CP violating neutrino oscillation and uncertainties in Earth matter density
We propose a statistical formulation to estimate possible errors in long
baseline neutrino oscillation experiments caused by uncertainties in the Earth
matter density. A quantitative investigation of the effect is made on the CP

Production and Decay of D_1(2420)^0 and D_2^*(2460)^0
We have investigated and final states and
observed the two established charmed mesons, the with mass
MeV/c and width MeV/c and
the with mass MeV/c and width
MeV/c. Properties of these final states, including
their decay angular distributions and spin-parity assignments, have been
studied. We identify these two mesons as the doublet predicted
by HQET. We also obtain constraints on {\footnotesize } as a function of the cosine of the relative phase of the two

Spatially heterogeneous ages in glassy dynamics
We construct a framework for the study of fluctuations in the nonequilibrium
relaxation of glassy systems with and without quenched disorder. We study two
types of two-time local correlators with the aim of characterizing the
heterogeneous evolution: in one case we average the local correlators over
histories of the thermal noise, in the other case we simply coarse-grain the
local correlators. We explain why the former describe the fingerprint of
quenched disorder when it exists, while the latter are linked to noise-induced
mesoscopic fluctuations. We predict constraints on the pdfs of the fluctuations
of the coarse-grained quantities. We show that locally defined correlations and
responses are connected by a generalized local out-of-equilibrium
fluctuation-dissipation relation. We argue that large-size heterogeneities in
the age of the system survive in the long-time limit. The invariance of the
theory under reparametrizations of time underlies these results. We relate the
pdfs of local coarse-grained quantities and the theory of dynamic random
manifolds. We define a two-time dependent correlation length from the spatial
decay of the fluctuations in the two-time local functions. We present numerical
tests performed on disordered spin models in finite and infinite dimensions.
Finally, we explain how these ideas can be applied to the analysis of the
dynamics of other glassy systems that can be either spin models without
disorder or atomic and molecular glassy systems.Comment: 47 pages, 60 Fig
Findings from an in-depth annual tree-ring radiocarbon intercomparison
The radiocarbon (ÂčâŽC) calibration curve so far contains annually resolved data only for a short period of time. With accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) matching the precision of decay counting, it is now possible to efficiently produce large datasets of annual resolution for calibration purposes using small amounts of wood. The radiocarbon intercomparison on single-year tree-ring samples presented here is the first to investigate specifically possible offsets between AMS laboratories at high precision. The results show that AMS laboratories are capable of measuring samples of Holocene age with an accuracy and precision that is comparable or even goes beyond what is possible with decay counting, even though they require a thousand times less wood. It also shows that not all AMS laboratories always produce results that are consistent with their stated uncertainties. The long-term benefits of studies of this kind are more accurate radiocarbon measurements with, in the future, better quantified uncertainties
Preliminary results of ODP Leg 113 of Joides-Resolution in the Weddell Sea: history of the Antarctic glaciation
Joides-Resolution visited the Weddell Sea from January 5 to March 11, 1987. Twenty-two holes were drilled at nine sites, and allowed us: (1) to find the evidence of strong cooling duringthe early Oligocene in East Antarctica, during the middle Miocene in West Antarctica; (2) todemonstrate the presence of ice during the Oligocene in East Antarctica, during the early late Miocene in West Antarctica; and (3) to establish the age of formation of the ice-sheets, during the middle Miocene in East Antarctica, during the late Miocene in West Antarctica, and provide evidence of theirstability since the first stages of their development
