Optical Polarization of 52 Radio-Loud QSOs and BL Lac Objects
Polarization measurements are presented for 52 radio-loud QSOs and BL Lac
objects. For 9 highly polarized (p >3%) AGN, these are the first published
polarization measurements. Of these 9, 7 are highly-polarized QSOs (HPQs), one
is a BL Lac object and another is a likely BL Lac object. Polarization
variability is confirmed for some of these new and previously known
highly-polarized AGN. While 6 of the HPQs have flat radio spectra are almost
certainly blazars, PKS 1452-217 is probably a new member of the rare class of
radio-loud QSOs that show high polarization by scattering, and is therefore
important for testing orientation Unified Schemes. In competition for the
highest redshift HPQ are the well-observed QSO PKS 0438-43 at z = 2.85, with
maximum p = 4.7%, and PKS 0046-315 at z = 2.72, for which we find p = 13%.Comment: 6 pages. Astronomical Journal, in pres
Visualizing and quantitating the spatiotemporal regulation of Ras/ERK signaling by dual-specificity mitogen-activated protein phosphatases (MKPs)
The spatiotemporal regulation of the Ras/ERK pathway is critical in determining the physiological and pathophysiological outcome of signaling. Dual-specificity mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphatases (DUSPs or MKPs) are key regulators of pathway activity and may also localize ERK to distinct subcellular locations. Here we present methods largely based on the use of high content microscopy to both visualize and quantitate the subcellular distribution of activated (p-ERK) and total ERK in populations of mouse embryonic fibroblasts derived from mice lacking DUSP5, a nuclear ERK-specific MKP. Such methods in combination with rescue experiments using adenoviral vectors encoding wild-type and mutant forms of DUSP5 have allowed us to visualize specific defects in ERK regulation in these cells thus confirming the role of this phosphatase as both a nuclear regulator of ERK activity and localization.</p
Evolution of the Dust Coma in Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko Before 2009 Perihelion
Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is the main target of ESA's Rosetta mission
and will be encountered in May 2014. As the spacecraft shall be in orbit the
comet nucleus before and after release of the lander {\it Philae}, it is
necessary necessary to know the conditions in the coma. Study the dust
environment, including the dust production rate and its variations along its
preperihelion orbit. The comet was observed during its approach to the Sun on
four epochs between early-June 2008 and mid-January 2009, over a large range of
heliocentric distances that will be covered by the mission in 2014. An
anomalous enhancement of the coma dust density was measured towards the comet
nucleus. The scalelength of this enhancement increased with decreasing
heliocentric distance of the comet. This is interpreted as a result of an
unusually slow expansion of the dust coma. Assuming a spherical symmetric coma,
the average amount of dust as well as its ejection velocity have been derived.
The latter increases exponentially with decreasing heliocentric distance (\rh),
ranging from about 1 m/s at 3 AU to about 25-35 m/s at 1.4 AU. Based on these
results we describe the dust environment at those nucleocentric distances at
which the spacecraft will presumably be in orbit.

Combined BIMA and OVRO observations of comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR)
We present results from an observing campaign of the molecular content of the
coma of comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) carried out jointly with the millimeter-arrays
of the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association (BIMA) and the Owens Valley Radio
Observatory (OVRO). Using the BIMA array in autocorrelation (`single-dish')
mode, we detected weak HCN J=1-0 emission from comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) at 14
+- 4 mK km/s averaged over the 143" beam. The three days over which emission
was detected, 2000 July 21.9-24.2, immediately precede the reported full
breakup of the nucleus of this comet. During this same period, we find an upper
limit for HCN 1-0 of 144 mJy/beam km/s (203 mK km/s) in the 9"x12" synthesized
beam of combined observations of BIMA and OVRO in cross-correlation (`imaging')
mode. Together with reported values of HCN 1-0 emission in the 28" IRAM
30-meter beam, our data probe the spatial distribution of the HCN emission from
radii of 1300 to 19,000 km. Using literature results of HCN excitation in
cometary comae, we find that the relative line fluxes in the 12"x9", 28" and
143" beams are consistent with expectations for a nuclear source of HCN and
expansion of the volatile gases and evaporating icy grains following a Haser

Historic Light Curve and Long-term Optical Variation of BL Lacertae 2200+420
In this paper, historical optical(UBVRI) data and newly observed data from
the Yunnan Observatory of China(about100 years) are presented for BL Lacertae.
Maximum variations in UBVRI: 5.12, 5.31, 4.73, 2.59, and 2.54 and color indices
of U-B = -0.11 +/- 0.20, B-V= 1.0 +/- 0.11, V-R= 0.73 +/- 0.19, V-I= 1.42 +/-
0.25, R-I= 0.82 +/- 0.11, and B-I= 2.44 +/- 0.29 have been obtained from the
literature; The Jurkevich method is used to investigate the existence of
periods in the B band light curve, and a long-term period of 14 years is found.
The 0.6 and 0.88 year periods reported by Webb et al.(1988) are confirmed. In
addition, a close relation between B-I and B is found, suggesting that the

ERK1/2 inhibitors: New weapons to inhibit the RAS-regulated RAF-MEK1/2-ERK1/2 pathway
The RAS-regulated RAF-MEK1/2-ERK1/2 signalling pathway is de-regulated in a variety of cancers due to mutations in receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), negative regulators of RAS (such as NF1) and core pathway components themselves (RAS, BRAF, CRAF, MEK1 or MEK2). This has driven the development of a variety of pharmaceutical agents to inhibit RAF-MEK1/2-ERK1/2 signalling in cancer and both RAF and MEK inhibitors are now approved and used in the clinic. There is now much interest in targeting at the level of ERK1/2 for a variety of reasons. First, since the pathway is linear from RAF-to-MEK-to-ERK then ERK1/2 are validated as targets per se. Second, innate resistance to RAF or MEK inhibitors involves relief of negative feedback and pathway re-activation with all signalling going through ERK1/2, validating the use of ERK inhibitors with RAF or MEK inhibitors as an up-front combination. Third, long-term acquired resistance to RAF or MEK inhibitors involves a variety of mechanisms (KRAS or BRAF amplification, MEK mutation, etc.) which re-instate ERK activity, validating the use of ERK inhibitors to forestall acquired resistance to RAF or MEK inhibitors. The first potent highly selective ERK1/2 inhibitors have now been developed and are entering clinical trials. They have one of three discrete mechanisms of action - catalytic, "dual mechanism" or covalent - which could have profound consequences for how cells respond and adapt. In this review we describe the validation of ERK1/2 as anti-cancer drug targets, consider the mechanism of action of new ERK1/2 inhibitors and how this may impact on their efficacy, anticipate factors that will determine how tumour cells respond and adapt to ERK1/2 inhibitors and consider ERK1/2 inhibitor drug combinations
Ammonia and other parent molecules in comet 10P/Tempel 2 from Herschel/HIFI and ground-based radio observations
The Jupiter-family comet 10P/Tempel 2 was observed during its 2010 return
with the Herschel Space Observatory. We present here the observation of the (J,
K) = (1, 0)-(0, 0) transition of ammonia at 572 GHz in this comet with the
Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared (HIFI) of Herschel. We also report
on radio observations of other molecules (HCN, CH3OH, H2S and CS) obtained
during the 1999 return of the comet with the CSO telescope and the JCMT, and
during its 2010 return with the IRAM 30-m telescope. Molecular abundances
relative to water are 0.09%, 1.8%, 0.4%, and 0.08% for HCN, CH3OH, H2S, and CS,
respectively. An abundance of 0.5% for NH3 is obtained, which is similar to the
values measured in other comets. The hyperfine structure of the ammonia line is
resolved for the first time in an astronomical source. Strong anisotropy in the
outgassing is present in all observations from 1999 to 2010 and is modelled to

Exploring the feasibility of using Participatory Action Research (PAR) as a mechanism for school culture change to improve mental health
Adolescence is a key time to prevent or reduce poor mental health outcomes. Supportive school environments play an important role in this, and the concept of health-promoting schools have been supported globally. Participatory action research (PAR) combines theory, practice, action, and reflection by developing practical solutions to address concerns and issues within communities. Running four PAR groups across three secondary schools, we explored the feasibility of using the approach as a mechanism for bringing about culture change and improving mental health. We undertook interviews and focus groups with students (n = 24), school staff (n = 11), facilitators (n = 3), and parents/carers (n = 2). Findings are organised under five key headings: 1) Establishing PAR groups, and the PAR cycle; 2) PAR group impact; 3) Facilitators of PAR success; 4) Barriers to PAR success; 5) Future recommendations. This study demonstrated the feasibility of PAR as a tool to improve school culture. Students participating in PAR were engaged, passionate, and motivated to influence and transform school culture to improve mental health. Future research should aim to trial the PAR approach on a larger scale, to determine whether the barriers and facilitators of PAR success identified here are relevant and transferable to schools in other contexts, and to measure the impact of such initiatives on mental health outcomes
