Related and relevant information were gathered from, educational websites, textbooks and journal articles. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the role of guidance and counselling in education for sustainable development. The paper specifically highlights the following; conceptual clarifications, theoretical framework, Problems confronting Education for sustainable development and possible mitigation strategies and guidance and counselling as a veritable instrument of education for sustainable development. It was suggested amongst others that Guidance and Counselling should be provided at all levels of education since it has been recognized by the National policy on Education as an essential education service needed to support and sustain education

The effects of character education literature of bucket filling strategies on the ability of 5-year-old students to self-regulate in a Montessori classroom

The purpose of this action research project was to explore how the implementation of bucket filling could affect self-regulation in 5-year-olds in a Montessori classroom. The bucket filling theme is character education children’s literature. The collection of data for this action research utilized a mixed method of quantitative and qualitative, including the pre- and post-Preschool Self-Regulation Assessment, daily observation reflections, and tally sheets of behaviors. The data collected and analyzed in this study use of bucket filling can have some effect on self-regulation skills in 5-year-olds in a Montessori classroom. Self-regulation is essential to success in the classroom and in the world at large, any intervention that supports self-regulation is vital for students and teachers

Working Health Services Scotland: a four-year evaluation

Background: Working Health Service Scotland (WHSS) supports the self-employed and employees of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Scotland with a health condition affecting their ability to work, who are either absent or at risk of becoming absent due to it. Aims: To evaluate the impact on health and work outcomes of WHSS clients over a 4-year period. Methods: Data were collected at enrolment, entry, discharge and follow-up at 3 and 6 months after discharge. Clients completed up to three validated health questionnaires at entry and discharge—EuroQol five dimensions (EQ-5D) and visual analogue scale (VAS); Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS); and Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). Results: A total of 13463 referrals occurred in the 4-year period; 11748 (87%) were eligible and completed entry assessment and 60% of the latter completed discharge paperwork. The majority of referrals were due to musculoskeletal conditions (84%) while 12% were referred with mental health conditions. Almost a fifth (18%) of cases were absent at entry and back at work at discharge. Work days lost while in WHSS was associated with age, length of absence prior to entering WHSS, primary health condition and time in programme. All health measures showed significant improvements from entry to discharge. Improvement in general health was sustained at 3- and 6-month follow-up. Conclusions: The WHSS evaluation findings indicate that participation was associated with positive changes to health and return-to-work. The extent of the positive change in health measures and work ability can be highly important economically for employees and employers

Subtherapeutic anticoagulation with dabigatran following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery

AbstractWe report a 66-year-old male with a history of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery who began dabigatran for new onset atrial fibrillation. After 5 weeks of therapy, his transesophageal echocardiogram prior to electrocardioversion showed severe spontaneous echo contrast. Cardioversion was postponed and anticoagulant therapy was continued. The following day, he suffered a thromboembolic stroke. Concern arose that postoperative malabsorption could have resulted in subtherapeutic anticoagulation. This notion was strengthened by a second patient who had subtherapeutic serum levels despite maximal dosing. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to report impaired absorption of dabigatran following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.<Learning objective: Dabigatran has a predictable pharmacokinetic profile, allowing for a fixed-dose regimen that does not require frequent monitoring or dietary modifications. However, its absorption in patients who have undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery has not been studied. Postoperative malabsoprtion, a major complication following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, can result in inadequate anticoagulation. As a result of unpredictable absorption, strategies allowing for routine monitoring may be best in this population.
