Entropic phase separation of linked beads
We study theoretically a model system of a transient network of microemulsion
droplets connected by telechelic polymers and explain recent experimental
findings. Despite the absence of any specific interactions between either the
droplets or polymer chains, we predict that as the number of polymers per drop
is increased, the system undergoes a first order phase separation into a dense,
highly connected phase, in equilibrium with dilute droplets, decorated by
polymer loops. The phase transition is purely entropic and is driven by the
interplay between the translational entropy of the drops and the
configurational entropy of the polymer connections between them. Because it is
dominated by entropic effects, the phase separation mechanism of the system is
extremely robust and does not depend on the particlular physical realization of
the network. The discussed model applies as well to other polymer linked
particle aggregates, such as nano-particles connected with short DNA linkers
Ultrafast x‐ray sources@f|
Time‐resolved spectroscopy (with a 2 psec temporal resolution) of plasmas produced by the interaction between solid targets and a high contrast subpicosecond table top terawatt (T3) laser at 1016 W/cm2, is used to study the basic processes which control the x‐ray pulse duration. Short x‐ray pulses have been obtained by spectral selection or by plasma gradient scalelength control. Time‐dependent calculations of the atomic physics [Phys. Fluids B 4, 2007, 1992] coupled to a Fokker–Planck code [Phys. Rev. Lett. 53, 1461, 1984] indicate that it is essential to take into account the non‐Maxwellian character of the electron distribution for a quantitative analysis of the experimental results.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/70417/2/PFBPEI-5-7-2676-1.pd
Visual Similarity Perception of Directed Acyclic Graphs: A Study on Influencing Factors
While visual comparison of directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) is commonly
encountered in various disciplines (e.g., finance, biology), knowledge about
humans' perception of graph similarity is currently quite limited. By graph
similarity perception we mean how humans perceive commonalities and differences
in graphs and herewith come to a similarity judgment. As a step toward filling
this gap the study reported in this paper strives to identify factors which
influence the similarity perception of DAGs. In particular, we conducted a
card-sorting study employing a qualitative and quantitative analysis approach
to identify 1) groups of DAGs that are perceived as similar by the participants
and 2) the reasons behind their choice of groups. Our results suggest that
similarity is mainly influenced by the number of levels, the number of nodes on
a level, and the overall shape of the graph.Comment: Graph Drawing 2017 - arXiv Version; Keywords: Graphs, Perception,

Femtosecond Near Edge X-ray Absorption Measurement of the VO2Phase Transition
We measure the insulator-to-metal transition in VO2 using femtosecond Near-Edge X-ray Absorption. Sliced pulses of synchrotron radiation are used to detect the photo-induced dynamics at the 516-eV Vanadium L-3 edge
Complex lithium ion dynamics in simulated LiPO3 glass studied by means of multi-time correlation functions
Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the lithium jumps in
LiPO3 glass. In particular, we calculate higher-order correlation functions
that probe the positions of single lithium ions at several times. Three-time
correlation functions show that the non-exponential relaxation of the lithium
ions results from both correlated back-and-forth jumps and the existence of
dynamical heterogeneities, i.e., the presence of a broad distribution of jump
rates. A quantitative analysis yields that the contribution of the dynamical
heterogeneities to the non-exponential depopulation of the lithium sites
increases upon cooling. Further, correlated back-and-forth jumps between
neighboring sites are observed for the fast ions of the distribution, but not
for the slow ions and, hence, the back-jump probability depends on the
dynamical state. Four-time correlation functions indicate that an exchange
between fast and slow ions takes place on the timescale of the jumps
themselves, i.e., the dynamical heterogeneities are short-lived. Hence, sites
featuring fast and slow lithium dynamics, respectively, are intimately mixed.
In addition, a backward correlation beyond the first neighbor shell for highly
mobile ions and the presence of long-range dynamical heterogeneities suggest
that fast ion migration occurs along preferential pathways in the glassy
matrix. In the melt, we find no evidence for correlated back-and-forth motions
and dynamical heterogeneities on the length scale of the next-neighbor
distance.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figure
Performance of Glass Resistive Plate Chambers for a high granularity semi-digital calorimeter
A new design of highly granular hadronic calorimeter using Glass Resistive
Plate Chambers (GRPCs) with embedded electronics has been proposed for the
future International Linear Collider (ILC) experiments. It features a 2-bit
threshold semi-digital read-out. Several GRPC prototypes with their electronics
have been successfully built and tested in pion beams. The design of these
detectors is presented along with the test results on efficiency, pad
multiplicity, stability and reproducibility.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figure
