    American Generation Y and The Hotel of 2030

    The Baby Boomer generation, once the largest, most important consumer base and leader in purchasing power, is entering retirement (Sherman, 2008). Now an aging generation, the Boomers, are slowly losing their hold on the attention of the hospitality industry. The Boomers are quickly being eclipsed by their children and grandchildren as the largest market population and the biggest spenders within America with over 73 million or 26% of the total US population belonging to this demographic (Nusair, Parsa, & Cobanoglu, 2011). Much like the Baby Boomers, this demographic, known as primarily as Generation Y (Gen Y) or “Echo-Boomers” due to the great impact that they will have on society and business as the Baby Boomers did; Gen Y will slowly become the focus of many revenue managers, general managers, and industry executives (Agarwal, 2009). It is this generation’s opinion that will most likely determine the success and evolution of their business for decades to come, setting the tone for future generations. Many studies are starting to come about in response to this very fact. By the year 2030, Gen Y will make up 34% of the US population with many of them at the pinnacle of their purchasing power (Nusair et al., 2011)

    Device-to-Device Communications in the Millimeter Wave Band: A Novel Distributed Mechanism

    In spite of its potential advantages, the large-scale implementation of the device-to-device (D2D) communications has yet to be realized, mainly due to severe interference and lack of enough bandwidth in the microwave (μ\muW) band. Recently, exploiting the millimeter wave (mmW) band for D2D communications has attracted considerable attention as a potential solution to these challenges. However, its severe sensitivity to blockage along with its directional nature make the utilization of the mmW band a challenging task as it requires line-of-sight (LOS) link detection and careful beam alignment between the D2D transceivers. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed mechanism which enables the D2D devices to discover unblocked LOS links for the mmW band communication. Moreover, as such LOS links are not always available, the proposed mechanism allows the D2D devices to switch to the μ\muW band if necessary. In addition, the proposed mechanism detects the direction of the LOS links to perform the beam alignment. We have used tools from stochastic geometry to evaluate the performance of the proposed mechanism in terms of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) coverage probability. The performance of the proposed algorithm is then compared to the one of the single band (i.e., μ\muW/mmW) communication.     A variety of measures such as real output, retail receipts, and personal incomes show how the borderplex economy continues to expand (Table 1). Although employment growth is expected to subside, local labor market strength will be sufficiently robust to hold the El Paso unemployment rate well below its 32-year average of greater than 10 percent. Similarly, even though residential construction activity is expected to moderate slightly, overall housing activity is projected to remain high by historical standards. Expansion at Fort Bliss is the source for much of the heightened business activity as the arrivals of new troops translate into greater demand for housing, retail, and other services. By 2008, more than 13 thousand businesses are expected to be registered in El Paso. Per capita personal income is projected to exceed $26,200 that year.     There is comparatively little empirical evidence regarding the accuracy of regional housing sector forecasts. Much of the recent analysis conducted for this topic is developed for housing starts and indicates a relatively poor track record. This study examines residential real estate forecasts previously published for El Paso, TX using a structural econometric model. Model coverage is much broader than just starts.     A Transcendental Phenomenological Study that Examines African American Male Students\u27 Perception of Factors that Contribute to Academic Success at a Four-Year College

    The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to examine African American males’ perceptions of factors contributing to academic success. The central research question that guided this study is as follows: What factors do African American male students perceive as contributing to their academic success in attaining a four-year college degree? The information in this study could provide knowledge to other African American males, their families, and teachers regarding how these men could experience the same academic success as the participants. The participants consisted of 14 African American males from East Tennessee who graduated from a four-year college. The theories guiding this study are Oghu’s (1986) theory of racial identity development, Bandura’s (1977) social cognitive theory, Vygotsky’s (1962) sociocultural theory, and Bourdieu’s (1979) cultural/social capital theory. Data was collected through individual interviews, a focus group, and a personal narrative from the men participating in the study. The data collected during these interactions was analyzed, and the information that was gathered from this analysis was then separated into meaning and unit themes. These themes were then synthesized into a description of the experiences of the individuals. Once this description was formed, it was used to construct a description of the meaning and essence of the participants’ experiences regarding this study (Moustakas, 1994).     Source-to-Source Transformations for Parallel Optimizations in STAPL

    Programs that use the STAPL C++ parallel programming library express their control and data flow explicitly through the use of skeletons. Skeletons can be simple parallel operations like map and reduce, or the result of composing several skeletons. Composition is implemented by tracking the dependencies among individual data elements in the STAPL runtime system. However, the operations and dependencies within a compose skeleton can be determined at compile time from the C++ abstract syntax tree. This enables the use of source-to-source transformations to fuse the composed skeletons. Transformations can also be used to replace skeletons entirely with equivalent code. Both transformations greatly reduce STAPL runtime overhead, and zip fusion also allows a compiler to optimize the work functions as a single unit. We present a Clang compiler plugin and wrapper that automatically perform these transformations, and demonstrate its ability to improve performance
