Tight Cutoffs for Guarded Protocols with Fairness

Guarded protocols were introduced in a seminal paper by Emerson and Kahlon (2000), and describe systems of processes whose transitions are enabled or disabled depending on the existence of other processes in certain local states. We study parameterized model checking and synthesis of guarded protocols, both aiming at formal correctness arguments for systems with any number of processes. Cutoff results reduce reasoning about systems with an arbitrary number of processes to systems of a determined, fixed size. Our work stems from the observation that existing cutoff results for guarded protocols i) are restricted to closed systems, and ii) are of limited use for liveness properties because reductions do not preserve fairness. We close these gaps and obtain new cutoff results for open systems with liveness properties under fairness assumptions. Furthermore, we obtain cutoffs for the detection of global and local deadlocks, which are of paramount importance in synthesis. Finally, we prove tightness or asymptotic tightness for the new cutoffs.Comment: Accepted for publication at VMCAI 2016. Extended version, revised after conference review

Symptoms of neuromuscular dysfunction are quite common in patients with hypothyroidism. Structural changes of myelin and dysfunction of oligodendroglial processes in axons have pathogenetic significance in patients with neuropathies against the background of hypothyroidism. However, the etiopathogenesis of the development of neuropathies in hypothyroidism is not fully understood. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a modern imaging method that now provides an image of nerve trunks with a quality sufficient to assess their condition. The main task of MRI is to assess the difficult and atypical cases of nerve compression. We examined 26 patients diagnosed with hypothyroidism, including 8 patients with degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the spine, 1 patient — an anomaly of nerves and muscles, 2 patients were found to have the consequences of injuries, 1 patient was diagnosed with De-Kervin disease, and 14 patients with comorbidity, leading to nerve compression, was not found. The aim of the study was to assess the diagnostic capabilities of magnetic resonance imaging for compression-ischemic neuropathies of the hands in patients with hypothyroidism. Neurological examination and data from stimulation electroneuromyography allows you to accurately determine the area of investigation for MRI. The article shows the diagnostic capabilities of MRI, as well as its place in the diagnostic algorithm of compression-ischemic neuropathies of the hands in patients with hypothyroidism.

Improved functionalization of oleic acid-coated iron oxide nanoparticles for biomedical applications

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles can providemultiple benefits for biomedical applications in aqueous environments such asmagnetic separation or magnetic resonance imaging. To increase the colloidal stability and allow subsequent reactions, the introduction of hydrophilic functional groups onto the particles’ surface is essential. During this process, the original coating is exchanged by preferably covalently bonded ligands such as trialkoxysilanes. The duration of the silane exchange reaction, which commonly takes more than 24 h, is an important drawback for this approach. In this paper, we present a novel method, which introduces ultrasonication as an energy source to dramatically accelerate this process, resulting in high-quality waterdispersible nanoparticles around 10 nmin size. To prove the generic character, different functional groups were introduced on the surface including polyethylene glycol chains, carboxylic acid, amine, and thiol groups. Their colloidal stability in various aqueous buffer solutions as well as human plasma and serum was investigated to allow implementation in biomedical and sensing applications.status: publishe

ROLE AND PLACE OF DAPAGLIFLOZIN IN THE MANAGEMENT OF 2nd TYPE DIABETES: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

A new approach to the treatment of the Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) based on drug-induced glycosuria and reduction in renal threshold of glucose, and drugs with a similar mechanism of action belong to an innovative class of antidiabetic drugs: inhibitors of 2nd type sodium-glucose cotransporter (GLT-2). In addition to improving glycemic control SGCT-2 inhibitors promote moderate weight loss and blood pressure (BP), increased sensitivity of tissues to insulin and improve β-cell function. Dapagliflozin an oral SGCT-2 inhibitor, which is due to the insulin independent mechanism of action is characterized by the minimal risk of hypoglycemia compared to traditional antidiabetic drugs, such as sulfonylurea and insulin. For this reason, the drug has the unique ability to combine with other oral hypoglycemic agents (OHGA). In addition, due to its natriuretic effect and ability to reduce body weight and blood pressure dapagliflozin is the drug of choice in patients with T2DM and cardiovascular diseases of atherosclerotic genesis. A combination of advantages, including a favorable safety profile of dapagliflozin allows extensive use of this drug for the initiation and intensification of T2DM treatment

A Hybrid Method for the Verification and Synthesis of Parameterized Self-Stabilizing Protocols

© Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015. This paper presents a hybrid method for verification and synthesis of parameterized self-stabilizing protocols where algorithmic design and mechanical verification techniques/tools are used hand-inhand. The core idea behind the proposed method includes the automated synthesis of self-stabilizing protocols in a limited scope (i.e., fixed number of processes) and the use of theorem proving methods for the generalization of the solutions produced by the synthesizer. Specifically, we use the Prototype Verification System (PVS) to mechanically verify an algorithm for the synthesis of weakly self-stabilizing protocols. Then, we reuse the proof of correctness of the synthesis algorithm to establish the correctness of the generalized versions of synthesized protocols for an arbitrary number of processes. We demonstrate the proposed approach in the context of an agreement and a coloring protocol on the ring topology

Correction of hypertriglyceridemia in order to reduce the residual risk in atherosclerosis-related diseases. Expert Council Opinion

In opinion the Expert council provides management tactics for patients with hypertriglyceridemia (HTG). It is demonstrated that HTG is a common condition in overweight patients and is an important component of residual risk. HTG creates additional conditions for the progression of atherosclerosis, so the level of triglycerides (TG) is recommended to be measured in patients with a high, very high and extremely high risk level. An indication for the appointment of drugs that reduce the concentration of TG is its level of more than 2,3 mmol/L. Statins are the agents of choice to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in high-risk patients with hypercholesterolemia and HTG. Fenofibrate is used to correct HTG, and in case of intolerance to it or when the target level of TG is not reached, omega-3 ethers of polyunsaturated fatty acids in a dose of 2-4 g/day are recommended. In patients with HTG with a TG level >5,6 mmol/L, fenofibrate is the agent of choice
