The recording industry, in a flurry to protect its copyrighted material, has waged an all-out battle against the dot-coms for the future of copyrighted music on the Internet. Since A&M Records, along with several other labels which comprise the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), filed suit against Napster, emotions have run high in the online community. Some have heralded this technology as a much-needed alternative to the strangling grasp of the major record labels; others view it as blatant theft of property. Retrospective cohort study of the South Tyneside Exercise Referral scheme 2009-2014: Predictors of dropout and barriers to adherence
Background: Exercise Referral Schemes (ERS) are a prevalent method of increasing physical activity levels. However, they suffer from participant dropout and research predicting dropout or barriers to adherence is limited. This study aimed to focus upon the effect of referral characteristics on dropout, dropout predictors and whether self-reported barriers to exercise predict dropout.
Methods: ERS data from 2009-2014 were retrieved for analysis. Chi squared and t-tests were used to investigate differences between referral characteristics, and logistic regression used to investigate dropout predictors.
Results: Of 6894 participants, 37.8% (n=2608) dropped out within 6 weeks and 50.03% (n=3449) by the final 12th week. More males adhered (p<0.001) with dropouts being significantly younger (p<0.001). Dropout predictors were smoking (OR=1.58, 95% CI:1.29-1.93) or being a Tier 3 referral (OR=1.47, 95% CI:1.25-1.73). Increasing age (OR=0.98, 95% CI:0.98-0.99), drinking alcohol (OR=0.82, 95% CI:0.71-0.95), secondary care referrals (OR=0.68, 95% CI:0.52-0.90), having a lack of motivation (OR=0.81, 95% CI:0.69-0.95), or a lack of childcare (OR=0.69, 95% CI:0.50-0.95) decreased the likelihood of dropout.
Conclusion: ERS dropout continues to be problematic. Smoking and having moderate-high comorbidities predicted dropout. Increasing age and patient-reported barriers of a lack of time or childcare decreased dropout risk. The reasons for dropout require further investigation
Copper mediated polymerization without external deoxygenation or oxygen scavengers
Overcoming the challenge of rigorous deoxygenation in copper mediated controlled radical polymerization processes (e.g. ATRP), we report a simple Cu(0)‐RDRP system in the absence of external additives (e.g. reducing agents, enzymes etc.). By simply adjusting the headspace of the reaction vessel, a wide range of monomers, namely acrylates, methacrylates, acrylamides and styrene, can be polymerized in a controlled manner yielding polymers with low dispersities, near‐quantitative conversions and high end group fidelity. Significantly, this approach is scalable (~ 125 g), tolerant to elevated temperatures, compatible with both organic and aqueous media and does not rely on external stimuli which may limit the monomer pool. The robustness and versatility of this methodology is further demonstrated by the applicability to a number of other copper mediated techniques including conventional ATRP and light‐mediated approaches
The characterization and manipulation of the bacterial microbiome of the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni
BACKGROUND: In North America, ticks are the most economically impactful vectors of human and animal pathogens. The Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni (Acari: Ixodidae), transmits Rickettsia rickettsii and Anaplasma marginale to humans and cattle, respectively. In recent years, studies have shown that symbiotic organisms are involved in a number of biochemical and physiological functions. Characterizing the bacterial microbiome of D. andersoni is a pivotal step towards understanding symbiont-host interactions. FINDINGS: In this study, we have shown by high-throughput sequence analysis that the composition of endosymbionts in the midgut and salivary glands in adult ticks is dynamic over three generations. Four Proteobacteria genera, Rickettsia, Francisella, Arsenophonus, and Acinetobacter, were identified as predominant symbionts in these two tissues. Exposure to therapeutic doses of the broad-spectrum antibiotic, oxytetracycline, affected both proportions of predominant genera and significantly reduced reproductive fitness. Additionally, Acinetobacter, a free-living ubiquitous microbe, invaded the bacterial microbiome at different proportions based on antibiotic treatment status suggesting that microbiome composition may have a role in susceptibility to environmental contaminants. CONCLUSIONS: This study characterized the bacterial microbiome in D. andersoni and determined the generational variability within this tick. Furthermore, this study confirmed that microbiome manipulation is associated with tick fitness and may be a potential method for biocontrol
HI Clouds in the M81 Filament as Dark Matter Minihalos--A Phase-Space Mismatch
Cosmological galaxy formation models predict the existence of dark matter
minihalos surrounding galaxies and in filaments connecting groups of galaxies.
The more massive of these minihalos are predicted to host HI gas that should be
detectable by current radio telescopes such as the GBT. We observed the region
including the M81/M82 and NGC 2403 galaxy groups, searching for observational
evidence of an HI component associated with dark matter halos within the "M81
Filament", using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). The map covers
an 8.7 degree x 21.3 degree (480 kpc x 1.2 Mpc) region centered between the
M81/M82 and NGC 2403 galaxy groups. Our observations cover a wide velocity
range, from -890 to 1320 km/s, which spans much of the range predicted by
cosmological N-body simulations for dark matter minihalo velocities. Our search
is not complete in the velocity range -210 to 85 km/s, containing Galactic
emission and the HVC Complex A. For an HI cloud at the distance of M81, with a
size < 10 kpc, our average 5-sigma mass detection limit is 3.2 x 10^6 M_Sun,
for a linewidth of 20 km/s. We compare our observations to two large
cosmological N-body simulations and find that the simulation predicts a
significantly greater number of detectable minihalos than are found in our
observations, and that the simulated minihalos do not match the phase space of
observed HI clouds. These results place strong constraints on the HI gas that
can be associated with dark-matter halos. Our observations indicate that the
majority of extragalactic HI clouds with a mass greater than 10^6 M_Sun are
