    Linking personality to cultural intelligence : an interactive effect of openness and agreeableness

    The personality trait of openness is generally believed to influence an individual's cultural intelligence, which is an ability to deal effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds. This study examines whether a relationship between the two depends on the individual's degree of agreeableness, a personality trait important for building interpersonal relationships. Data collected from 244 international professionals shows that openness is positively related to three facets of cultural intelligence when agreeableness is high, but not when agreeableness is low. The findings suggest that research on personality and cultural intelligence would benefit from an interactive approach, and that assessment, selection and development of international talents should consider personality traits not in isolation, but in concert

    Sexual decision making in the absence of choice: The African American female dating experience.

    Although links between low mate availability and increased HIV and STI risk for African American women have been documented in the literature, we know little about the impact of limited mate choices on the quality of relationships between Black men and women and how these relationship dynamics impact risk for young Black women. We conducted a qualitative study with African American female young adults (N=12) to explore the perceived impact of structural forces on African American female young adults’ dating and sexual behavior. Participants reported (1) perceptions of Black men as untrustworthy and manipulative, (2) the limited and often negative roles for Black men in the larger Black community, and (3) heterosexual relationships in the Black community as increasingly influenced by economics and commerce. Recommendations for HIV prevention interventions that include micro and macro level approaches are discussed

    When do global leaders learn best to develop cultural intelligence? An investigation of the moderating role of experiential learning style

    Cultural intelligence is believed to be an important quality for global leaders. To understand how this quality can be developed from international experience, our study employs experiential learning theory to analyze the learning process. We hypothesize that the extent to which the length of overseas work experience contributes to the development of cultural intelligence varies depending on the executives' learning styles. Analyses of data collected from 294 international executives and graduate business students in China and Ireland indicated that the positive relationship between the length of overseas experience and cultural intelligence is strengthened when global executives have a divergent learning style, not when they have an assimilative, convergent, or accommodative learning style

    Weather research requirements to improve space launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and NASA Kennedy Space Center

    Weather has a large affect on operations at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) and NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Weather is the leading source of scrubs and delays to space launch from CCAFS/KSC. Weather has an even larger impact on ground processing as space launch vehicles and payloads are prepared in the months before space launch. Many of those operations are very sensitive to weather. In addition, the weather in Florida is notoriously difficult to predict, especially during the summer when rapid deep convection can occur in minutes. Finally, the weather can be extremely subtle in this area during summer, e.g. exceedingly weak low-level boundaries usually determine where thunderstorms form. The Air Force 45th Weather Squadron (45WS) provides comprehensive weather support to CCAFS/KSC. The 45WS uses one of the most dense and unique suite of weather sensors in operational meteorology to provide that weather support. The 45 WS has an active program of facilitating research and transitioning that research into operations. These efforts include working with universities, government agencies, and contractors. Of special note is NASA’s Applied Meteorology Unit, a NASA funded organization that performs technology transition to improve weather support to America’s space program. There are many areas of research that would help 45WS improve their weather support: lightning cessation, lightning onset, lightning detection/warnings/reports, convective winds, elevated peak winds in winter, and many others. The 45WS especially wants research to improve applications of two tools: local numerical models and dual polarization radar.
