Ethnographic Approaches: Contextual religious cosmopolitanisms in Mumbai

    Get PDF
Under embargo until: 2022-07-01Based on material collected in a research project on the role of religion in the everyday life of selected Mumbai neighborhoods, this chapter begins by discussing the various stages of field research and the factors leading to a diversification of the project’s initial objectives. Moving from the question of interreligious perception and communication to the wider field of everyday multiculturalism shifted the focus of the project to the ways in which individuals perceive their culturally diverse surroundings, and to the various degrees of engagement with culturally different others. The inquiry into the self-positioning of individuals in mixed-cultural urban settings resulted in descriptions of specific variants of cosmopolitanism. Two case studies included in the second part of the chapter illustrate the complexity of individual stances with regard to cultural differences in Mumbai. These attitudes often encompassed both openness and moments of uncertainty in instances of intercultural encounters. The instability of individual cosmopolitan claims observed during fieldwork played out in various ways, and was always eclectic, relational, and contextual.acceptedVersio

Striving towards gender equality in education The role of Bernice Sandler

    Get PDF
This qualitative study examines why Bernice Sandler's role was significant in achieving gender equality in education, and the role she played in the enactment of Title IX legislation, which changed the face of American education. A historical overview of the development of women's higher education is provided and evaluated in order to describe the context of gender discrimination. Gender has been an important tool of oppression of women for centuries. In that aspect, no country has been an exception, including the United States. Like everywhere else, in America as well, the socio-cultural norms and gender roles expectations hindered women from achieving a full education. The potential barriers to women's higher education, as well as the potential outcomes of these marginalizations, were explored in order to gain a more in-depth understanding of this study. Women faced innumerable socially constructed barriers that constrained their educational development. Women's proper role was considered to be a mother, and her proper place was the home. Everything else was considered beyond the normal gender role definitions. But fortunately, there were few early voices that propagated the idea of the importance of giving higher education for women. As a result, women's higher education has gone through various forms, and types of institutions. Female seminaries, women's colleges, co-education and so on, before it spread to all colleges and universities. Even though by the middle of the twentieth century, women have gained broader access to education, but in certain areas, discrimination was still rampant. For example, especially in medicine, law, and business women's entry was restricted through various measures, such as the quota system, which used to limit the number of women being admitted. In the academic workplace, female faculties were more often not promoted or given tenure. Bernice Sandler's activism led to the passing of the Title IX legislation. By mandating to treat all students equally in all aspects of the education, especially in areas regarding admissions, recruitment, financial assistance, etc., in all federally funded institutions, Title IX eliminated all such practices, creating a more gender-equitable environment in education. Most importantly, it was Sandler's almost single-handed initiative that set things in motion and led to changing the educational landscape

A ‘Bittersweet’ Story. The Privatization of the Hungarian Sugar Industry

Dr Péter Bertalan’s monograph, A ‘Bittersweet’ Story. The Privatization of the Hungarian Sugar Industry in the Light of Globalization and Geopolitics reveals the economic history of an era with scientific fastidiousness, but nevertheless in a readable and understandable style, by depicting an authentic picture of the privatization of the Hungarian sugar industry after the transition to democracy. Although his inquiry focuses on a single industry and, in particular, the Kaposvár sugar factory, he is not analysing a unique phenomenon. He places the bittersweet story of the sugar factory in a broader context, and points out the deeprooted conflicts and complex processes which accompanied the change of regime

The work purpose is a pilot study of distribution of temperature in porous, saturated with liquid, substance under various conditions of heat exchange on external borders. In the course of experiment distributions of temperature in porous, saturated with liquid, substance were investigated under various conditions of heat exchange on external borders. Dependences of time of crystallization of liquid and distributions of values of temperatures in various sections of volume of porous material are received from time of his cooling. Have been as a result experimentally received the value of temperatures in volume saturated with liquid, porous material under various conditions of freezing
