Synthesis and Antibacterial Activity of 1,3,4-Oxadiazole and 1,2,4-Triazole Derivatives of Salicylic Acid and its Synthetic Intermediates
Eight compounds 2–9 have been synthesized starting from salicylic acid, two of them (7 and 9) are novel. The four final products namely: 5-(2-hydroxy phenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thione 4, 3-(2-hydroxy phenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol 6, 3-(2-hydroxy phenyl)-4-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol 8 and 3-(2-hydroxy phenyl)-1-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol 9 have been prepared using known reactions. The structures of intermediates and final products were determined by spectroscopic IR, UV, 1H-NMR & MS-methods in addition to elemental analysis. Antibacterial activities of compounds 1–6 and 8 were investigated in vitro against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the results are reported herein.KEYWORDS: 1,3,4-Oxadiazole-2-thione; 1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol; 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol; salicylic acid; antibacterial activity
Seasonal variations of sexual activity of local bucks in western Algeria
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the seasonal variation of sexual activity among bucks of local breed (Arbia) in western Algeria. The experiment was carried out using eight bucks aged between 4 and 6 years, a group of males in their pre-puberty age (4 to 6 months) and two females. Animals were kept in a building during one year and fed with a constant ration of wheat and hay with free access to water. Sexual activity was evaluated by scrotal circumference and sexual behaviour analysis. Results showed that the monthly average of scrotal circumference was high during August and September (27.58 ± 0.16 and 27.67 ± 0.17 cm, respectively) and low during April and May (25.18 ± 0.11 and 25.25 ±0.17 cm, respectively). Monthly averages of sexual behaviour followed similar evolution. When the season of the year is considered, sexual behaviour and scrotal circumference presented significant variations. The two parameters are maximal during autumn (7.96 ± 1.28 and 26.89 ± 0.55 cm, respectively) and go down during winter (6.09 ± 1.25 and 25.65 ± 0.27 cm, respectively) to reach minimal values during spring (4.89 ± 1.66 and 25.41 ± 0.37 cm, respectively) then they go up during summer. Inconclusion, bucks of local breed in western Algeria have seasonal variations of sexual activity in relation to annual photoperiod variation; short days stimulate the sexual activity whereas long days inhibit it
The spatial variability of water quality in the Mediterranean of eastern Morocco
Thirty sampling stations were surveyed each season during the period 2013-2015 in the objective to determine the water quality in the coastal areas between Saidia and Cala Iris. The CPA Analysis shows 5 groups associated following the water quality of 12 components. Only the sites close to the agglomerations bordering the lagoon of Nador and Al Hoceima show high values of BOD5, Nitrites and PO4. This deterioration of the water quality observed in some coastal sites explains in large part their low richness of the biodiversity of the algae
Melissopalynological, physicochemical and antioxidant properties of honey from West Coast of Malaysia
Stingless bees are native to tropical region and produce honey which are high in moisture content. Compared to honey from honeybees, there are limited studies on honey derived from stingless bees. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition and antioxidant activities of stingless bee honey. Fifteen types of honey were collected from six states in West Coast of Malaysia and pollen analyses were carried out. Four types of unifloral honey samples produced by stingless bees were selected to determine their physicochemical and antioxidant activities including total phenolic, total flavonoid and ascorbic acid contents. Melissopalynological study of 15 honey samples collected from different states showed presence of both unifloral and multifloral origins. Honey samples collected from Apis mellifera (honeybee) combs had lower number of total pollen compared to samples collected from Heterotrigona itama and Geniotrigona thoracica (stingless bees). Jambul Merak honey contains the highest phenolic and flavonoid contents with greatest color intensity and has the highest antioxidant potential. This study highlights the chemical composition and biological activity of honey from stingless bees which may increase its commercial value or to be utilised as potential functional food ingredient
Analysis by detached leaf assay of components of partial resistance of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) to chocolate spot caused by Botrytis fabae Sard.
Five faba bean (Vicia faba L.) genotypes with different levels of field susceptibility to chocolate spot
caused by Botrytis fabae, were analysed for the components of partial resistance in a laboratory assay on living
detached leaves. The incubation period (IP), the number of spots (NP), the lesion diameter (LD), the latency period
(LP) and the number of spores/leaflet (NS), were determined and statistically analysed. Parameters LD, LP and NS
were involved in characterising partial resistance, but IP did not appear to play a role. NS did not become a significant
factor until 20 h after inoculation. Genotype FRY167 was most resistant with the lowest LD and NS values and
the longest LP. In contrast, FRY30 had the highest level of susceptibility, with the highest LD and NS and the
shortest LP. However, the resistant control BPL710 showed a slight deviation in that it expressed a long LP which
was not significantly different from the values of the susceptible control Aguadulce. The absence of a correlation
between LP and NS in BPL710 opens a discussion on the genetic control of its resistance
