    Weaving Entities into Relations: From Page Retrieval to Relation Mining on the Web

    With its sheer amount of information, the Web is clearly an important frontier for data mining. While Web mining must start with content on the Web, there is no effective ``search-based'' mechanism to help sifting through the information on the Web. Our goal is to provide a such online search-based facility for supporting query primitives, upon which Web mining applications can be built. As a first step, this paper aims at entity-relation discovery, or E-R discovery, as a useful function-- to weave scattered entities on the Web into coherent relations. To begin with, as our proposal, we formalize the concept of E-R discovery. Further, to realize E-R discovery, as our main thesis, we abstract tuple ranking-- the essential challenge of E-R discovery-- as pattern-based cooccurrence analysis. Finally, as our key insight, we observe that such relation mining shares the same core functions as traditional page-retrieval systems, which enables us to build the new E-R discovery upon today's search engines, almost for free. We report our system prototype and testbed, WISDM-ER, with real Web corpus. Our case studies have demonstrated a high promise, achieving 83%-91% accuracy for real benchmark queries-- and thus the real possibilities of enabling ad-hoc Web mining tasks with online E-R discovery

    Problematic Internet use and physical health

    Background and aims: A considerable body of literature has emerged over the past two decades assessing the relationship between problematic or addictive use of the Internet and various indices of psychological well-being. Conversely, comparatively little research has assessed the relationship between problematic or addictive use of the Internet and one's physical health. Method: The current study assesses this relationship using a sample of college students (N = 133) who responded online to two questionnaires: the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire (PIUQ; Demetrovics, Szeredi & RĂłzsa, 2008) and the SF-36v2 Health Survey (Ware et al., 2008). Results: The findings indicate that problematic Internet use is associated with poorer physical health. These results are consistent with other data that assessed the relationship between these two variables. Furthermore, this relationship supersedes the influence of the number of hours spent online per day. Conclusions: The findings are discussed in terms of the limitations of the study design and conclusions that can be drawn from this preliminary empirical effort

    Embryonic deregulation of muscle stress signaling pathways leads to altered postnatal stem cell behavior and a failure in postnatal muscle growth

    AbstractPW1 is a mediator of p53 and TNFα signaling pathways previously identified in a screen to isolate muscle stem cell regulators. We generated transgenic mice carrying a C-terminal deleted form of PW1 (ΔPW1) which blocks p53-mediated cell death and TNFα-mediated NFÎșB activation fused to the myogenin promoter. Embryonic/fetal muscle development appears normal during transgene expression, however, postnatal transgenic pups display severe phenotypes including runtism, reduced muscle mass and fiber diameters resembling atrophy. Atrogin-1, a marker of skeletal muscle atrophy, is expressed postnatally in transgenic mice. Electron microscopic analyses of transgenic muscle reveal a marked decrease in quiescent muscle satellite cells suggesting a deregulation of postnatal stem cells. Furthermore, transgenic primary myoblasts show a resistance to the effects of TNFα upon differentiation. Taken together, our data support a role for PW1 and related stress pathways in mediating skeletal muscle stem cell behavior which in turn is critical for postnatal muscle growth and homeostasis. In addition, these data reveal that postnatal stem cell behavior is likely specified during early muscle development

    Moje points out that “scholars have argued that some media, texts, and literacy practices that get counted as new are actually old, but our attention to them is new” (352), and this is true of multimodality. We are being re-engaged with multimodality because of the rise of technologies that allow writers to blend media in seemingly new ways, but we have known before the digital turn that reading and writing are inherently multimodal processes, we just did not have a phrase to describe the multiple semiotic channels that are used to compose until “multimodality.” Early university compositionists conceptualized writing as multimodal in popular pre-twentieth century textbooks, and we can use this early history to inform our contemporary conceptions and pedagogies on multimodality

    The Impact of a GenCyber Camp on In-service Teachers’ TPACK

    The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a GenCyber camp curriculum on teachers’ technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge (TPACK). The camp was designed to engage participants in developing the knowledge and skills to incorporate GenCyber Cybersecurity First Principles and GenCyber Cybersecurity Concepts (GenCyber, 2019) into their curriculums. Participants (37 middle and high school teachers from a variety of disciplines) attended one of two weeklong camps held at a Midwestern liberal arts university. Using the TPACK Self-Reflection and TPACK Self-Assessment Surveys, pre- and post-camp data were collected from participants. Findings indicate that participants demonstrated an increase in all domains of the TPACK framework from pre- to post-survey. The greatest increase was in Technological Pedagogy Knowledge (TPK) (0.57), followed by Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) (0.51), and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) (0.46). GenCyber participants also demonstrated an average increase in pre- and post-test scores in all areas on the TPACK Self-Assessment Survey Results; however, individual results were mixed. The majority of participants (n=21), sixty percent, saw an increase in composite score from pre- to post, whereas 12 participants\u27 (34%) scores decreased from pre- to post, and two (6%) stayed the same. Findings indicate the GenCyber Camp provided in-service teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to incorporate GenCyber Principles and Cybersecurity Concepts into their curriculum. Recommendations for teacher professional development on cybersecurity are made

    Comparison of Primary Care Physician Reimbursement Rates in the United States

    With a growing shortage of physicians, particularly primary care physicians, the issue of adequate pay in Hawai‘i is increasingly important. Anecdotal reports of low pay in Hawai‘i have rarely been substantiated. Data from FAIR Health, a company that tracks private insurance reimbursement rates, is compared across the United States (US) for the CPT code 99213. In addition, FAIR Health and Medicare rates are compared for cities with both similar and disparate cost of living to Hawai‘i. Hawai‘i is in the second lowest quintile for payment in the US for private insurances, and providers are reimbursed significantly lower than in cities with similar cost of living by both Medicare and private insurances. Methods for increasing payment to physicians in Hawai‘i are essential to recruiting the necessary workforce. Revising payment methodologies that increase pay for services in areas of unmet need, revising Medicare Geographic Price Cost Indices to better balance pay in areas of need, and making use of the 10% Medicare Bonus Program for physicians working in Health Professions Shortage Areas are first steps to creating a sustainable plan for physician payment in the future

    Vision and the experience of built environments: two visual pathways of awareness, attention and embodiment in architecture

CondiaThe unique contribution of Vision and the Experience of Built Environments is its specific investigation into the visual processing system of the mind in relationship with the features of awareness and embodiment during the experience of architecture. Each facet of this investigation reflects the essential ingredients of sensation (the visual system), perception (our awareness), and emotions (our embodiment) respectively as a process for aesthetically experiencing our built environments. In regards to our visual system, it is well established in neuroscience that human vision divides into the central and peripheral fields of view. Central vision extends from the point of gaze (where we are looking) out to about 5° of visual angle (the width of one’s fist at arm’s length), while peripheral vision is the vast remainder of the visual field. These visual fields project to the parvo and magno ganglion cells which process distinctly different types of information from the world around us and project that information to the ventral and dorsal visual streams respectively. Building on the dorsal/ventral stream dichotomy, we can further distinguish between focal processing of central vision and ambient processing of peripheral vision. Thus, our visual processing of, and attention to, objects and scenes depends on how and where these stimuli fall on the retina. Built environments are no exception to these dependencies, specifically in terms of how focal object perception and ambient spatial perception create intellectual and phenomenal experiences respectively with architecture. These two forms of visual processing limit and guide our perception of the built world around us and subsequently our projected and extended embodied interactions with it as manifested in the act of aesthetic experience. By bringing peripheral vision and central vision together in a balanced perspective we will more fully understand that our aesthetic relationship with our built environment is greatly dependent on the dichotomous visual mechanisms of awareness and embodiment
