A general numerical analysis program for the superconducting quasiparticle mixer
A user-oriented computer program SISCAP (SIS Computer Analysis Program) for analyzing SIS mixers is described. The program allows arbitrary impedance terminations to be specified at all LO harmonics and sideband frequencies. It is therefore able to treat a much more general class of SIS mixers than the widely used three-frequency analysis, for which the harmonics are assumed to be short-circuited. An additional program, GETCHI, provides the necessary input data to program SISCAP. The SISCAP program performs a nonlinear analysis to determine the SIS junction voltage waveform produced by the local oscillator. The quantum theory of mixing is used in its most general form, treating the large signal properties of the mixer in the time domain. A small signal linear analysis is then used to find the conversion loss and port impedances. The noise analysis includes thermal noise from the termination resistances and shot noise from the periodic LO current. Quantum noise is not considered. Many aspects of the program have been adequately verified and found accurate
Prospects for India's cereal supply and demand to 2020:
The possibility of an emerging cereal gap of serious proportions by the year 2020, is a useful illustration of the kind of constructive dialogue IFPRI hopes to encourage. It responds to several quite recent developments, notably the rapid expansion of India's industrial and service sectors since the 1991 structural reforms, the improved prospects for continued growth over the next few decades, and the likelihood of rising per capita incomes that could generate substantially increased demand for livestock products. As demand for livestock products grows, livestock production could increasingly depend on cereals for feed — perhaps as much as 50 million tons by 2020, according to G.S. Bhalla, Peter Hazell, and John Kerr, authors of this 2020 discussion paper on Prospects for Balancing Cereal Needs in India to 2020. These conclusions differ somewhat from other IFPRI studies, which have generally found that growth in demand for livestock products will be lower than the current study. This divergence of views is a useful signal to policymakers to pay careful attention to trends in demand for livestock products in India in the coming years. This study and the rest of IFPRI's 2020 research have consistently pointed to the vital link between agricultural policies and prospects for production growth in the next two decades. The Goldberg-Sachs theorem in linearized gravity
The Goldberg-Sachs theorem has been very useful in constructing algebraically
special exact solutions of Einstein vacuum equation. Most of the physical
meaningful vacuum exact solutions are algebraically special. We show that the
Goldberg-Sachs theorem is not true in linearized gravity. This is a remarkable
result, which gives light on the understanding of the physical meaning of the
linearized solutions.Comment: 6 pages, no figures, LaTeX 2
Amorphization induced by pressure: results for zeolites and general implications
We report an {\sl ab initio} study of pressure-induced amorphization (PIA) in
zeolites, which are model systems for this phenomenon. We confirm the
occurrence of low-density amorphous phases like the one reported by Greaves
{\sl et al.} [Science {\bf 308}, 1299 (2005)], which preserves the crystalline
topology and might constitute a new type of glass. The role of the zeolite
composition regarding PIA is explained. Our results support the correctness of
existing models for the basic PIA mechanim, but suggest that energetic, rather
than kinetic, factors determine the irreversibility of the transition.Comment: 4 pages with 3 figures embedded. More information at

Network-aware Evaluation Environment for Reputation Systems
Parties of reputation systems rate each other and use ratings to compute reputation scores that drive their interactions. When deciding which reputation model to deploy in a network environment, it is important to find the
most suitable model and to determine its right initial configuration. This calls for an engineering approach for describing, implementing and evaluating reputation
systems while taking into account specific aspects of both the reputation systems and the networked environment where they will run. We present a software tool (NEVER) for network-aware evaluation of reputation systems and their rapid prototyping through experiments performed according to user-specified parameters. To demonstrate effectiveness of NEVER, we analyse reputation models based on the beta distribution and the maximum likelihood estimation
An audit of the quality of inpatient care for adults with learning disability in the UK
OBJECTIVES: To audit patient hospital records to evaluate the performance of acute general and mental health services in delivering inpatient care to people with learning disability and explore the influence of organisational factors on the quality of care they deliver. SETTING: Nine acute general hospital Trusts and six mental health services. PARTICIPANTS: Adults with learning disability who received inpatient hospital care between May 2013 and April 2014. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Data on seven key indicators of high-quality care were collected from 176 patients. These covered physical health/monitoring, communication and meeting needs, capacity and decision-making, discharge planning and carer involvement. The impact of services having an electronic system for flagging patients with learning disability and employing a learning disability liaison nurse was assessed. RESULTS: Indicators of physical healthcare (body mass index, swallowing assessment, epilepsy risk assessment) were poorly recorded in acute general and mental health inpatient settings. Overall, only 34 (19.3%) patients received any assessment of swallowing and 12 of the 57 with epilepsy (21.1%) had an epilepsy risk assessment. For most quality indicators, there was a non-statistically significant trend for improved performance in services with a learning disability liaison nurse. The presence of an electronic flagging system showed less evidence of benefit. CONCLUSIONS: Inpatient care for people with learning disability needs to be improved. The work gives tentative support to the role of a learning disability liaison nurse in acute general and mental health services, but further work is needed to confirm these benefits and to trial other interventions that might improve the quality and safety of care for this high-need group
The energy budget in Rayleigh-Benard convection
It is shown using three series of Rayleigh number simulations of varying
aspect ratio AR and Prandtl number Pr that the normalized dissipation at the
wall, while significantly greater than 1, approaches a constant dependent upon
AR and Pr. It is also found that the peak velocity, not the mean square
velocity, obeys the experimental scaling of Ra^{0.5}. The scaling of the mean
square velocity is closer to Ra^{0.46}, which is shown to be consistent with
experimental measurements and the numerical results for the scaling of Nu and
the temperature if there are strong correlations between the velocity and
temperature.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, new version 13 Mar, 200
