The Effect of Narrative Feedback on the Learning and Transfer of Complex Communication Skills
The purpose of the present research was to examine the effects of narrative performance feedback on learning and transfer of intercultural communication skills learned in an experiential training task. It was predicted that feedback based on a narrative structure, especially from a first-person perspective, would enhance learning by providing schemas for memory organization, contextual information, and emotional content. Using a healthcare-related training task, participants learned the CRASH principles of intercultural sensitivity and then performed a low-fidelity, text-based simulated conversation with a patient and patient’s family member. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three kinds of performance feedback: didactic, third-person narrative, or first-person narrative. Dependent variables were content knowledge as assessed by content quiz scores, transfer of training as assessed by situational judgment tests (SJTs), and subjective experiential learning as assessed by items from the Experiential Learning Survey (ELS). Two separate experiments were conducted: 133 participants completed the task with testing immediately following training, and in a follow-up study 46 participants completed the task with a one-week interval between training and testing. The results showed few significant effects of feedback type. The predicted effects of feedback type on CRASH quiz scores, SJT responses, and ELS scores were not observed. However, there were some interactions between feedback type and gender. Male participants scored significantly lower than female participants on the CRASH content quiz in the didactic feedback condition only, suggesting narrative feedback was uniquely beneficial for males for remembering content. Results from some ELS items suggested that there were gender differences in the didactic condition only, with males giving lower ratings for utility of the training. Taken together, the findings suggest that the type of communication skills performance feedback might not have broad implications in learning, transfer, or subjective experience, but there may be some benefits of narrative feedback for males. Further research is needed to determine whether this effect holds in other contexts with other tasks and measures
Limitations in Predicting the Space Radiation Health Risk for Exploration Astronauts
Despite years of research, understanding of the space radiation environment
and the risk it poses to long-duration astronauts remains limited. There is a
disparity between research results and observed empirical effects seen in human
astronaut crews, likely due to the numerous factors that limit terrestrial
simulation of the complex space environment and extrapolation of human clinical
consequences from varied animal models. Given the intended future of human
spaceflight, with efforts now to rapidly expand capabilities for human missions
to the moon and Mars, there is a pressing need to improve upon the
understanding of the space radiation risk, predict likely clinical outcomes of
interplanetary radiation exposure, and develop appropriate and effective
mitigation strategies for future missions. To achieve this goal, the space
radiation and aerospace community must recognize the historical limitations of
radiation research and how such limitations could be addressed in future
research endeavors. We have sought to highlight the numerous factors that limit
understanding of the risk of space radiation for human crews and to identify
ways in which these limitations could be addressed for improved understanding

NASA/DOD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. Paper 35: The US government technical report and aerospace knowledge diffusion: Results of an on-going investigation
The U.S. government technical report is a primary means by which the results of federally funded research and development (R&D) are transferred to the U.S. aerospace industry. However, little is known about this information product in terms of its actual use, importance, and value in the transfer of federally funded (U.S.) R&D. To help establish a body of knowledge, the U.S. government technical report is being investigated as part of the NASA/DOD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. In this paper, we summarize the literature on technical reports and provide a model that depicts the transfer of federally funded aerospace R&D via the U.S. government technical report. We present results from two surveys (one of five studies) of our investigation of aerospace knowledge diffusion vis-a-vis the U.S. government technical report and close with a brief overview of on-going research into the use of the U.S. government technical report as a rhetorical device for transferring federally funded aerospace R&D
Circumbinary disk evolution in the presence of an outer companion star
We consider a hierarchical triple system consisting of an inner eccentric
binary with an outer companion. A highly misaligned circumbinary disk around
the inner binary is subject to two competing effects: (i) nodal precession
about the inner binary eccentricity vector that leads to an increase in
misalignment (polar alignment) and (ii) Kozai-Lidov (KL) oscillations of
eccentricity and inclination driven by the outer companion that leads to a
reduction in the misalignment. The outcome depends upon the ratio of the
timescales of these effects. If the inner binary torque dominates, then the
disk aligns to a polar orientation. If the outer companion torque dominates,
then the disk undergoes KL oscillations. In that case, the highly eccentric and
misaligned disk is disrupted and accreted by the inner binary, while some mass
is transferred to the outer companion. However, when the torques are similar,
the outer parts of the circumbinary disk can undergo large eccentricity
oscillations while the inclination remains close to the polar orientation. The
range of initial disk inclinations that evolve to a polar orientation is
smaller in the presence of the outer companion. Disk breaking is also more
likely, at least temporarily, during the polar alignment process. The stellar
orbits in HD 98800 have parameters such that polar alignment of the
circumbinary disk is expected. In the absence of the gas, solid particles are
unstable at much smaller radii than the gas disk inner tidal truncation radius
because KL driven eccentricity leads to close encounters with the binary.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ
The Influence of a Crosshair Visual Aid on Observer Detection of Simulated Fetal Heart Rate Signals
Objective To determine whether a visual aid overlaid on fetal heart rate (FHR) tracings increases detection of critical signals relative to images with no visual aid.
Study Design In an experimental study, 21 undergraduate students viewed 240 images of simulated FHR tracings twice, once with the visual aids and once without aids. Performance was examined for images containing three different types of FHR signals (early deceleration, late deceleration, and acceleration) and four different FHR signal-to-noise ratios corresponding to FHR variability types (absent, minimal, moderate, and marked) identified by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (2008). Performance was analyzed using repeated-measures analyses of variance.
Results The presence of the visual aid significantly improved correct detections of signals overall and decreased false alarms for the marked variability condition.
Conclusion The results of the study provide evidence that the presence of a visual aid was useful in helping novices identify FHR signals in simulated maternal-fetal heart rate images. Further, the visual aid was most useful for conditions in which the signal is most difficult to detect (when FHR variability is highest)
Serological detection of infection with canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus and canine adenovirus in communal dogs from Zimbabwe
Domestic dogs are common amongst communities in sub-Saharan Africa and may serve as important reservoirs for infectious agents that may cause diseases in wildlife. Two agents of concern are canine parvovirus (CPV) and canine distemper virus (CDV), which may infect and cause disease in large carnivore species such as African wild dogs and African lions, respectively. The impact of domestic dogs and their diseases on wildlife conservation is increasing in Zimbabwe, necessitating thorough assessment and implementation of control measures. In this study, domestic dogs in north-western Zimbabwe were evaluated for antibodies to CDV, CPV, and canine adenovirus (CAV). These dogs were communal and had no vaccination history. Two hundred and twenty-five blood samples were collected and tested using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for antibodies to CPV, CDV, and CAV. Of these dogs, 75 (34%) had detectable antibodies to CDV, whilst 191 (84%) had antibodies to CPV. Antibodies to canine adenovirus were present in 28 (13%) dogs. Canine parvovirus had high prevalence in all six geographic areas tested. These results indicate that CPV is circulating widely amongst domestic dogs in the region. In addition, CDV is present at high levels. Both pathogens can infect wildlife species. Efforts for conservation of large carnivores in Zimbabwe must address the role of domestic dogs in disease transmission
NASA/DOD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. Report 15: Technical uncertainty and project complexity as correlates of information use by US industry-affiliated aerospace engineers and scientists: Results of an exploratory investigation
An exploratory study was conducted that investigated the influence of technical uncertainty and project complexity on information use by U.S. industry-affiliated aerospace engineers and scientists. The study utilized survey research in the form of a self-administered mail questionnaire. U.S. aerospace engineers and scientists on the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) mailing list served as the study population. The adjusted response rate was 67 percent. The survey instrument is appendix C to this report. Statistically significant relationships were found to exist between technical uncertainty, project complexity, and information use. Statistically significant relationships were found to exist between technical uncertainty, project complexity, and the use of federally funded aerospace R&D. The results of this investigation are relevant to researchers investigating information-seeking behavior of aerospace engineers. They are also relevant to R&D managers and policy planners concerned with transferring the results of federally funded aerospace R&D to the U.S. aerospace industry
Unexpected role of communities colonizing dead coral substrate in the calcification of coral reefs
Global and local anthropogenic stressors such as climate change, acidification, overfishing, and pollution are expected to shift the benthic community composition of coral reefs from dominance by calcifying organisms to dominance by non-calcifying algae. These changes could reduce the ability of coral reef ecosystems to maintain positive net calcium carbonate accretion. However, relationships between community composition and calcification rates remain unclear. We performed field experiments to quantify the metabolic rates of the two most dominant coral reef substrate types, live coral and dead coral substrate colonized by a mixed algal assemblage, using a novel underwater respirometer. Our results revealed that calcification rates in the daytime were similar for the live coral and dead coral substrate communities. However, in the dark, while live corals continued to calcify at slower rates, the dead coral substrate communities exhibited carbonate dissolution. Daytime net photosynthesis of the dead coral substrate communities was up to five times as much as for live corals, which we hypothesize may have created favorable conditions for the precipitation of carbonate minerals. We conclude that: (1) calcification from dead coral substrate communities can contribute to coral reef community calcification during the day, and (2) dead coral substrate communities can also contribute to carbonate mineral dissolution at night, decreasing ecosystem calcification over a diel cycle. This provides evidence that reefs could shift from slow, long-term accretion of calcium carbonate to a state where large daily cycling of calcium carbonate occurs, but with little or no long-term accumulation of the carbonate minerals needed to sustain the reef against erosional forces
Complete genome sequence of an astrovirus identified in a domestic rabbit (\u3cem\u3eOryctolagus cuniculus\u3c/em\u3e) with gastroenteritis
A colony of domestic rabbits in Tennessee, USA, experienced a high-mortality (~90%) outbreak of enterocolitis. The clinical characteristics were one to six days of lethargy, bloating, and diarrhea, followed by death. Heavy intestinal coccidial load was a consistent finding as was mucoid enteropathy with cecal impaction. Preliminary analysis by electron microscopy revealed the presence of virus-like particles in the stool of one of the affected rabbits. Analysis using the Virochip, a viral detection microarray, suggested the presence of an astrovirus, and follow-up PCR and sequence determination revealed a previously uncharacterized member of that family. Metagenomic sequencing enabled the recovery of the complete viral genome, which contains the characteristic attributes of astrovirus genomes. Attempts to propagate the virus in tissue culture have yet to succeed. Although astroviruses cause gastroenteric disease in other mammals, the pathogenicity of this virus and the relationship to this outbreak remains to be determined.
