intraocular pressure (IOP) which ranges from 12 to 22 mm-Hg. Preliminary biostability studies showed that composite constructs were compatible with hASCs even after 30 days’ of degradation, showing potential for these cells to be differentiated to stroma layer in future. This study has implications for the rapid and custom fabrication of various cornea constructs for clinical applications
