    The Periglacial Landscape Of Utopia Planitia; Geologic Evidence For Recent Climate Change On Mars.

    The northern plains of Utopia Planitia, Mars, hosts an abundance of potential periglacial landforms including scalloped depressions, gullies, and polygon networks. This research was undertaken to investigate the distribution and stratigraphy of scalloped depressions in Utopia Planitia and to reconstruct the past environment in which this periglacial landscape formed. To that end, a revised geologic map of the region has been produced. We define, for the first time, a new Periglacial Unit, the youngest geologic unit in Utopia Planitia. We have also developed a model for the formation and evolution of the periglacial landscape examined by assessing the use of scalloped depressions as indicators of climate change, and combining our geologic evidence with recent climate change model predictions. It is concluded that in the recent past Utopia Planitia has experienced an intensified regional climate and a dynamic, evolving landscape that has recorded the changing climate of Mars

    Pre-Mission Input Requirements to Enable Successful Sample Collection by a Remote Field/EVA Team

    We used a field excursion to the West Clearwater Lake Impact structure as an opportunity to test factors that contribute to the decisions a remote field team (for example, astronauts conducting extravehicular activities (EVA) on planetary surfaces) makes while collecting samples for return to Earth. We found that detailed background on the analytical purpose of the samples, provided to the field team, enables them to identify and collect samples that meet specific analytical objectives. However, such samples are not always identifiable during field reconnaissance activities, and may only be recognized after outcrop characterization and interpretation by crew and/or science team members. We therefore recommend that specific time be allocated in astronaut timeline planning to collect specialized samples, that this time follow human or robotic reconnaissance of the geologic setting, and that crew member training should include exposure to the laboratory techniques and analyses that will be used on the samples upon their return to terrestrial laboratories

    Short-term losses and long-term gains: the non-native species Austrominius modestus in Lough Hyne Marine Nature Reserve

    The non-native barnacle species Austrominius modestus was first recorded in Ireland, close to Lough Hyne marine nature reserve in 1957. This species was not recorded inside the Lough until 1980, but by 2001 was the dominant intertidal barnacle within the reserve. It has been suggested that increases in the abundance of this species at other locations in Europe may be linked to increasing sea surface temperatures, and that A. modestus is an “ecological sleeper”. Despite an overall trend for increasing sea surface temperatures, this long term warming is punctuated by extreme events such as severely cold winters. A. modestus is warm water adapted, and has been recorded to decrease in abundance following cold winters. The winters of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 were amongst the coldest recorded in Ireland in past decades. In the present study, higher levels of mortality were recorded for A. modestus than native barnacle species in Lough Hyne following these cold winters. Additionally, this species was recorded at lower abundances at the majority of sites surveyed in Lough Hyne in 2011 compared with 2009. Despite this, A. modestus remains the dominant barnacle species in the Lough and monitoring the recruitment of intertidal barnacles within Lough Hyne during 2014e2015 revealed that A. modestus was the most abundant recruit at study sites, both in removal plots and in the pre-existing community. The year-round breeding of A. modestus in addition to the closed nature of the Lough promotes A. modestus within the reserve. Despite this, native barnacle species continue to persist in Lough Hyne, though generally at low abundances, with the exception of exposed locations such as the Rapids and Bullock Island where natives outnumber A. modestus. The future intertidal barnacle community within the Lough is likely to be dominated by A. modestus with Chthamalus montagui and C. stellatus being abundant at sites which are not suitable for A. modestus. While the consequences of this are unknown, it is possible that the presence of A. modestus may alter trophic interactions and energy flow within the reserve

    X-linked lymphoproliferative disease due to SAP/SH2D1A deficiency: A multicenter study on the manifestations, management and outcome of the disease

    X-linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLP1) is a rare immunodeficiency characterized by severe immune dysregulation and caused by mutations in the SH2D1A/SAP gene. Clinical manifestations are varied and include hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), lymphoma and dysgammaglobulinemia, often triggered by Epstein-Barr virus infection. Historical data published before improved treatment regimens shows very poor outcome. We describe a large cohort of 91 genetically defined XLP1 patients collected from centers worldwide and report characteristics and outcome data for 43 patients receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) and 48 untransplanted patients. The advent of better treatment strategies for HLH and malignancy has greatly reduced mortality for these patients, but HLH still remains the most severe feature of XLP1. Survival after allogeneic HSCT is 81.4% with good immune reconstitution in the large majority of patients and little evidence of posttransplant lymphoproliferative disease. However, survival falls to 50% in patients with HLH as a feature of disease. Untransplanted patients have an overall survival of 62.5% with the majority on immunoglobulin replacement therapy, but the outcome for those untransplanted after HLH is extremely poor (18.8%). HSCT should be undertaken in all patients with HLH, because outcome without transplant is extremely poor. The outcome of HSCT for other manifestations of XLP1 is very good, and if HSCT is not undertaken immediately, patients must be monitored closely for evidence of disease progression. © 2011 by The American Society of Hematology

    Diagnostic performance of point-of-care ubiquitin carboxy-terminal Hydrolase-L1 assay in distinguishing imaging abnormalities in traumatic brain injury: A TRACK-TBI cohort study

    The use of UCH-L1 detection with point-of-care (POC) assay alone has not been characterized for clinical use. This study compares the accuracies of POC UCH-L1 and Neuron-Specific Enolase (NSE) Elecsys® levels for identifying TBI patients with structural abnormalities on neuroimaging.The Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in Traumatic Brain Injury (TRACK-TBI) Phase 1 Cohort, enrolled 1375 TBI patients (GCS 3–15) presenting to one of 18 US Level I trauma centers within 24 h of injury who had an admission head CT; blood samples were collected, along with 122 orthopedic and 209 healthy controls. The TBI cohort consisted of 810 CT-negative (CT-) and 549 CT-positive (CT+) subjects. Of the CT- subjects who had MRIs, 121 were MRI-positive (MRI+) and 333 were MRI-negative (MRI-). UCH-L1 POC showed best diagnostic performance for CT + versus CT-, 0–8 h post-injury with an AUC of 0·779 [0·708–0.850] when compared to the 0–25 h interval, with an AUC of 0.684 [0.655–0.712]. NSE assay has an AUC of 0.695 [0.619–0.770] for the 0–8 h interval and 0.634 [0.603–0.665] for the 0–25 h interval. During the first 8 after injury, POC UCH-L1 outperforms NSE in identifying TBI patients with structural abnormalities on neuroimaging
