Scintillation light produced by low-energy beams of highly-charged ions
Measurements have been performed of scintillation light intensities emitted
from various inorganic scintillators irradiated with low-energy beams of
highly-charged ions from an electron beam ion source (EBIS) and an electron
cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS). Beams of xenon ions Xe with
various charge states between =2 and =18 have been used at energies
between 5 keV and 17.5 keV per charge generated by the ECRIS. The intensity of
the beam was typically varied between 1 and 100 nA. Beams of highly charged
residual gas ions have been produced by the EBIS at 4.5 keV per charge and with
low intensities down to 100 pA. The scintillator materials used are flat
screens of P46 YAG and P43 phosphor. In all cases, scintillation light emitted
from the screen surface was detected by a CCD camera. The scintillation light
intensity has been found to depend linearly on the kinetic ion energy per time
deposited into the scintillator, while up to =18 no significant contribution
from the ions' potential energy was found. We discuss the results on the
background of a possible use as beam diagnostics e.g. for the new HITRAP

Creative Relations
Through reporting about a project with male home carers, I’m going to present some of the interactions which took place between myself (as the artist) and the participants as we got to know each other, and became part of each other’s lives. The text takes the form of a series of extracts taken directly from my own personal journals followed by a commentary on each. These have been selected to highlight the similarities between Ingold’s descriptions of creativity and Kester’s model for a dialogical aesthetic, which highlights key points in the engagement processes of a socially engaged artist. These reflective notes, made while the experiences were still fresh in my mind, help to illustrate the impact not only on the participants but also upon the artist as a participant in the social process
Experimental Investigation of Base Pressure on Blunt-Trailing-Edge Wings at Supersonic Velocities
Measurements of base pressure are presented for 29 blunt-trailing-edge wings having an aspect ratio of 3.0 and various airfoil profiles. The different profiles comprised thickness ratios between 0.05 and 0.10, boattail angles between -2.9 degrees and 20 degrees, and ratios of trailing-edge thickness to airfoil thickness between 0.2 and 1.0. The tests were conducted at Mach numbers of 1.25, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.1. For each Mach number, the Reynolds number and angle of attack were varied. The lowest Reynolds number investigated was 0.2 x 10(6) and the highest was 3.5 x 10(6). Measurements on each wing were obtained separately with turbulent flow and laminar flow in the boundary layer. Span-wise surveys of the base pressure were conducted on several wings. The results with turbulent boundary-layer flow showed only small effects on base pressure of variations in Reynolds number, airfoil profile shape, boattail angle, and angle of attack.
