    Tests of a 1/5-Scale Model of the Republic XP-84 Airplane (Army Project MX-578) in the Langley 300 MPH 7- by 10-Foot Tunnel

    A 1/5-scale model of the Republic x-84 airplane (Army Project MX-578) was tested in the Langley 300 MPH 7- by 10-foot tunnel. The primary object of the tests was twofold: to determine, a practicable method of increasing the longitudinal 3tability in the landing configuration, and to investigate the effects on longitudinal and lateral Stability of various external stored (fuel tanks, bombs, and rockets). The effects of the fuselage dive brakes were also determined, and the critical Mach numbers of certain of the airplane components were estimated. The use of the revised horizontal tail (of larger aspect ratio and area than the original) seemed to be the most feasible expedient for materially increasing the longitudinal stability in the landing configuration. The neutral-point shifts produced by the various external stores were unstable, the largest shift being about 2.5 percent mean aerodynamic chord. No appreciable aerodynamic trim changes were caused by the external stores. From the standpoint of range, maximum s peed, and rate of climb, the advantages of mounting the fuel tanks at the wing tips rather than inboard beneath the wings were clearly demonstrated by the tests. The effective dihedral parameter was the only static lateral-stability derivative appreciably affected by the external stores. At high lift coefficients, the tip-mounted tanks caused a large increase in the effective dihedral parameter (about 40 increase at a lift coefficient of 1.0). This increase was held undesirable, because the tendency toward oscillatory instability that it would cause would be heightened by the increased moments of inertia resulting from the weight of the tanks when carrying fuel. The fuselage dive brakes, when deflected, caused a change in trim tending to nose the airplane up; the neutral point also moved rearward upon deflecting the dive brakes. The amount of elevator required to overcome the change in trim was well within the available range of deflection. It was estimated that a drive-brake deflection of 900 would.decrease the terminal Mach number in a vertical dive by about 0.1. The estimated critical Mach number of the V-front canopy was about 0.04 greater than that of the original canopy. Pressure-distribution tests disclosed severe pressure peaks inside the nose of the jet entrance duct. These peaks, which would lead to separation and consequently poor pressure recovery at, the engine, could be reduced by, using a smaller nose,radius and: a modified internal lip shap

    An ion exchange polymer comprised of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of a poly(carboxylic acid) in a poly(vinyl acetal) matrix is described. The polymer is made by treating a mixture made of poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(acrylic acid) with a suitable aldehyde and an acid catalyst to cause acetalization with some cross-linking. The material is then subjected to an alkaline aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt or an alkali earth metal salt. All of the film forming and cross-linking steps can be carried out simultaneously, if desired

    A new material for removing heavy metals from water

    The NASA Lewis Research Center developed and is patenting a new high capacity ion exchange material (IEM) that removes toxic metals from contaminated water in laboratory tests. The IEM can be made into many forms, such as thin films, coatings, pellets, and fibers. As a result, it can be adapted to many applications to purify contaminated water wherever it is found, be it in waste water treatment systems, lakes, ponds, industrial plants, or in homes. Laboratory tests have been conducted on aqueous solutions containing only one of the following metal cations: lead, copper, mercury, cadmium, silver, chromium (III), nickel, zinc, and yttrium. Tests were also conducted with: (1) calcium present to determine its effects on the uptake of cadmium and copper, and (2) uranium and lanthanides which are stand-ins for other radioactive elements, (3) drinking water for the removal of copper and lead, and (3) others compositions. The results revealed that the IEM removes all these cations, even in the presence of the calcium. Of particular interest are the results of the tests with the drinking water: the lead concentration was reduced from 142 ppb down to 2.8 ppb (well below the accepted EPA standard)

    A new application of ion exchange films is presented. The films are used in a simple analytical method of directly determining low concentrations of Cu(2+) in aqueous solutions, in particular, drinking water. The basis for this new test method is the color and absorption intensity of the ion when adsorbed onto the film. The film takes on the characteristic color of the adsorbed cation, which is concentrated on the film by many orders of magnitude. The linear relationship between absorbance (corrected for variations in film thickness) and solution concentration makes the determinations possible. These determinations agree well with flame atomic absorption determinations

    2-D Radiative Transfer in Protostellar Envelopes: I. Effects of Geometry on Class I Sources

    We present 2-D radiation transfer models of Class I Protostars and show the effect of including more realistic geometries on the resulting spectral energy distributions and images. We begin with a rotationally flattened infalling envelope as our comparison model, and add a flared disk and bipolar cavity. The disk affects the spectral energy distribution most strongly at edge-on inclinations, causing a broad dip at about 10 um (independent of the silicate feature) due to high extinction and low scattering albedo in this wavelength region. The bipolar cavities allow more direct stellar+disk radiation to emerge into polar directions, and more scattering radiation to emerge into all directions. The wavelength-integrated flux, often interpreted as luminosity, varies with viewing angle, with pole-on viewing angles seeing 2-4 times as much flux as edge-on, depending on geometry. Thus, observational estimates of luminosity should take into account the inclination of a source. The envelopes with cavities are significantly bluer in near-IR and mid-IR color-color plots than those without cavities. Using 1-D models to interpret Class I sources with bipolar cavities would lead to an underestimate of envelope mass and an overestimate of the implied evolutionary state. We compute images at near-, mid-, and far-IR wavelengths. We find that the mid-IR colors and images are sensitive to scattering albedo, and that the flared disk shadows the midplane on large size scales at all wavelengths plotted. Finally, our models produce polarization spectra which can be used to diagnose dust properties, such as albedo variations due to grain growth.
