Inventory of Cognitive Distortions-Youth Version: The Development and Validation of a Psychometric Test for the Measurement of Cognitive Distortions
Cognitive distortions are systematic biases in an individual’s thinking that maintain a person’s belief in their negative views of themselves or others, even in the presence of contradictory evidence. The Inventory of Cognitive Distortions (ICD), created by Yurica and DiTomasso, provided a template to measure distorted thinking in adults. Currently, there is not a youth measure of cognitive distortions that adequately encapsulates the range of distorted thinking that may be present in youth. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to create and validate a newly designed instrument of cognitive distortions, The Inventory of Cognitive Distortions-Youth Version (ICD-YV), with youth ages 11 to 17. Participants will be recruited through social media, ResearchMatch.org, local school and community organizations and local business and university listservs. The psychometric properties (content validity, construct validity, convergent validity and internal reliability) of the ICD-YV will be assessed. Identifying a valid and reliable tool to evaluate cognitive distortions in youth is needed to facilitate better identification of these patterns of thinking and provide more accurate and targeted treatment, from a cognitive-behavioral perspective
Clusters in the Luminous Giant HII Regions in M101
(Abridged) We have obtained HST WFPC2 observations of three very luminous but
morphologically different giant HII regions (GHRs) in M101, NGC5461, NGC5462,
and NGC5471, in order to study cluster formation in GHRs. The measured (M_F547M
- M_F675W) colors and M_F547M magnitudes are used to determine the ages and
masses of the cluster candidates with M_F547M <= -9.0. NGC5461 is dominated by
a very luminous core, and has been suggested to host a super-star cluster
(SSC). Our observations show that it contains three R136-class clusters
superposed on a bright stellar background in a small region. This tight group
of clusters may dynamically evolve into an SSC in the future, and may appear
unresolved and be identified as an SSC at large distances, but at present
NGC5461 has no SSCs. NGC5462 has loosely distributed HII regions and clusters
without a prominent core. It has the largest number of cluster candidates among
the three GHRs, but most of them are faint and older than 10 Myr. NGC5471 has
multiple bright HII regions, and contains a large number of faint clusters
younger than 5 Myr. Two of the clusters in NGC5471 are older than R136, but
just as luminous; they may be the most massive clusters in the three GHRs. The
fraction of stars formed in massive clusters is estimated from the clusters'
contribution to the total stellar continuum emission and a comparison of the
ionizing power of the clusters to the ionizing requirement of the associated
HII regions. Both estimates show that <~ 50% of massive stars are formed in
massive clusters. The cluster luminosity functions (CLFs) of the three GHRs
show different slopes. NGC5462 has the steepest CLF and the most loosely
distributed interstellar gas, qualitatively consistent with the hypothesis that
massive clusters are formed in high-pressure interstellar environments.Comment: 36 pages (figures not included), 16 figures (3 of them are color

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of ROTC Army Cadet Exercise Training for the Army Combat Fitness Test
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(4): 172-182, 2024. The Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) is used to evaluate the fitness level of potential Cadets for military readiness. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the exercise training program implemented by an Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program to gauge the performance metrics of the ACFT. METHODS: Twenty-six student Cadets of the ROTC at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) program participated in the study. Over an 8-month period, the ROTC Cadets trained on campus three days per week. Training was performed in a circuit training format and each participant cycled through each of the four training stations (Strength, Conditioning, Core, and Endurance) for 15 minutes each session (for a total training time of 60 minutes). Each Cadet had body mass and body composition assessed as well as each component of the ACFT [maximum dead lift (MDL), standing power throw (SPT), hand release push-up (HRP), sprint-drag-carry (SDC), leg tuck/plank (LTK/PLK), and 2-mile run (2MR)]. Each variable was evaluated at three time points (pre-, mid-, and post-training program). RESULTS: There was a significant difference in the 2MR score between time points [F(2,50) = 4.530, p = .016, = 0.153] with a significant difference between time point at pre- and post-training (p = .02). No other variables displayed a significant change: body mass (p = .741), body fat percentage (p = .238), MDL (p = .061), SPT (p = .308), HRP (p = .126), SDC (p = 0.132), LTK/PLK (p = 0.583). CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that the short-term training program used improves 2MR, but not other components of the ACFT over the course of an academic year

An autosomal recessive variant in \u3ci\u3ePYGM\u3c/i\u3e causes myophosphorylase deficiency in Red Angus composite cattle
Background Between 2020 and 2022, eight calves in a Nebraska herd (composite Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh) displayed exercise intolerance during forced activity. In some cases, the calves collapsed and did not recover. Available sire pedigrees contained a paternal ancestor within 2–4 generations in all affected calves. Pedigrees of the calves’ dams were unavailable, however, the cows were ranch-raised and retained from prior breeding seasons, where bulls used for breeding occasionally had a common ancestor. Therefore, it was hypothesized that a de novo autosomal recessive variant was causative of exercise intolerance in these calves.
Results A genome-wide association analysis utilizing SNP data from 6 affected calves and 715 herd mates, followed by whole-genome sequencing of 2 affected calves led to the identification of a variant in the gene PYGM (BTA29:g.42989581G \u3e A). The variant, confirmed to be present in the skeletal muscle transcriptome, was predicted to produce a premature stop codon (p.Arg650*). The protein product of PYGM, myophosphorylase, breaks down glycogen in skeletal muscle. Glycogen concentrations were fluorometrically assayed as glucose residues demonstrating significantly elevated glycogen concentrations in affected calves compared to cattle carrying the variant and to wildtype controls. The absence of the PYGM protein product in skeletal muscle was confirmed by immunohistochemistry and label-free quantitative proteomics analysis; muscle degeneration was confirmed in biopsy and necropsy samples. Elevated skeletal muscle glycogen persisted after harvest, resulting in a high pH and dark-cutting beef, which is negatively perceived by consumers and results in an economic loss to the industry. Carriers of the variant did not exhibit differences in meat quality or any measures of animal well-being.
Conclusions Myophosphorylase deficiency poses welfare concerns for affected animals and negatively impacts the final product. The association of the recessive genotype with dark-cutting beef further demonstrates the importance of genetics to not only animal health but to the quality of their product. Although cattle heterozygous for the variant may not immediately affect the beef industry, identifying carriers will enable selection and breeding strategies to prevent the production of affected calves
Zircon ages in granulite facies rocks: decoupling from geochemistry above 850 °C?
Granulite facies rocks frequently show a large spread in their zircon ages, the interpretation of which raises questions: Has the isotopic system been disturbed? By what process(es) and conditions did the alteration occur? Can the dates be regarded as real ages, reflecting several growth episodes? Furthermore, under some circumstances of (ultra-)high-temperature metamorphism, decoupling of zircon U–Pb dates from their trace element geochemistry has been reported. Understanding these processes is crucial to help interpret such dates in the context of the P–T history. Our study presents evidence for decoupling in zircon from the highest grade metapelites (> 850 °C) taken along a continuous high-temperature metamorphic field gradient in the Ivrea Zone (NW Italy). These rocks represent a well-characterised segment of Permian lower continental crust with a protracted high-temperature history. Cathodoluminescence images reveal that zircons in the mid-amphibolite facies preserve mainly detrital cores with narrow overgrowths. In the upper amphibolite and granulite facies, preserved detrital cores decrease and metamorphic zircon increases in quantity. Across all samples we document a sequence of four rim generations based on textures. U–Pb dates, Th/U ratios and Ti-in-zircon concentrations show an essentially continuous evolution with increasing metamorphic grade, except in the samples from the granulite facies, which display significant scatter in age and chemistry. We associate the observed decoupling of zircon systematics in high-grade non-metamict zircon with disturbance processes related to differences in behaviour of non-formula elements (i.e. Pb, Th, U, Ti) at high-temperature conditions, notably differences in compatibility within the crystal structure
Results from the Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (SuperCDMS) experiment at Soudan
We report the result of a blinded search for Weakly Interacting Massive
Particles (WIMPs) using the majority of the SuperCDMS Soudan dataset. With an
exposure of 1690 kg days, a single candidate event is observed, consistent with
expected backgrounds. This analysis (combined with previous Ge results) sets an
upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP--nucleon cross section of () cm at 46 GeV/. These results set the
strongest limits for WIMP--germanium-nucleus interactions for masses 12
