    Using the general equilibrium growth model to study great depressions: a reply to Temin

    Three of the arguments made by Temin (2008) in his review of Great Depressions of the Twentieth Century are demonstrably wrong: that the treatment of the data in the volume is cursory; that the definition of great depressions is too general and, in particular, groups slow growth experiences in Latin America in the 1980s with far more severe great depressions in Europe in the 1930s; and that the book is an advertisement for the real business cycle methodology. Without these three arguments — which are the results of obvious conceptual and arithmetical errors, including copying the wrong column of data from a source — his review says little more than that he does not think it appropriate to apply our dynamic general equilibrium methodology to the study of great depressions, and he does not like the conclusion that we draw: that a successful model of a great depression needs to be able to account for the effects of government policy on productivity.

    Flutter Clearance of the F-14A Variable-Sweep Transition Flight Experiment Airplane, Phase 2

    An F-14A aircraft was modified for use as the test-bed aircraft for the variable-sweep transition flight experiment (VSTFE) program. The VSTFE program was a laminar flow research program designed to measure the effects of wing sweep on laminar flow. The airplane was modified by adding an upper surface foam and fiberglass glove to the right wing. An existing left wing glove had been added for the previous phase of the program. Ground vibration and flight flutter testing were accomplished to verify the absence of aeroelastic instabilities within a flight envelope of Mach 0.9 or 450 knots, calibrated airspeed, whichever was less. Flight test data indicated satisfactory damping levels and trends for the elastic structural modes of the airplane. Ground vibration test data are presented along with in-flight frequency and damping estimates, time histories and power spectral densities of in-flight sensors, and pressure distribution data

    High surface temperatures and temperature gradients can affect the vibratory characteristics and stability of aircraft structures. Aircraft designers are relying more on finite-element model analysis methods to ensure sufficient vehicle structural dynamic stability throughout the desired flight envelope. Analysis codes that predict these thermal effects must be correlated and verified with experimental data. Experimental modal data for aluminum, titanium, and fiberglass plates heated at uniform, nonuniform, and transient heating conditions are presented. The data show the effect of heat on each plate's modal characteristics, a comparison of predicted and measured plate vibration frequencies, the measured modal damping, and the effect of modeling material property changes and thermal stresses on the accuracy of the analytical results at nonuniform and transient heating conditions

    The NASA Dryden Flight Research Facility performs ground vibration testing to assess the structural characteristics of new and modified research vehicles. This paper updates the research activities, techniques used, and experiences in applying this technology to aircraft since 1987. Test equipment, data analysis methods, and test procedures used for typical test programs are discussed. The data presented illustrate the use of modal test and analysis in flight research programs for a variety of aircraft. This includes a technique to acquire control surface free-play measurements on the X-31 airplane more efficiently, and to assess the effects of structural modifications on the modal characteristics of an F-18 aircraft. In addition, the status and results from current research activities are presented. These data show the effectiveness of the discrete modal filter as a preprocessor to uncouple response measurements into simple single-degree-of-freedom responses, a database for the comparison of different excitation methods on a JetStar airplane, and the effect of heating on modal frequency and damping

    Breeding range and abundance of White–winged Scoters (Melanitta fusca deglandi) have declined in northwestern North America. Hypotheses proposed to account for this trend are that survival and/or recruitment of females had declined. Thus, we used a reverse–time capture–recapture approach to directly estimate survival, seniority and capture probabilities for females of breeding age at Redberry Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada for 1975–1980 and 2000–2003. We also estimated population size of breeding females for 1975–1985 and 2000–2003 using capture–recapture data. Initially, this local population was in serious decline [95% CL ( ) = 0.89 ± 0.09], but has since stabilized and may be slowly increasing [95% CL ( ) = 1.07 ± 0.11]. This reversal in trajectory apparently resulted from increased recruitment rather than increased apparent survival. Importantly, recent recruitment of adult females appeared to be driven solely by immigration of adult females with no detectable in situ recruitment, suggesting a hypothesis that the local population is being rescued by females produced elsewhere.El rango reproductivo y la abundancia del negrón especulado (Melanitta fusca deglandi) han disminuido en la zona noroeste de América del Norte. La hipótesis propuesta para explicar esta tendencia es que se ha producido una disminución en la supervivencia y/o el reclutamiento de hembras. Por consiguiente, utilizamos un enfoque de captura–recaptura con el tiempo invertido para estimar directamente la supervivencia, la jerarquía y las probabilidades de captura de las hembras en edad reproductora del lago Redberry, Saskatchewan, Canadá, durante los periodos 1975–1980 y 2000– 2003. También estimamos el tamaño poblacional de las hembras reproductoras durante los periodos 1975–1985 y 2000–2003, mediante el empleo de datos de captura–recaptura. En un principio, esta población local experimentó una importante disminución [95% CL ( ) = 0,89 ± 0,09], pero posteriormente se estabilizó, y es posible que poco a poco vaya aumentando [95% CL ( ) = 1,07 ± 0,11]. Por lo visto, la inversión de esta trayectoria se produjo como consecuencia de un mayor reclutamiento, en lugar de una mayor supervivencia aparente. Es importante destacar que el reclutamiento reciente de hembras adultas parece haber obedecido exclusivamente a la migración de hembras adultas sin un reclutamiento detectable in situ, lo que sugiere la hipótesis de que la población local está siendo rescatada por hembras procedentes de otros lugares

    Signalling pathways and mechanistic cues highlighted by transcriptomic analysis of primordial, primary, and secondary ovarian follicles in domestic cat

    In vitro growth (IVG) of dormant primordial ovarian follicles aims to produce mature competent oocytes for assisted reproduction. Success is dependent on optimal in vitro conditions complemented with an understanding of oocyte and ovarian follicle development in vivo. Complete IVG has not been achieved in any other mammalian species besides mice. Furthermore, ovarian folliculogenesis remains sparsely understood overall. Here, gene expression patterns were characterised by RNA-sequencing in primordial (PrF), primary (PF), and secondary (SF) ovarian follicles from Felis catus (domestic cat) ovaries. Two major transitions were investigated: PrF-PF and PF-SF. Transcriptional analysis revealed a higher proportion in gene expression changes during the PrF-PF transition. Key influencing factors during this transition included the interaction between the extracellular matrix (ECM) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) along with nuclear components such as, histone HIST1H1T (H1.6). Conserved signalling factors and expression patterns previously described during mammalian ovarian folliculogenesis were observed. Species-specific features during domestic cat ovarian folliculogenesis were also found. The signalling pathway terms "PI3K-Akt", "transforming growth factor-beta receptor", "ErbB", and "HIF-1" from the functional annotation analysis were studied. Some results highlighted mechanistic cues potentially involved in PrF development in the domestic cat. Overall, this study provides an insight into regulatory factors and pathways during preantral ovarian folliculogenesis in domestic cat

    Long-term follow-up of patients with advanced ovarian cancer treated in randomised clinical trials.

    The data from two prospective randomised phase III trials that were initiated by the West Midlands Ovarian Cancer Study Group (WMOCSG) in 1981 and 1986, recruiting 167 and 195 patients respectively, have been pooled and the survival patterns of the 362 patients treated for advanced epithelial ovarian cancer within clinical trials in the West Midlands over the 10 year period (1981-91) have been explored. All patients had histologically proven epithelial ovarian cancer and all had residual disease after primary surgery, with the majority having stage III/IV disease. The primary treatment for all patients was debulking surgery followed by platinum-based chemotherapy. Eligible patients were further randomised to undergo a second debulking operation. The main end point, survival, was assessed using Kaplan-Meier curves and the log-rank test. A Cox proportional hazards model identified performance status (P = 0.002), residual disease (P = 0.005) and albumin level (P = 0.04) as independent prognostic factors. A multivariate model to predict survival curves for patients with the best and worst prognoses was developed with predicted 5 year survival of 30% and 3% for those in the best and worst prognostic groups respectively. The identification of clinical interventions to improve outcome is an urgent matter since the prognosis for patients with advanced ovarian cancer remains poor

    The ROTSE-III Robotic Telescope System

    The observation of a prompt optical flash from GRB990123 convincingly demonstrated the value of autonomous robotic telescope systems. Pursuing a program of rapid follow-up observations of gamma-ray bursts, the Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment (ROTSE) has developed a next-generation instrument, ROTSE-III, that will continue the search for fast optical transients. The entire system was designed as an economical robotic facility to be installed at remote sites throughout the world. There are seven major system components: optics, optical tube assembly, CCD camera, telescope mount, enclosure, environmental sensing & protection and data acquisition.     Regional increase in the expression of the BCAT proteins in Alzheimer's disease brain: Implications in glutamate toxicity

    BACKGROUNDThe human branched chain aminotransferases (hBCATm, mitochondrial and hBCATc, cytosolic) are major contributors to brain glutamate production. This excitatory neurotransmitter is thought to contribute to neurotoxicity in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) but the expression of hBCAT in this disease has not previously been investigated.OBJECTIVEThe objective of investigating hBCAT expression is to gain insight into potential metabolic pathways that may be dysregulated in AD brain, which would contribute to glutamate toxicity.METHODSWestern blot analysis and immunohistochemistry were used to determine the expression and localization of hBCAT in postmortem frontal and temporal cortex from AD and matched control brains.RESULTSWestern blot analysis demonstrated a significant regional increase in hBCATc expression in the hippocampus (↑ 36%; p-values of 0.012), with an increase of ↑ 160% reported for hBCATm in the frontal and temporal cortex (p-values = 4.22 × 10-4 and 2.79 × 10-5, respectively) in AD relative to matched controls, with evidence of post-translational modifications to hBCATm, more prominent in AD samples. Using immunohistochemistry, a significant increase in immunopositive labelling of hBCATc was observed in the CA1 and CA4 region of the hippocampus (p-values = 0.011 and 0.026, respectively) correlating with western blot analysis. Moreover, the level of hBCATm in the frontal and temporal cortex correlated significantly with disease severity, as indicated by Braak staging (p-values = 5.63 × 10-6 and 9.29 × 10-5, respectively).CONCLUSIONThe expression of the hBCAT proteins is significantly elevated in AD brain. This may modulate glutamate production and toxicity, and thereby play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease
