The article traces the construction of the legend surrounding the mystery of Francis of Assisi's stigmata, which are said to have appeared two years before his death. Central to this analysis, which is underpinned by sign and media theory, is the Legenda maior, a description of the life of Francis, written by Bonaventura four decades later on the basis of older testimonies and legends. The focus is on those strategies which allow the change of events between mediation and immediacy, in that they, on the one hand, are dominated by a concrete, spacial framework and, on the other, by moments of that which is unverfügba

Ordnung der Fremde : Brasilien und die theoretische Neugierde im 16. Jahrhundert

Although the first travels to America were largely motivated by material interests, the news about native peoples published in Europe by the travellers little by little influenced a conception of the world, which was still dominated by medieval traditions. In general, the experience of the alien was still described in the forms of the own, but gradually the empirical knowledge began to structure a new discourse. The author analyses the earliest books on voyages to Brazil in the middle of the l6th century by Hans Staden, Jean de Léry and André Thevet. He observes how they develop discursive orders of their own, trying to deal with strange phenomena. They mark a first step for Western thought in the process of creating a space for the alien, who really exists – in this case on the coast of Brazil.Embora as primeiras viagens para a América fossem motivadas sobretudo por interesses materiais, as noticias sobre os povos indígenas, publicadas na Europa pelos viajantes, pouco a pouco influenciaram a concepção de mundo, dominado até então por tradições medievais. Em geral, a esperiência do outro se descrevia ainda em formas do conhecido, mas paulatinamente o conhecimento empírico começou a estruturar um novo discurso. O autor analisa os primeiros livros sobre viagens para o Brasil em meados do século XVl, Hans Staden, Jean de Léry e André Thevet. Ele constara que os viajantes desenvolvem estruturas discursivas próprias, pam lidar com os fenômenos estranhos. Os relatos marcam no pensamento ocidental um primeiro passo no processo da criação de um espaço para o outro, que existe na realidade – neste caso no litoral brasileiro

Ästhetik und Pragmatik der Zeit im 16. Jahrhundert

Christian Kiening behandelt mit seinem Beitrag zu „Ästhetik und Pragmatik der Zeit im 16. Jahrhundert“ zwei zentrale Tendenzen im Umgang mit der Zeit in der Geistes-, Kultur- und Literaturgeschichte im 16. Jahrhundert: die Tendenz, sich zunehmend mit der Zeit als einem ästhetischen Phänomen zu beschäftigen, und die Tendenz, Fragen der Zeitlichkeit auf Dimensionen des Messbaren, des Alltäglichen und der Lebenszeit zu beziehen. Am Beispiel unterschiedlicher visueller und schriftlicher Zeugnisse wird nach dem Zusammenhang dieser Tendenzen gefragt. Im Hinblick auf das Verhältnis von Erscheinungsform und Reflexionsform sowie die praxeologische Dimension des Ästhetischen kommen dabei auch programmatische Aspekte des SFB 1391 zur Sprache

Narciso e Eco. Medialidade do amor e da morte

Losso (UFRJ)Revisão técnica: Luciana Villas Bôas (UFRJ)Este artigo questiona a leitura, que se estabeleceu ao longo da Modernidade, segundo a qual a famosa história de Ovídio é tomada como exemplo de auto-conhecimento, auto-referência e auto-destruição, situando-a no âmbito de discussões antigas sobre medialidade e comunicação, assim como do caráter ilusório dos sons e das imagens. Compreende-se que a história, que oscila entre natureza e arte, mito e reflexão, tematiza esta oscilação no âmbito das formas de percepção. Na medida em que estas formas se tornam transparentes, prestam-se à determinação das condições de discursos e demonstrações, textos, imagens e fenômenos.Abstract: Der Aufsatz liest die berühmte Geschichte Ovids nicht sosehr, wie die Moderne es lange getan hat, als eine von Selbsterkenntnis, Selbstbezogenheit und Selbstverfallenheit, sondern stellt sie in den Kontext antiker Diskussionen von Medialität und Kommunikation, von Täuschungen der T¶ne und Bilder. Begriffen wird die Geschichte als eine zwischen Natur und Kunst, Mythos und Reflexion oszillierende, die eben dieses Oszillieren in Formen der Wahrnehmung übersetzt -- Formen, die ihrerseits transparent sind für die Verhandlung der Bedingungen von Reden und Zeigen, Text und Bild, Figur und Erscheinung.Schlüsselbegriffe: Liebestod; Medialität; Wahrnehmung; Reflexion; Echo
