    Korea's stem cell research crisis: exploring a new model to gauge ethical intent of crisis communication strategies

    This thesis begins with the questions of how unethical public relations activities were reported the media, how image restoration strategies could be employed and how moral development theory could be applied to public relations ethics research. Using Benoit's image restoration discourse theory and Kohlberg's moral development theory, this study explores these questions by analyzing the Korean media coverage on the crisis caused by Hwang's scandal. The study's content analysis not only reveals that the Korean media changed their positive attitude toward stem cell research and Hwang, but it also shows that the model of Benoit's image restoration discourse theory and Kohlberg's moral development theory partly worked to generate baseline knowledge for future research

    Benign metastasizing leiomyoma of the lung

    Benign leiomyomas of the uterus are uncommonly found in association with benign smooth muscle tumors beyond the confines of the uterus. Benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) is a rare disease in which the lung is described to be the most afflicted extrauterine organ. We present a brief review of the literature, along with case reports for four patients who were followed up after resection of a pulmonary lesion or after pathological confirmation by biopsy. The clinical course of BML varies from chronic asymptomatic appearance to rapid progression, leading to respiratory failure and death. Our BML patients did not complain of pulmonary symptoms, such as cough, dyspnea, or chest tightness. Pathology revealed benign leiomyomas with no atypia and mitotic activity <5 per 10 high-power field. Immunohistochemical staining was positive for actin and desmin. A standard treatment for BML has not yet been established. Because of the hormone-sensitive characteristics of BML, treatments are based on hormonal manipulation along with either surgical or medical oophorectomy. Benign metastasizing leiomyoma can be observed in postmenopausal women. We observed four patients who did not receive adjuvant hormonal therapy because they were postmenopausal or perimenopausal. All patients are still healthy and show no evidence of recurrence or progression of the disease

    Microbial changes under packaging conditions during transport and comparison between sampling methods of beef

    This study was performed to evaluate the microbial and temperature changes of boxed beef during transport and distribution under vacuum and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), and to compare between excision and swab sampling for 15 days. The top round and striploin (quality grade 1) from Hanwoo steers at 2 days post-slaughter were obtained from a local meat processing plants and chilled at 4 ± 2°C in a cold room. The boxes were transported under refrigeration (4 ± 2°C) to the laboratory within half an hour. Vacuum and MAP packs were subsequently taken out from cool boxes, and microbiological examinations were carried out at 0, 6, 12, and 24 h of storage time. MAP was more effective than vacuum packaging for the inhibition of total aerobic, lactic acid bacteria and Pseudomonas (p < 0.05). Microbial loads of swab methods were slightly lower than those of excision ones (p < 0.05). The results of this study could be utilized by meat consumers in future studies as well as by manufacturers to determine the ideal storage conditions for cool boxed meat, thus ensuring reduced economic losses due to spoilage

    The clinical significance of MiR-148a as a predictive biomarker in patients with advanced colorectal cancer

    Aim: Development of robust prognostic and/or predictive biomarkers in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) is imperative for advancing treatment strategies for this disease. We aimed to determine whether expression status of certain miRNAs might have prognostic/predictive value in CRC patients treated with conventional cytotoxic chemotherapies. Methods: We studied a cohort of 273 CRC specimens from stage II/III patients treated with 5-fluorouracil-based adjuvant chemotherapy and stage IV patients subjected to 5-fluorouracil and oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy. In a screening set (n = 44), 13 of 21 candidate miRNAs were successfully quantified by multiplex quantitative RT-PCR. In the validation set comprising of the entire patient cohort, miR-148a expression status was assessed by quantitative RT-PCR, and its promoter methylation was quantified by bisulfite pyrosequencing. Lastly, we analyzed the associations between miR-148a expression and patient survival. Results: Among the candidate miRNAs studied, miR-148a expression was most significantly down-regulated in advanced CRC tissues. In stage III and IV CRC, low miR-148a expression was associated with significantly shorter disease free-survival (DFS), a worse therapeutic response, and poor overall survival (OS). Furthermore, miR-148a methylation status correlated inversely with its expression, and was associated with worse survival in stage IV CRC. In multivariate analysis, miR-148a expression was an independent prognostic/predictive biomarker for advanced CRC patients (DFS in stage III, low vs. high expression, HR 2.11; OS in stage IV, HR 1.93). Discussion: MiR-148a status has a prognostic/predictive value in advanced CRC patients treated with conventional chemotherapy, which has important clinical implications in improving therapeutic strategies and personalized management of this malignancy

    Effect of the Ratio of Raw Material Components on the Physico-chemical Characteristics of Emulsion-type Pork Sausages

    This study was conducted to investigate the effects of raw material ratio on the physicochemical characteristics of emulsion-type pork sausages. Experiment design was divided into 12 treatments, based on protein level (P), fat level (3P, 3.5P, and 4P), and water level (4P+10, 4P+15, 4P+20, and 4P+25). The pH and shear force values were significantly higher in T7 (3.5P fat and 4P+20 water) than those of other treatments. The lightness and redness were greatly reduced by increasing the quantity of water. The treatments containing 3P fat and 4P+20 water had the highest values of cohesiveness, springiness, gumminess, and chewiness. On the whole, when the protein (P) and fat (3P, 3.5P, 4P) levels were fixed, an increase over the appropriate moisture level deteriorated many physicochemical characteristics

    Structurally tuned lead magnesium titanate perovskite as a photoelectrode material for enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting

    This is the first demonstration of four distinct types of Lead Magnesium Titanate (PMT) perovskites including spheres, flakes, hierarchical flower and thin microbelt shapes that were finely tuned via facile solution method to develop cost effective and high performance photoanode materials for water splitting. The influence of solvent effects during structural tuning, purity, morphology, optical absorption, structural phase transition and stoichiometric formation of the prepared Lead Magnesium Titanate perovskites has been discussed in detail. A remarkable observation is that the thin microbelts structured PMT perovskite (PMTT) exhibited an excellent water splitting performance and it is more sensitive to the illuminated visible light. Owing to the unique structural features, the photoconversion efficiency value of PMTT perovskite is ∌3.9, 3.54, 2.85 and 1.52 times higher than those of other prepared PMT perovskites including pristine PbTiO3. The excellent water splitting performance of PMTT (thin microbelts) may be ascribed to the remarkable structural features that include a large surface area, high optical absorbance, more active sites and high interface area of the microbelts, which provide large contact areas between the electrolyte and highly active materials for electrolyte diffusion and a rapid route for charge transfer with minimal diffusion resistance. In addition, each thin microbelt is directly in contact with the Ni foam substrate, which can also shorten the diffusion path for the electrons. The demonstrated approach paves the way for low-cost and high-throughput production of next generation, high performance and highly active water splitting perovskite photocatalysts.</p

    Medium Access Control for Opportunistic Concurrent Transmissions under Shadowing Channels

    We study the problem of how to alleviate the exposed terminal effect in multi-hop wireless networks in the presence of log-normal shadowing channels. Assuming node location information, we propose an extension of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol that sched-ules concurrent transmissions in the presence of log-normal shadowing, thus mitigating the exposed terminal problem and improving network throughput and delay performance. We observe considerable improvements in throughput and delay achieved over the IEEE 802.11 MAC under various network topologies and channel conditions in ns-2 simulations, which justify the importance of considering channel randomness in MAC protocol design for multi-hop wireless networks
