Oxidative Stress is Associated with Increased Pulmonary Artery Systolic Pressure in Humans

Oxidative stress contributes to the development of pulmonary hypertension in experimental models, but this association in humans is unknown. We investigated the relationship between pulmonary artery systolic pressure measured by echocardiography and plasma aminothiol oxidative stress markers, with the hypothesis that oxidative stress will be higher in those with pulmonary hypertension. A group of 347 patients aged 65±12 years from the Emory Cardiovascular Biobank underwent echocardiographic assessment of left ventricular ejection fraction and pulmonary artery systolic pressure. Plasma aminothiols, cysteine, its oxidized form, cystine; glutathione, and its oxidized disulphide (GSSG) were measured and the redox potentials (Eh) of cysteine/cystine and glutathione/GSSG couples were calculated. Non-normally distributed variables were log transformed (Ln). Univariate predictors of pulmonary artery systolic pressure included age (p\u3c0.001), gender (p=0.002), mitral regurgitation (p\u3c0.001), left ventricular ejection fraction (p\u3c0.001), left atrial size (p\u3c 0.001), diabetes (p=0.03), Plasma Ln cystine (β=9.53, p\u3c0.001), Ln glutathione (β =-5.4, p=0.002), and Eh glutathione (β =0.21, p=0.001). A multivariate linear regression model adjusting for all confounding variables demonstrated that Ln cystine (β=6.56, p=0.007), mitral regurgitation (β= 4.52, P\u3c0.001), statin use (β =-3.39, p=0.03), left ventricular ejection fraction (β=-0.26, p=0.003), and age (β=0.17, p=0.003) were independent predictors of pulmonary artery systolic pressure. For each 1% increase in plasma cystine, pulmonary artery systolic pressure increased by 16%. This association persisted in the subgroup with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (≥50%) and no significant mitral regurgitation. Whether treatment of oxidative stress will improve pulmonary hypertension requires further study

In this paper,we study the suitability of a symbolic model of syllogistic reasoning and direct inference principle with the representation and the management of knowledge based on statistical information and evaluated in a qualitative way.Our ap-proach is founded mainly on a symbolic finite M-valued logic,in which the graduation scale of M symbolic quantifiers is translated in terms of truth degrees. We propose an intuitive presentation of some basic notions of this model. We use its main properties to solve some classical problems expressed in the natural language. We show that the obtained deductions are in a good accordance with those resulting from common sense reasoning.

A Statistical Probability Theory for a Symbolic Management of Quantified Assertions

In this paper we present a new approach to a symbolic treatment of quantified statements having the following form "Q A's are B's", knowing that A and B are labels denoting sets, and Q is a linguistic quantifier interpreted as a proportion evaluated in a qualitative way. Our model can be viewed as a symbolic generalization of statistical conditional probability notions as well as a symbolic generalization of the classical probabilistic operators. Our approach is founded on a symbolic finite M-valued logic in which the graduation scale of M symbolic quantifiers is translated in terms of truth degrees. Moreover, we propose symbolic inference rules allowing us to manage quantified statements

A Case of Acute Myocarditis From Campylobacter Jejuni Enterocolitis

    No full text
Dear Editor, Campylobacter Jejuni (C. Jejuni) is the most common cause of infectious enterocolitis in the developed world, with an annual incidence as high as 1 in 1000 in the developed world and about 2.5 million cases per year in the United States with male gender predominance. Campylobacter-associated myocarditis (CAM) is a very rare and potentially life-threatening complication of C. Jejuni enterocolitis (CEC). The majority of cases include a subtle history of abdominal pain and diarrhea that progressively worsens. Chest pain and shortness of breath follow in most cases of myocarditis. We present a case of CAM mimicking acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and treated successfully with antibiotic and supportive care. We hope to increase awareness of this rare, but potentially fatal complication

Relationships Between Atrial Flutter and Fibrillation: The Border Zone

    No full text
: Atrial flutter and fibrillation have been inextricably linked in the study of electrophysiology. With astute clinical observation, advanced diagnostic equipment in the Electrophysiology Laboratory, and thoughtful study of animal models, the mechanism and inter-relationship between the 2 conditions have been elucidated and will be reviewed in this article. Though diagnosis and management of these conditions have many similarities, the mechanisms by which they develop and persist are quite unique

In this paper we present a newapproach to a symbolic treatment ofquan-tified statements having the following form "Q A's are 5's", knowing that A and B are labels denoting sets, and Q is a linguistic quantifier interpreted as a proportion evaluated in a qualitative way. Our model can be viewed as a symbolic generalization of statistical conditional probability notions as well as a symbolic generalization of the classical probabilistic operators. Our approach is founded on a symbolic finite M-valued logic in which the graduation scale ofM symbolic quantifiers is translated in terms of truth degrees. Moreover,we propose symbolic inference rules allowing us to manage quantified statements. Finally, we present a symbolic formal-isation of direct inference principle allowing us to reason with particular individuals.
