A P-Functionalized [3]Ferrocenophane with a Dynamic SPS-Bridge
Ferrocene-1,1 '-dithiol reacts with PCl3 and P(NMe2)(3) to give [3]ferrocenophanes with SPS-ansa-bridges comprising potentially reactive P-Cl and P-N bonds at the central bridge atom. The products were characterized by NMR data and single-crystal XRD studies. The P-chloro-derivative exists both in the solid state and in solution as a mixture of two energetically nearly degenerate conformers with different stereochemical disposition of the ansa-bridge. Activation parameters for the dynamic equilibration between both isomers in solution were determined by dynamic NMR spectroscopy. Computational studies suggest that the isomerization proceeds via a torsional motion of the bridging SPS-unit rather than via configuration inversion at the phosphorus atom.Peer reviewe
Relationships between renewable energy and the prevalence of morbidity in the countries of the European Union: A panel regression approach
The main objective of the presented study was to examine the associations between the use of renewable energy sources in selected sectors (transport, electricity, heating, and cooling) and the prevalence of selected groups of diseases in the European Union, with an emphasis on the application of statistical methods considering the structure of data. The analyses included data on 27 countries of the European Union from 2010 to 2019 published in the Eurostat database and the Global Burden of Disease Study. Panel regression models (pooling model, fixed (within) effects model, random effects model) were primarily used in analytical procedures, in which a panel variable was represented by countries. In most cases, positive and significant associations between the use of renewable energy sources and the prevalence of diseases were confirmed. The results of panel regression models could be generally interpreted as meaning that renewable energy sources are associated with the prevalence of diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and kidney diseases, digestive diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, neoplasms, sense organ diseases, and skin and subcutaneous diseases at a significance level (α) of 0.05 and lower. These findings could be explained by the awareness of the health problem and the response in the form of preference for renewable energy sources. Regarding statistical methods used for country data or for data with a specific structure, it is recommended to use the methods that take this structure into account. The absence of these methods could lead to misleading conclusions. © 2021 by the authors. Long-term photometric monitoring of RR Lyr stars in M3
The period-change behaviour of 134 RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster
Messier 3 (M3) is investigated on the ~120-year time base of the photometric
observations. The mean period-change rates (\beta \approx 0.01 d Myr^-1) of the
subsamples of variables exhibiting the most regular behaviour are in good
agreement with theoretical expectations based on Horizontal-Branch stellar
evolution models. However, a large fraction of variables show period changes
that contradict the evolutionary expectations. Among the 134 stars studied, the
period-change behaviour of only 54 variables is regular (constant or linearly
changing), slight irregularities are superimposed on the regular variations in
23 cases and the remaining 57 stars display irregular period variations. The
light curve of ~50 per cent of the RRab stars is not stable, i.e., these
variables exhibit Blazhko modulation. The large fraction of variables with
peculiar behaviour (showing light-curve modulation and/or irregular O-C
variation) indicate that, probably, variables with regular period changes
incompatible with their evolutionary stages also could display some kind of
instability of the pulsation light curve and/or period, but the available
observations have not disclosed it yet. The temporal appearence of the Blazhko
effect in some stars, and the 70-90 years long regular changes preceded or
followed by irregular, rapid changes of the pulsation period in some cases
support this hypothesis.

Adaptation and application of the large LAERTES-EU regional climate model ensemble for modeling hydrological extremes: a pilot study for the Rhine basin
Enduring and extensive heavy precipitation events associated with widespread river floods are among the main natural hazards affecting central Europe. Since such events are characterized by long return periods, it is difficult to adequately quantify their frequency and intensity solely based on the available observations of precipitation. Furthermore, long-term observations are rare, not homogeneous in space and time, and thus not suitable to running hydrological models (HMs) with respect to extremes. To overcome this issue, we make use of the recently introduced LAERTES-EU (LArge Ensemble of Regional climaTe modEl Simulations for EUrope) data set, which is an ensemble of regional climate model simulations providing over 12 000 simulated years. LAERTES-EU is adapted for use in an HM to calculate discharges for large river basins by applying quantile mapping with a parameterized gamma distribution to correct the mainly positive bias in model precipitation. The Rhine basin serves as a pilot area for calibration and validation. The results show clear improvements in the representation of both precipitation (e.g., annual cycle and intensity distributions) and simulated discharges by the HM after the bias correction. Furthermore, the large size of LAERTES-EU also improves the statistical representativeness for high return values above 100 years of discharges. We conclude that the bias-corrected LAERTES-EU data set is generally suitable for hydrological applications and posterior risk analyses. The results of this pilot study will soon be applied to several large river basins in central Europe
The pitfalls of plural valuation
This paper critically examines the current political context in which valuation studies of nature are undertaken. It challenges the belief that somehow, more and technically better valuation will drive the societal change toward more just and sustainable futures. Instead, we argue that current and proposed valuation practices risk to continue to overrepresent the values of those who hold power and dominate the valuation space, and to perpetuate the discrimination of the views and values of nondominant stakeholders. In tackling this politically sensitive issue, we define a political typology of valuations, making explicit the roles of power and discrimination. This is done to provide valuation professionals and other actors with a simple framework to determine if valuation actions and activities are constructive, inclusive, resolve injustices and enable systemic change, or rather entrench the status quo or aggravate existing injustices. The objective is to buttress actors in their decisions to support, accept, improve, oppose, or reject such valuations
Effect of phosphorus supply on root traits of two Brassica oleracea L. genotypes
BACKGROUND: Phosphorus (P) deficiency limits crop production worldwide. Crops differ in their ability to acquire and utilise the P available. The aim of this study was to determine root traits (root exudates, root system architecture (RSA), tissue-specific allocation of P, and gene expression in roots) that (a) play a role in P-use efficiency and (b) contribute to large shoot zinc (Zn) concentration in Brassica oleracea. RESULTS: Two B. oleracea accessions (var. sabellica C6, a kale, and var. italica F103, a broccoli) were grown in a hydroponic system or in a high-throughput-root phenotyping (HTRP) system where they received Low P (0.025 mM) or High P (0.25 mM) supply for 2weeks. In hydroponics, root and shoot P and Zn concentrations were measured, root exudates were profiled using both Fourier-Transform-Infrared spectroscopy and gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry and previously published RNAseq data from roots was re-examined. In HTRP experiments, RSA (main and lateral root number and lateral root length) was assessed and the tissue-specific distribution of P was determined using micro-particle-induced-X-ray emission. The C6 accession had greater root and shoot biomass than the F103 accession, but the latter had a larger shoot P concentration than the C6 accession, regardless of the P supply in the hydroponic system. The F103 accession had a larger shoot Zn concentration than the C6 accession in the High P treatment. Although the F103 accession had a larger number of lateral roots, which were also longer than in the C6 accession, the C6 accession released a larger quantity and number of polar compounds than the F103 accession. A larger number of P-responsive genes were found in the Low P treatment in roots of the F103 accession than in roots of the C6 accession. Expression of genes linked with "phosphate starvation" was up-regulated, while those linked with iron homeostasis were down-regulated in the Low P treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The results illustrate large within-species variability in root acclimatory responses to P supply in the composition of root exudates, RSA and gene expression, but not in P distribution in root cross sections, enabling P sufficiency in the two B. oleracea accessions studied
Modelling of Multi-Agent Systems: Experiences with Membrane Computing and Future Challenges
Formal modelling of Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) is a challenging task due to
high complexity, interaction, parallelism and continuous change of roles and
organisation between agents. In this paper we record our research experience on
formal modelling of MAS. We review our research throughout the last decade, by
describing the problems we have encountered and the decisions we have made
towards resolving them and providing solutions. Much of this work involved
membrane computing and classes of P Systems, such as Tissue and Population P
Systems, targeted to the modelling of MAS whose dynamic structure is a
prominent characteristic. More particularly, social insects (such as colonies
of ants, bees, etc.), biology inspired swarms and systems with emergent
behaviour are indicative examples for which we developed formal MAS models.
Here, we aim to review our work and disseminate our findings to fellow
researchers who might face similar challenges and, furthermore, to discuss
important issues for advancing research on the application of membrane
computing in MAS modelling.Comment: In Proceedings AMCA-POP 2010, arXiv:1008.314
Pneumatic bellows actuated parallel platform control with adjustable stiffness using a hybrid feed-forward and variable gain integral controller
Redundant cascade manipulators actuated by pneumatic bellows actuators are passively
compliant, rugged and dexterous, making them exceptionally well suited for application in agricul ture. Unfortunately, the bellows are notoriously difficult to precisely position. This paper presents a
novel control algorithm for the control of a parallel platform actuated by pneumatic bellows, which
serves as a module of a cascade manipulator. The algorithm combines a feed-forward controller and
a variable-gain I-controller. The mathematical model of the module, which serves as the feed-forward
controller, was created by applying two simple regression steps on experimentally acquired data.
The gain of the I-controller is linearly dependent on the total reference error, thereby addressing the
prevalent problem of “a slow response or excessive overshoot”, which, in the described case, the sim ple combination of a feed-forward and constant-gain I-controller tends to suffer from. The proposed
algorithm was experimentally verified and its performance was compared with two controllers: an
ANFIS controller and a constant gain PID controller. The proposed controller has outperformed the
PID controller in the three calculated criteria: IAE, ISE and ITAE by more than 40%. The controller
was also tested under dynamic loading conditions, showing promising results.Web of Science1324art. no. 1326
Assessing the Contribution of Data Mining Methods to Avoid Aircraft Run-Off from the Runway to Increase the Safety and Reduce the Negative Environmental Impacts
The Single Europe Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) program develops and implements innovative technological and operational solutions to modernize European air traffic management and to eliminate the negative environmental impacts of aviation activity. This article presents our developments within the SESAR Solution &ldquo
Safety Support Tools for Avoiding Runway Excursions&rdquo
. This SESAR Solution aims to mitigate the risk of runway excursion, to optimize airport operation management by decreasing the number of runway inspections, to make chemical treatment effective with respect to the environment, and to increase resilience, efficiency and safety in adverse weather situations. The proposed approach is based on the enhancement of runway surface condition awareness by integrating data from various sources. Dangerous windy conditions based on Lidar measurements are also discussed as another relevant factor in relation to runway excursions. The paper aims to explore four different data mining methods to obtain runway conditions from the available input data sources, examines their performance and discusses their pros and cons in comparison with a rule-based algorithm approach. The output of the SESAR Solution is developed in compliance with the new Global Reporting Format of the International Civil Aviation Organization for runway condition description to be valid from 2020. This standard is expected to provide concerned stakeholders with more precise information to enhance flight safety and environmental protection.
