How African American Adolescents Manage Depression: Being With Others

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: African American (AA) adolescents with depression face serious negative outcomes. Despite racial/ethnic disparities in treatment utilization, few studies have explored how AA adolescents manage their depression. OBJECTIVE: To describe common ways AA adolescents manage depressive symptoms through relationships with people in their lives. DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive methods were used to analyze the narratives of 22 AA young adults who had been depressed as adolescents and 5 AA adolescents in treatment for depression. RESULTS: A typology describing the varied ways AA adolescents manage their depressive symptoms through interactions with other people was constructed and labeled Being With Others. The five categories in the typology are keeping others at bay, striking out at others, seeking help from others, joining in with others, and having others reach out CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians might use the Being With Others typology to guide discussions related to detecting, assessing, and treating AA adolescents with depression

Effective properties of magneto-electro-elastic two-dimensional cellular solids

2016 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.Two-dimensional cellular solids composed of magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) materials were studied using the finite element method (FEM). A MATLAB code was written to implement field models to determine the effective properties for this cellular solid including elastic, piezoelectric, piezomagnetic, thermal, pyroelectric and pyromagnetic effective properties as a function of the relative density. Results obtained for purely elastic properties were compared with results from other studies and showed good agreement. Varying microstructures of the cellular solids including square, equilateral triangle and hexagonal systems, were considered and comparisons between the results of all the geometries were established. The triangular cellular solid was the stiffest among all shapes, and the regular hexagon cellular solid showed the highest effective coupling constants for the piezoelectric, piezomagnetic, pyroelectric and pyromagnetic coefficients. The thermal expansion coefficient was found to be independent from the relative density and was constant for all the MEE cellular solid shapes. A set of simple equations are proposed to approximate the effective properties for these low density MEE solids

Assessment testing can be used to inform policy decisions : the case of Jordan

Over the past two decades, the Jordanian education system has made significant advances. Net enrollment in basic education increased from 89 percent in 2000 to 97 percent in 2006. Transition rates to secondary education increased from 63 to 79 percent in the same period. At the same time, Jordan made significant gains on international surveys of student achievement, with a particularly impressive gain of almost 30 points on the science portion of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study. Changes in test scores over time are presented and analyzed using decomposition analysis. The trends are related to policy changes over time. It is argued that benchmarking education systems and constant feedback between researchers and policymakers contributed to this achievement.Tertiary Education,Education For All,Teaching and Learning,Secondary Education,Primary Education

EVALUATING THE USE OF A SPECIALISED TECHNOLOGICAL APPLICATION ON STUDENTS LEARNING GROWTH

    Get PDF
From experience, students usually drop in their achievement levels only when faced with a situation that is beyond their control. Situations that impact them are either physical, mental, or both, such as bullying, family sickness, or death. The global pandemic that swept the world was a situation that has globally affected all human beings. This impact was substantial not just from a humanistic perspective of well-being but also economically and academically. The economic and human impact was an experience that could be seen directly within the schools of Qatar. Large swathes of children were showing lower academic levels than was predicted before the pandemic. When we returned from Covid, levels of learning were below what teachers expected. Globally, government and school expectations were for children to catch up. In Qatar, this was also the expectation. Schools behaved in such a way that they required children to continue as if they had not missed a second of education. Experience and observation showed differently

Construction management is considered a very important field in civil engineering. A lot of tracks had in civil engineering that achieve construction management, such as risk, time, material and labour. One of the best tracks that achieve construction is risk management in modern civil applications. Moreover, this vital track is connected directly with labour life for this it is a very important issue. Hence, the main cause of death and injuries of labour during working is decline safety measures and sometimes building control management has been utilising traditional risk monitoring. It is considered a major concern of civil engineers. In this paper, a new labour safety system in construction management is proposed to provide a safe environment. However, risk management is designed that based on the fall detection approach of labour during working or walking at high-rise buildings. In other words, online monitoring risk is proposed to support and enhance construction management in civil engineering. The proposed system will play an important role by notifying the console panel on time that helps to reduce the death rate. However, the detection system is heavily based on real pictures received from the cameras. These cameras will be distributed randomly in the building area. These pictures will be analysed at the control panel in construction management for civil engineering. In other words, the decision-maker is strongly dependent on received pictures from these cameras. According to the experimental results, outstanding results is achieved from risk monitoring in construction management

Purpose: To examine Costus afer leaf extract (CALE) protective effects against naproxen-induced gastric ulcer and the mechanisms of protection. Methods: Rats with naproxen-induced ulcer were pretreated with either CALE (800 mg/kg), pantoprazole (20 mg/kg), or a combination of both. Then the ulcer index, total gastric acidity, gastric pH, and curative index were evaluated. In addition, gastric mucin, pepsin, prostaglandin E2, nitric oxide, reduced glutathione, lipid peroxide, and superoxide dismutase were quantified. The gastric pathologicalchange was also evaluated. Results: Rats treated with CALE, pantoprazole, and their combination significantly decreased ulcer index, total gastric acidity, and gastric pH. All treatments induced a significant curative index in favor of the combination. The CALE significantly increased gastric mucin, prostaglandin E2, nitric oxide, reduced glutathione, and superoxide dismutase. However, the CALE significantly decreased pepsin and lipid peroxide product. Conclusion: These results reveal that CALE protects the stomach against naproxen-induced ulcer. This action is linked to increased gastroprotective factors, increased antioxidants, and decreased lipid peroxidation. The CALE may be used as an adjunctive treatment for ulcers caused by NSAIDs. Safety and non-safety applications in the external communication systems of self-driving vehicles require authentication of control data, cooperative awareness messages and notification messages. Traditional security systems can prevent attackers from hacking or breaking important system functionality in autonomous vehicles. This paper presents a novel security system designed to protect vehicular ad hoc networks in self-driving and semi-autonomous vehicles that is based on Integrated Circuit Metric technology (ICMetrics). ICMetrics has the ability to secure communication systems in autonomous vehicles using features of the autonomous vehicle system itself. This security system is based on unique extracted features from vehicles behaviour and its sensors. Specifically, features have been extracted from bias values of infrared sensors which are used alongside semantically extracted information from a trace file of a simulated vehicular ad hoc network. The practical experimental implementation and evaluation of this system demonstrates the efficiency in identifying of abnormal/malicious behaviour typical for an attack
