    Industrial ecology (IE) intends to improve industrial processes in a way that the society benefits with as less damage of the environment as possible. As a concept it gives responses to environmental problems in the field of industry and technology and aims to enable management of human activity on a sustainable basis by minimizing energy and materials usage, ensuring acceptable quality of life for people, minimizing negative ecological impacts of human activity to levels natural systems can sustain, and maintaining economic viability of systems for industry, trade and commerce. Industrial ecology offers a systems methodology for the analysis of material and energy flows. Thereby an investigation of the connection between humans and nature, placing human activity in the larger context of the biophysical environment from which we obtain resources and into which we put our wastes is of essential importance. Since industrial ecology has been developed by engineers and natural scientists an ethical reflection of the concept is often neglected. Ubiquitarily manifests however in anthropocentric assertions such as harmonizing the contradiction between nature and culture with scientific expertise, appropriate technology and socio-economic management. This paper interprets industrial ecology ethically by relating values to specific characteristics of the systems methodology. This interpretation should provide a starting point for a debate within the field out from the concepts’ own epistemological premises. The presumption for the value of this endeavour is that industrial ecology is not morally “neutral” but possesses an implicit normative potential for the design of a possible sustainable world. Following the introduction, which presents the systems methodology as a core concept in industrial ecology, the second section gives an overview over main environmental ethics positions to prepare the ground for the argument that industrial ecology might benefit from considering a moderate biocentrism. Section three examines three epistemological characteristics of the systems methodology: interdependence, diversity and complexity and explores their relationship to values in ethics: responsibility, openness and correspondence. Conclusively, the fourth section gives some reasons why a moderate biocentrism supplementing anthropocentric positions is advantageous for IE and what benefits can be gained for research and practice in the field.Ekologia przemysłowa służy udoskonaleniu procesów przemysłowych w sposób, który przyniesie korzyści społeczeństwu, jak najmniej przy tym szkodząc środowisku. Koncepcja ekologii przemysłowej odpowiada na problemy środowiska w dziedzinach przemysłu i technologii oraz ma umożliwić zrównoważone zarządzanie działalnością człowieka poprzez zmniejszanie zużycia energii i surowców, zapewnianie odpowiedniej jakości życia, zmniejszanie negatywnych skutków działalności człowieka, a także utrzymywanie rentowności systemów dla przemysłu, handlu i rzemiosła. Ekologia przemysłowa oferuje metodologię systemów potrzebną do analizy przepływów materiałów oraz energii. Dlatego tez istotne znaczenie ma badanie związku między człowiekiem i przyrodą, działalności człowieka widzianej w szerszym kontekście środowiska biofizycznego, z którego pobieramy zasoby i do którego wyrzucamy nasze odpady. Ponieważ ekologia przemysłowa została rozwinięta przez inżynierów i przyrodników, etyczny aspekt tej koncepcji jest często zaniedbywany. Odnaleźć go można jednak w powszechnie używanych antropocentrycznych twierdzeniach np. o łagodzeniu sprzeczności pomiędzy naturą i kulturą poprzez ekspertyzę naukową, odpowiednią technologię oraz zarządzanie społeczno-ekonomiczne. Niniejszy artykuł pokazuje ekologię przemysłową w świetle etycznym poprzez odniesienie wartości do specyficznych cech metodologii systemów. Ekologia przemysłowa nie jest moralnie „neutralna”, lecz posiada ukryty potencjał normatywny, umożliwiający zaprojektowanie zrównoważonego świata. Wstęp do niniejszego artykułu przedstawia metodologię systemów jako podstawowe pojęcie w ekologii przemysłowej. Drugi paragraf zawiera przegląd podstawowych trendów w etyce środowiskowej, pokazując związek ekologii przemysłowej z umiarkowanym biocentryzmem. Trzeci eksploruje trzy epistemologiczne cechy metodologii systemów: współzależność, różnorodność i złożoność, a także ich stosunek do wartości w etyce, takich jak odpowiedzialność, otwartość i współistnienie. Natomiast czwarty podaje powody uzasadniające dlaczego umiarkowany biocentryzm, jako dodatek do antropocentrycznego stanowiska, jest pozytywny dla ekologii przemysłowej

    Von Heuerbaasen und Landhaien: Flensburger Heuerstellen um 1900

    "For centuries, the hiring of seamen was a task traditionally dominated by private shipping masters, so-called Heuerbaase. The majority of these hiring agents were the keepers of inns or rooming houses who earned extra money with this lucrative sideline. Their business success was often attained at the cost of the employment-seeking seamen, who were entirely at the mercy of the Landhaie (land sharks), as the shipping masters were often called. In many cases, the system of private hiring agencies brought about grave social problems, which the seamen denounced more and more openly as the nineteenth century drew to a close. The article retraces the development of the hiring system around the turn of the century - 1900 - on the basis of the example of Flensburg. Insight is provided into circumstances that can be regarded as typical for port towns at that time and of that size in the North and Baltic Sea region. Individual shipping masters are introduced, and many of the difficulties facing both seamen and shipping companies of that time are illustrated with brief examples." (author's abstract

    "The biography of the first German woman to receive a master's certificate can justifiably be referred to as unusual. Annaliese Teetz, nee Sparbier, a teacher's daughter born in Hamburg in 1910, discovered her love for seafaring while studying at university. She started out working in the fishing industry for several years, then finally managed to enter the world of commercial navigation. Despite extreme difficulties caused by the authorities, she succeeded in gaining admission to navigation school, where she obtained the mate's certificate for distant trade (A5) in 1943. She was employed in coastal shipping until the end of the war, her last position in that context being that of captain on the coastal motor vessel NORD 28. After World War II she served various small shipping companies as a nautical officer, accompanied by her husband, the ship's engineer Ernst Teetz. When Annaliese Teetz decided to train for the master's certificate for distant trade in 1954, she was once again confronted with major obstacles. She nevertheless achieved her aim and continued to work for various shipping companies until 1968. Yet her dream of serving as the captain of a large, internationally operating vessel was never fulfilled. The scepticism towards women in this profession was still too great. Following her period of active seafaring service, Teetz worked as an elementary school teacher until retirement. As a member of the seamen's section of the DAG (German Employee's Association) she continued to support the interests of seafaring, concentrating specifically on the improvement of opportunities for women in this field. The dedicated 'seawoman' died in 1992 at the age of 82. She had worked in the area of 'Christian navigation' for altogether 38 years and succeeded in asserting her self in what even today is a decidedly masculine domain, a feat which must have seemed impossible. This accomplishment was surely due in great part to her unwavering tenacity and willingness to serve. Not until the end of the 1950s did a number of other women manage to establish themselves professionally in the area of navigation, primarily as radio operators. And only very recently have German shipping companies begun to place women in captain's positions." (author's abstract

    Krise und Konjunktur: die Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft von der Weltwirtschaftskrise bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges

    To be sure, the history of the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG; Flensburg Shipbuilding Company) has already been variously published, particularly in the 1980s and ‘90s. Those studies, however, were limited primarily to the context of shipbuilding itself and the presentation of the vessels constructed by the FSG. Far less attention was paid to economic and, above all, social aspects and interrelationships. This article takes a different approach. It focuses chiefly on the economic fate of this prestigious Flensburg enterprise in the context of the social and political framework conditions of the era in question. For the FSG, and indeed for all German shipbuilding enterprises, the period between the world wars was characterized by major upheavals which were the consequences of inflation and world depression. In response, the company management was called upon to develop new strategies for survival, entrepreneurial courage, fantasy and the willingness to take risks, economic farsightedness and, not least of all, a fine instinct for the political situation. The contribution retraces the company history from 1923 to the early 1950s. Based on surviving correspondence, business reports and other sources, it provides lively insights into the company’s efforts to defend itself against the threat of bankruptcy and hostile acquisition, master the political, economic and social challenges arising during the period of the "Third Reich" and Second World War, and finally, after 1945, starting out again from scratch. Extensive sources and pictorial material were evaluated for the analysis hereby submitted. Moreover, it proved possible to supplement that material with statements by witnesses to the historical events, who openly answered the author’s questions within the framework of various interviews carried out over a period of two years

    Migration cost optimization for service provider legacy network migration to software-defined IPv6 network

This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Self-Archiving.[EN] This paper studies a problem for seamless migration of legacy networks of Internet service providers to a software-defined networking (SDN)-based architecture along with the transition to the full adoption of the Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) connectivity. Migration of currently running legacy IPv4 networks into such new approaches requires either upgrades or replacement of existing networking devices and technologies that are actively operating. The joint migration to SDN and IPv6 network is considered to be vital in terms of migration cost optimization, skilled human resource management, and other critical factors. In this work, we first present the approaches of SDN and IPv6 migration in service providers' networks. Then, we present the common concerns of IPv6 and SDN migration with joint transition strategies so that the cost associated with joint migration is minimized to lower than that of the individual migration. For the incremental adoption of software-defined IPv6 (SoDIP6) network with optimum migration cost, a greedy algorithm is proposed based on optimal path and the customer priority.     Ceramide levels in blood plasma correlate with major depressive disorder severity and its neutralization abrogates depressive behavior in mice

    Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe disease of unknown pathogenesis that will affect ∼10% of people during their lifetime. Therapy for MDD requires prolonged treatment and often fails, predicating a need for novel treatment strategies. Here, we report increased ceramide levels in the blood plasma of MDD patients and in murine stress-induced models of MDD. These blood plasma ceramide levels correlated with the severity of MDD in human patients and were independent of age, sex, or body mass index. In addition, intravenous injection of anti-ceramide antibodies or neutral ceramidase rapidly abrogated stress-induced MDD, and intravenous injection of blood plasma from mice with MDD induced depression-like behavior in untreated mice, which was abrogated by ex vivo preincubation of the plasma with anti-ceramide antibodies or ceramidase. Mechanistically, we demonstrate that ceramide accumulated in endothelial cells of the hippocampus of stressed mice, evidenced by the quantitative measurement of ceramide in purified hippocampus endothelial cells. We found ceramide inhibited the activity of phospholipase D (PLD) in endothelial cells in vitro and in the hippocampus in vivo and thereby decreased phosphatidic acid in the hippocampus. Finally, we show intravenous injection of PLD or phosphatidic acid abrogated MDD, indicating the significance of this pathway in MDD pathogenesis. Our data indicate that ceramide controls PLD activity and phosphatidic acid formation in hippocampal endothelial cells and thereby mediates MDD. We propose that neutralization of plasma ceramide could represent a rapid-acting targeted treatment for MDD

    Antimicrobial effects of inhaled sphingosine against Pseudomonas aeruginosa in isolated ventilated and perfused pig lungs

    Background Ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) is a save way to verify performance of donor lungs prior to implantation. A major problem of lung transplantation is a donor-to-recipient-transmission of bacterial cultures. Thus, a broadspectrum anti-infective treatment with sphingosine in EVLP might be a novel way to prevent such infections. Sphingosine inhalation might provide a reliable anti-infective treatment option in EVLP. Here, antimicrobial potency of inhalative sphingosine in an infection EVLP model was tested. Methods A 3-hour EVLP run using pig lungs was performed. Bacterial infection was initiated 1-hour before sphingosine inhalation. Biopsies were obtained 60 and 120 min after infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Aliquots of broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) before and after inhalation of sphingosine were plated and counted, tissue samples were fixed in paraformaldehyde, embedded in paraffin and sectioned. Immunostainings were performed. Results Sphingosine inhalation in the setting of EVLP rapidly resulted in a 6-fold decrease of P. aeruginosa CFU in the lung (p = 0.016). We did not observe any negative side effects of sphingosine. Conclusion Inhalation of sphingosine induced a significant decrease of Pseudomonas aeruginosa at the epithelial layer of tracheal and bronchial cells. The inhalation has no local side effects in ex-vivo perfused and ventilated pig lungs

    Sphingosine as a New Antifungal Agent against Candida and Aspergillus spp.

    This study investigated whether sphingosine is effective as prophylaxis against Aspergillus spp. and Candida spp. In vitro experiments showed that sphingosine is very efficacious against A. fumigatus and Nakeomyces glabrataa (formerly named C. glabrata). A mouse model of invasive aspergillosis showed that sphingosine exerts a prophylactic effect and that sphingosine-treated animals exhibit a strong survival advantage after infection. Furthermore, mechanistic studies showed that treatment with sphingosine leads to the early depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm) and the generation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and to a release of cytochrome C within minutes, thereby presumably initiating apoptosis. Because of its very good tolerability and ease of application, inhaled sphingosine should be further developed as a possible prophylactic agent against pulmonary aspergillosis among severely immunocompromised patients

    Stress induces major depressive disorder by a neutral sphingomyelinase 2-mediated accumulation of ceramide-enriched exosomes in the blood plasma

    Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a very common, severe disease with a lifetime prevalence of ~ 10%. The pathogenesis of MDD is unknown and, unfortunately, therapy is often insufficient. We have previously reported that ceramide levels are increased in the blood plasma of patients with MDD and in mice with experimental MDD. Here, we demonstrate that ceramide-enriched exosomes in the blood plasma are increased in mice with stress-induced MDD. Genetic studies reveal that neutral sphingomyelinase 2 is required for the formation of ceramide-enriched exosomes in the blood plasma. Accordingly, induced deficiency of neutral sphingomyelinase 2 prevented mice from the development of stress-induced MDD. Intravenous injection of microparticles from mice with MDD or injection of ceramide-loaded exosomes induced MDD-like behavior in untreated mice, which was abrogated by ex vivo pre-incubation of purified exosomes with anti-ceramide antibodies or ceramidase. Mechanistically, injection of exosomes from mice with MDD or injection of ex vivo ceramide-loaded microparticles inhibited phospholipase D (PLD) in endothelial cells in vitro and in the hippocampus in vivo and thereby decreased phosphatidic acid in the hippocampus, which has been previously shown to mediate MDD by plasma ceramide. In summary, our data indicate that ceramide-enriched exosomes are released by neutral sphingomyelinase 2 into the blood plasma upon stress and mediate stress-induced MDD
