    Two-stage, low noise advanced technology fan. 4: Aerodynamic final report

    A two-stage research fan was tested to provide technology for designing a turbofan engine for an advanced, long range commercial transport having a cruise Mach number of 0.85 -0.9 and a noise level 20 EPNdB below current requirements. The fan design tip speed was 365.8m/sec (1200ft/sec);the hub/tip ratio was 0.4; the design pressure ratio was 1.9; and the design specific flow was 209.2 kg/sec/sq m(42.85lbm/sec/sq ft). Two fan-versions were tested: a baseline configuration, and an acoustically treated configuration with a sonic inlet device. The baseline version was tested with uniform inlet flow and with tip-radial and hub-radial inlet flow distortions. The baseline fan with uniform inlet flow attained an efficiency of 86.4% at design speed, but the stall margin was low. Tip-radial distortion increased stall margin 4 percentage points at design speed and reduced peak efficiency one percentage point. Hub-radial distortion decreased stall margin 4 percentage points at all speeds and reduced peak efficiency at design speed 8 percentage points. At design speed, the sonic inlet in the cruise position reduced stall margin one percentage point and efficiency 1.5 to 4.5 percentage points.     A two stage fan with a 1st-stage rotor design tip speed of 1450 ft/sec, a design pressure ratio of 2.8, and corrected flow of 184.2 lbm/sec was tested with axial skewed slots in the casings over the tips of both rotors. The variable stagger stators were set in the nominal positions. Casing treatment improved stall margin by nine percentage points at 70 percent speed but decreased stall margin, efficiency, and flow by small amounts at design speed. Treatment improved first stage performance at low speed only and decreased second stage performance at all operating conditions. Casing treatment did not affect the stall line with tip radially distorted flow but improved stall margin with circumferentially distorted flow. Casing treatment increased the attenuation for both types of inlet flow distortion

    A survey of nurses’ basic life support knowledge and training at a tertiary hospital

    Objective: Survival after cardiac arrest is related to time taken for resuscitation, and defibrillation, to commence. At many hospitals, the healthcare worker most likely to be present when a patient suffers a cardiac arrest is a nurse. This study was performed to assess BLS knowledge and training of nurses, and thus to determine whether further action is required to improve their BLS competency. Method: The study was a cross-sectional survey. A questionnaire was distributed, on one day, to nurses in the wards, out-patient-departments and theatres. Completion of the form was voluntary and confidential. The forms were all returned that day. Results: Questionnaires were completed by 338 of the 405 nursing personnel on duty that day (83.4% response rate). Administrators and student nurses were excluded as well as incomplete questionnaires , leaving a final sample size of 286 nurses. A pass mark of 80% was achieved by 11% of responders. Training in BLS had been available for 77.5% of nurses and of these 93.1% had attended a course, 60.9% within the last year. Training in the use of a defibrillator had not been received by 32% of nurses and there was generally a poor understanding of the significance of defibrillation in resuscitation. Conclusion: Despite a relatively good rate of attendance at recent BLS courses, over a fifth of nurses remain without any BLS training. In addition few nurses have retained the BLS knowledge required for competency. Action is needed to ensure all nurses receive BLS training and practice this skill regularly

    An investigation of Fe XV emission lines in solar flare spectra

    Previously, large discrepancies have been found between theory and observation for Fe XV emission line ratios in solar flare spectra covering the 224-327 A wavelength range, obtained by the Naval Research Laboratory's S082A instrument on board Skylab. These discrepancies have been attributed to either errors in the adopted atomic data or the presence of additional atomic processes not included in the modelling, such as fluorescence. However our analysis of these plus other S082A flare observations (the latter containing Fe XV transitions between 321-482 A), performed using the most recent Fe XV atomic physics calculations in conjunction with a CHIANTI synthetic flare spectrum, indicate that blending of the lines is primarily responsible for the discrepancies. As a result, most Fe XV lines cannot be employed as electron density diagnostics for solar flares, at least at the spectral resolution of S082A and similar instruments (i.e. ~ 0.1 A). An exception is the intensity ratio I(321.8 A)/I(327.0 A), which appears to provide good estimates of the electron density at this spectral resolution.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics, in pres

    Stator setting angle optimization tests were conducted on a two-stage fan to improve efficiency at overspeed, stall margin at design speed, and both efficiency and stall margin at partspeed. The fan has a design pressure ratio of 2.8, a flow rate of 184.2 lb/sec (83.55 kg/sec) and a 1st-stage rotor tip speed of 1450 ft/sec (441.96 in/sec). Performance was obtained at 70,100, and 105 percent of design speed with different combinations of 1st-stage and 2nd-stage stator settings. One combination of settings, other than design, was common to all three speeds. At design speed, a 2.0 percentage point increase in stall margin was obtained at the expense of a 1.3 percentage point efficiency decrease. At 105 percent speed, efficiency was improved by 1.8 percentage points but stall margin decreased 4.7 percentage points. At 70 percent speed, no change in stall margin or operating line efficiency was obtained with stator resets although considerable speed-flow requlation occurred

    Intensity enhancement of O VI ultraviolet emission lines in solar spectra due to opacity

    Opacity is a property of many plasmas, and it is normally expected that if an emission line in a plasma becomes optically thick, its intensity ratio to that of another transition that remains optically thin should decrease. However, radiative transfer calculations undertaken both by ourselves and others predict that under certain conditions the intensity ratio of an optically thick to thin line can show an increase over the optically thin value, indicating an enhancement in the former. These conditions include the geometry of the emitting plasma and its orientation to the observer. A similar effect can take place between lines of differing optical depth. Previous observational studies have focused on stellar point sources, and here we investigate the spatially-resolved solar atmosphere using measurements of the I(1032 A)/I(1038 A) intensity ratio of O VI in several regions obtained with the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) instrument on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SoHO) satellite. We find several I(1032 A)/I(1038 A) ratios observed on the disk to be significantly larger than the optically thin value of 2.0, providing the first detection (to our knowledge) of intensity enhancement in the ratio arising from opacity effects in the solar atmosphere. Agreement between observation and theory is excellent, and confirms that the O VI emission originates from a slab-like geometry in the solar atmosphere, rather than from cylindrical structures.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, ApJ Letters, in pres

    Identifying Trippers and Non-Trippers Based on Knee Kinematics During Obstacle-Free Walking

    Trips are a major cause of falls. Sagittal-plane kinematics affect clearance between the foot and obstacles, however, it is unclear which kinematic measures during obstacle-free walking are associated with avoiding a trip when encountering an obstacle. The purpose of this study was to determine kinematic factors during obstacle-free walking that are related to obstacle avoidance ability. It was expected that successful obstacle avoidance would be associated with greater peak flexion/dorsiflexion and range of motion (ROM), and differences in timing of peak flexion/dorsiflexion during swing of obstacle-free walking for the hip, knee and ankle. Three-dimensional kinematics were recorded as 35 participants (young adults age 18–45 (N = 10), older adults age 65+ without a history of falls (N = 10), older adults age 65+ who had fallen in the last six months (N = 10), and individuals who had experienced a stroke more than six months earlier (N = 5)) walked on a treadmill, under obstacle-free walking conditions with kinematic features calculated for each stride. A separate obstacle avoidance task identified trippers (multiple obstacle contact) and non-trippers. Linear discriminant analysis with sequential feature selection classified trippers and non-trippers based on kinematics during obstacle-free walking. Differences in classification performance and selected features (knee ROM and timing of peak knee flexion during swing) were evaluated between trippers and non-trippers. Non-trippers had greater knee ROM (P = .001). There was no significant difference in classification performance (P = .193). Individuals with reduced knee ROM during obstacle-free walking may have greater difficulty avoiding obstacles
